View Full Version : Underrated Movies

I hate when there are amazing movies out there, but they're just ignored and eclipsed by a movie that costs millions to make. What are some of the movies out there that you think are underrated?

Personally, I'm a big fan of Rocket Science.

I know this isn't a well made movie or anything, but Saving Silverman has always made me laugh my ass off, no matter how many times I watch it. Jack Black and Steve Zahn should do more movies together.

Nah, it got rave reviews at the Sundance Festival, but not everyone liked it because its quirkiness was "overly done" and it was such a small movie, no one paid any attention to it.

Personally, I thought it was brilliantly done. The style in which is was shot was pretty honest and simple.

THIS.

My favorite movie of all time. SO quotable, and very misunderstood. Some of the shit is way ahead of its time. People just don't get it. C'mon, the guy holding the sign up at the end of the movie ("Will this movie ever fucking end") is just priceless. The fact that a movie can poke fun at itself is quite novel. Ebert and Roeper can go fuck themselves.

But yeah, I disagree with RequiemThe Sandlot was given 2 thumbs up by Siskel and Ebert, arguably two of the most prominent film critics to ever live. So... what the hell are you talking about? I literally don't know a single person who hasn't seen The Sandlot. Just because it wasn't a blockbuster doesn't mean it wasn't a huge film. It goes down in history as one of the best kids movies, if not one of the best baseball movies, for sure. Your argument is absurd.

It still stands at "rotten" on Rotten Tomatoes. Just because Siskel and Ebert like something doesn't mean that the majority of the film world does. And I thought that every person that I knew had seen the Sandlot until I got to college and a lot of kids had not seen it, nor had anyone that they knew. I was shocked, so I wasn't sure if it was just a thing that all my hometown friends had seen.

Maybe it would have been better if I had said The Little Giants, a classic amongst my group of friends that was absolutely panned by critics, including Ebert.
And the Mighty Ducks currently stands at 08% on Rotten Tomatoes and Ebert gave it a bad review. Now that I look at it, so it seems like movies that we all think are classics were torn apart when they first come out...That brings up a weirder question, what are the kids now going to be considering classic kids movies?

Sneakers is a good one. While a fine film, I wouldn't call Dogville underrated except maybe on AbPunk.net

From this year: Adam, the Damned United, Adventureland, World's Greatest Dad, Humpday

Adventureland and World's Greatest Dad all were given pretty great reviews across the board. You are right on about Adam though. Fantastic little movie. I thought Away We Go got shit on a little more than it deserved, personally.

Bottle Rocket is. Everyone I know, that swear they absolutely love his work, has yet to see it.

Such is the case with many great directors. How many people have seen Blood Simple by the Coen Brothers, or Hard Eight by PT ANDERSON? Just because it's an earlier film in these directors careers and was under the radar doesn't mean it was underrated.

Half Nelson

Ryan Gosling was nominated for an Academy Award for his BRILLIANT turn in this movie. I would hardly call it underrated. Check out what Kevin Smith has to say about the movie... Any time someone calls you a "young Brando" or a "young Sean Penn", that is not underrating.

Great reviews, but not many people saw them. A lot of people on this site did see Adventureland, but overall it didn't make much money.

I stand corrected. I ended up seeing it on a whim and honestly didn't realize it was nominated. Good movie though
