View Full Version : Looking for some perspective

So throughout my entire life I have only been passionate about two things, music and veterinary medicine. When I was younger all I wanted to do was be in a band and tour and make a living off of it, but I grew up and realized that while things don't always work out like that, music production would be a much likelier way for me to make a living working with music. Around that time I started working at an animal hospital and fell in love with the idea of treating animals. I'm getting to the point in my schooling where I need to finally make a decision and stick with it, but I change my mind basically every day. I'm not posting this to be told what to do, but rather to get some fresh perspective on my issue.

Any help is apreeshed.

Go the animal route.

You can still record music in your free time and get some money that way.

go get a nice job. your music sucks and no one wants to hear it or listen to anything you would ever produce. now be good boy and go studyyour welcome.

Vet Med = Stable career and easier to "make it" in if you have the skill. Music industry is always in flux, especially with the advent of newer technologies. Plus as others said, you can always do music on the side.

Vet Med is ovbviously the safer bet
people are saying to do music on the side. I'm not so sure about that. It's hard to keep music as just a little side project. Being involved in music and having a full time job would be damn hard but sure still doable.
Good luck either way :)

Vet Med, only because I wanted to be a pet shop owner when I was younger, and ya know, a vet is pretty much the same thing.

I'm basically seconding what others have said. Definitely try for veterinary science/medicine first. I have no idea how it works in the US, but my sister (perfect straight A/A* student) failed to get in for vet med twice and so now has to do something else, so I would try the vet route first and if you fail, go for music. It would be much, much harder to do it the other way around.

I'm still pursuing my music while paying the bills. There are a lot of us out there. Have faith and think positive and things will turn out ok.

yes, this is what i came in here to say. Getting into vet school is even more competitive than become a doctor that practices on humans because there are so few vet schools. You honestly might need a few backup choices considering becoming a veterinarian is really tough and becoming a musician (that actually makes a living through music) is even tougher. Whatever you do, just make sure you get a well-rounded education that you can use toward other things in life, if neither of those work out. Good luck.

you say your passionate about both, so i suggest doing both. Go and study veterinary medicine as it will lead to a career for you which will enable you to pursue music as well. even if its just as a hobby.

I had the same problem, almost identical to your situation...I was a sophomore in college, and I was quite unsure about whether I should commit myself to academic or musical pursuits. I felt (and still feel) like I needed both music and medicine in my life. In the end I chose to pursue medicine, with the prospect that I can still play/write music whenever I want.

My advice is to do some self-evaluation and think about what is most important to you, and all the possible ways you can integrate music and medicine into your life. If you believe you will not be fulfilled unless you are fully committed to music, and you have the resources to make it possible then you may want to follow that dream and see where it takes you. However, it's very possible to practice veterinary medicine AND make music a substantial part of your life. You may or may not be able to go on tour, but you can definitely still play shows, write, and make records (you'll definitely have the income to support these pursuits ;-) )

I just finished my first semester of college and I went in as a marine biology major. I didn't know what I wanted to do but I wanted to do something with animals. I got through this semester and realized as much as I love animals that music was still my number one passion and I can't picture myself having any other job. Even it ifs something as much as working at a venue or something along those lines. I realized in my first semester that I can picture myself doing anything in the "music" industry. So maybe give vet school a try and if it just doesn't work then go the other route.

finish your education, then take a year out to pursue the music. if it takes off then continue, if not go with the animals.

I've wanted to be a Veterinarian pretty much ever since I knew what it was.But now that I'm older, and know about all the years of schooling and how hard it is to get into a veterinary college and everything, I've been thinking twice.I've thought about maybe being a nutritionist.I too need to make the decision whether to pursue it or not very soon. And I'm torn.Sounds cheesy but you have to follow your heart.Do whatever you think will make you happy.

Have you get started in the music route yet? I don't want to discourage you but it's a tough world out there if you plan to do music. I would vote for the animal route since it seems like you've already getting your feet wet with working at the hospital. You're at school right now so just take the opportunity and study science while if you want to pursue music I don't think staying in school is that necessary.

Go with the money. Music can always be a hobby, not really medicine.
