they can't sell the team for at least 2 years because of the new stadium. if they sell the team they have to pay back whatever the state paid for the stadium.

Jul 16 - Add one more team to the list of clubs interested in Bobby Abreu -- Milwaukee.
The Brewers recently contacted the Phillies to see what it might take to get Abreu, an executive of a club with interest in the right fielder told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. But don't bet your favorite photo of Bernie Brewer on this deal going down.

The Brewers still haven't decided if they?re going to be buyers or sellers. And even if Milwaukee stepped up its pursuit, a baseball man friendly with Abreu says he would be surprised if Abreu waived his no-trade clause to go to the Brewers.

The Yankees and Mets also have both informed the Phillies that they have an interest in making a trade for Bobby Abreu, according to a report in the New York Post.

Abreu is owed about $23.5 million through the 2007 season, which includes a $2 million buyout should his $16 million option for 2008 not be exercised. Abreu also has a no-trade clause and, to waive that, his agent, Peter Greenberg, indicated the option would probably have to be picked up or additional dollars added to the contract.

Citing a National League executive, the newspaper also reported that Phillies GM Pat Gillick will give his team two weeks to get back into the playoff race or else he will more seriously consider making major trades.

they are 4th in the AL in ERA?

RF rbi production is 26th in the league. Granted the yankees have enough power and hit for average type guys, but you need a guy who can get on base. I don't think Abreu will goto NY - either team. All the yanks really have is Hughes and they do not want to move him. Plus - they'll get Burrell before Abreu.

You should see the Phantic when he's drunk. Very entertaining!

Mr. Met, the Mets' cartoon-like mascot, held an on-field press conference today to declare that it is he, not all-star catcher Mike Piazza, who is the gay Met.

Rumors of Piazza's sexual orientation rocked the baseball world last week after NY Post gossip columnist Neil Travis reported "a persistent rumor around town that a certain Met star is gay and considering coming out."

"Look at me for Pete's sake," said the four-fingered mascot. "I prance around the stadium like a fairy in this flamboyant costume. Isn't it obvious who the gay Met is? Mike is a total hunk, but he's definitely a breeder boy."

"I don't think anybody should be surprised," said Mets general manager Steve Phillips. "Baseball is all about statistics, and if the numbers hold up, it would stand to reason that with 26 major league teams, at least one of the mascots would be gay. I think the New York players and fans are a diverse enough group that they can handle a gay mascot."

But not everyone agrees. Boy Scout troupe 743 of Little Neck Queens cancelled their trip to tonight's Dodgers game after learning of the news. "Mr. Met does not espouse the values we want to instill in our young men," said Frank DiMeola, the troupe's leader. "Now I hear that he (Mr. Met) was involved in an illicit relationship with a team bat boy in 1997."

Mr. Met emphatically denied the charge, saying that he's been involved in a long-term monogamous relationship with Pittsburgh's mascot, Pete the Pirate, since 1992. "Even after all these years, every time I see that little butt pirate waving his long sword, I just want to skip around the bases," said Met.

"I choked the chicken," said Mr. Met, about his abusive relationship with the Padre's San Diego Chicken."

Met does admit to being involved in a torrid affair with the San Diego Chicken many years ago. "It was an abusive relationship where I choked the chicken," he said. But I put that cock behind me and have moved on with my life.

"Yes, I spend a lot of time on my knees behind the batter. But that doesn't make me a homo," said Piazza.

Despite Mr. Met's admission that he is the gay Met, some fans refuse to believe that Piazza doesn't play for the other team, too. At the White Swallow Saloon in New York's West Village, Met fan Ben Dover and buddies debated whether Piazza pitches or catches off the field. "He can deny it all he wants," said Dover, "but let's look at his stats: He tints his hair blonde, has a fu man chu like that guy from the Village People, and listens to the Pet Shop Boys. I'm sorry, but three strikes and you're out."

Met's brass said Mr. Met will continue to serve as the Mets mascot, but there were no plans for Shea Stadium's organist to play cabaret tunes between innings.

the starters have been good. but they can't continue to be this good. Mussina's never been this good, and he's just a microcosm of your rotation. They're pitching above their career numbers, which isn't likely to continue. i don't think so, at least.

i actually think if the guy matures he'll be a good #2 for the Phils for a long time.

The problem with the Phils is this. 1-5 are solid usually. They get on base, so you usually have one or two men on with maybe an out. Then the bottom comes up, and they are awful, so they manage to creatively end innings without getting the men in. Liebrathal tried soo hard to hit into a double play and just missed it, accidentally hitting a run in. They still managed to blow 2 on with no outs and bases full with 1 out. Until the Phils can get a solid bottom half that can knock in the top half, the pitcher's great games won't mean a thing unless Howard can knock in all the runs himself before Rowand comes up.

Rowand is the only one from the bottom half who should be around next year, and he should be batting down in the order.

yeah, I know the other two's contracts are up...I just hope they get people who are actually better. Looking at the moves made last off season, I'm skeptical. A-Rod retired, Nunez has been horrible, Manual won't play Delucci, plus he's on the trade block, Rowand isn't hitting well (though I like the guy) while the guy they traded for him is an MVP candidate.

We need a solid hitting 3rd baseman and catcher, our shortstop has to start swinging like a leadoff hitter, we'll need to fill at least one outfield spot, and then we need to overhaul the pitching staff so Cole and Myers are the only two still in that rotation. It's doable, and rumblings are the Phils will be ridiculously active in the off season, but I still worry.

you guys will..the phillies have had good teams but none that win it all obviously..they have had better luck than teams like the devil rays or pirates who just suck year after year
oh, you mean the Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh teams, both of who's cities have had NFL championships over the past 5 years? we've definately had more luck than those guys...

well if ur talking about as far as getting a city championship no philly will struggle..but as far as the phillies being good thats what I meant

the only reason right now that i watch the phillies is to see if chase extends his hit streak, once he gets a hit i turn it off

yup

and the phils lose another series tonight.

it is bad when they have to sell 2 for 1 tickets on seats 30$ or less to a nl east opponent.

heh thats good for people who root come and root against the phillies..dc and baltimore only sell out when they get a philly, boston, or ny team coming it seems like so the orioles and nationals should try this method

the phillies wish they were as big as the yankees, mets, or red sox

of course..but they still get some people to come down I-95 to baltimore or DC when they are there..which is nice. DC gets flooded with people from the eastern seaboard who make the short trek..makes me feel at home when the mets are in :)

espn has "Hamels (PHI) 12K in 5/1/3 IP vs Braves" in their bottom breaking news corner as if he didn't give up 7 runs.

Coverage maybe cause they have 5 states rooting for them. I bet you the Eagles season ticket line is longer than the Pats.

no team in sports history got more coverage then the eagles last year (though most of it was negative)

one of the biggest knocks on philadelphia sports is the fact that they never stop talking about the Eagles. They even talk down here about how much Philly won't stop talking about the Eagles. In April, May, June, no matter what else is going on in sports, the Eagles get more coverage than anything else. I guarantee the Eagles get more coverage regionally than any team nationwide.

you have to be fucking kidding me.

I can't even fault Bell - he slipped. Fucking Phillies pitching staff is pathetic. Just let Ramon Hernandez pitch the rest of the year so we could atleast watch home runs being hit out of the park.

Arthur Rhodes should be buried alive.
