so heres the situation. ive been playing guitar for six years, but the only reason is because i actually play drums and in all the bands ive been in, they usually leave guitars and amps at my place. now im in a poppunk band where i play guitar and we are starting to get into a lot bigger shows. the thing is i dont own a single electric guitar or amp myself, and i think its time to invest in one, but i have no clue what would be an ideal setup. Guitar is easy, but would would be a good half stack amp and head that i could get, because we plan on setting up a tour soon.

Depends on how much you're planning on paying. I play pop punk, and I use an Orange Rocker 30 and an Avatar 2x12 with a G12H and Vintage 30. As far as cabs go, you get the most for your money out of avatar, so check them out.

If you have a big budget, check out Orange cabs, the Marshall 1960 cabs, or a Mesa Oversized.
And if you have a choice of speakers, V30s and G12Hs are nice. Greenbacks are very nice too.
As far as heads go, it depends on the sound you want.
I love my Rocker 30, but some other good heads are Mesa's Single Rec, Dual Rec, Marshall JCM800, and the Orange Rockerverb 50.
Don't get a JCM900.

All of this is good advice. JCM900s aren't bad, but they do have some more reliability issues than the others listed here. If you have a low budget, then a Peavey 5150 is usually pretty easy to find at a low price.

Agreed, 5150s are definitely a good choice too.

totally disagree with this. the orange rockerverb 50 is absolutely a better head for everything EXCEPT pop-punk actually in my honest opinion. if someone really loves that sharp 80s marshall tone then the only thing better than a 900 is an 800, straight up. i mean, and you can get it easily half the price of anything else you mentioned. whats not to love about a rich, sharp tube head that is purely marshall throughout, that you can buy for 500 bucks?

You're right, an 800 is awesome. But the 900 has this weird hi gain treble thing going on. If you're into the sound then be my guest, but I can't stand the distortion on that thing.

Mesa Boogie Single Rectifier, or believe it or not, a Crate Blue Voodoo (if u can find one)... my guitarist has a Blue Voodoo head and it sounds amazing.

Most of all though is if you can, find a small guitar/amp shop and try out their amps. Sometimes you'll be surprised by the sounds that come from amps not under a distinct and well known company name.

Most JCM900s (all of them except the SL-X) have diode clipping distortion built in.... it's basically like having a distortion pedal in the middle of your amp. Not necessarily bad, but it's got a very distinctive sound to it. If you don't like it, there's nothing you can do to change it without some pretty heavy modification.

i mean yeah, the treble/high-mid section of that amp can be pretty harsh, but i feel like a lot of marshalls are like that. that's part of what makes the sound so sharp and gritty.

Buy it used, and you'll be able to sell it for the same price if you ever want to.

I'd definitely say an orange, but you can get a fantastic Orange, perfect for a tour, without spending ALL your money.

Orange just came out with a Tiny Terror and a Dual Terror.
They have 3 knobs per channel (volume/tone/gain) and only weigh like 15 pounds. Most importantly, they sound AWESOME.
The Dual Terror has 2 footswitchable channels and can play on either 15 or 30 watts, which is PLENTY loud (way louder than the 50 watt marshall head i've got) and you can select whether it outputs with 2 or 4 tubes on the back as well.
The Tiny Terror is just one channel and can switch between 15 and 7 watts, but is also still more than loud enough for sure.
I just bought a Dual Terror and the singer/guitarist in our band got a Tiny Terror and we couldn't be happier.

As far as price goes, the Duals retail for around $820 but I found mine on Ebay for around $700-$750, with free shipping.
I think the Tiny's go for like $600.

Oh and did I mention they have gig bags that make them super easy to carry?
Get one of these and an Avatar 2x12 cab and you will be SET.

and this is exactly why i don't intend to buy a brand new tube amp of any kind

no matter what your budget is, if you can't afford a tube amp, do NOT go for solid state. save up another couple hundred and get a tiny terror.
