View Full Version : Is Your Favorite Sports Team From Your Hometown?

Lately I've noticed most of my friends are fans of sports teams that are not from their hometown. I can't understand why someone would support a team from a city they've never lived in (and in a lot of cases, never even been to). This really irritates me.
My question to you is: Are you a fan of a sports team that isn't your hometown?

my rugby team isnt quite the local team but neighbouring suburb Cronulla
but go for locals in Randwick and The NSW Waratahs
and go go for the Cleveland Cavs, obviously no Sydney in the NBA, and weve been chucked out of the NBL anyway

I live in Virginia. But my family in general is from New England. So I'm a Red Sox/Patriots/Celtics fan, It's in my blood, I guess. Just how I was raised.
I do root for the teams from Baltimore too though...they're about as close as you can get to Virginia

Well, in my area yes. I'm from northern California and I like the Giants, Raiders, Warriors, and Sharks (even though I'm over an hour away from San Jose).
this makes me mad too!! i always see steelers shit, when you know not all of these people are from pittsburgh. annoying!

I've lived near every one of mine at some point or another, except the Browns. (Yankees --> Devils --> Crew/Buckeyes --> RedHawks)
Poll question should be different. The Eagles are my favorite NFL team, but I'm also a huge Texans fan.

Yeah, those are almost always bandwagon fans. I have a bunch of friends that are Vikings/Bears/Packers fans. They were all born and raised in Scottsdale. It pisses me off when they say things like, "We beat the Lions last week." We? You're not from Minnesota/Chicago/Green Bay.

They are essentially the same question. Please tell me that you're not so stupid that you don't understand what I'm asking. If you need me to repeat myself I will, but really? You know what I meant.

Let me go through answering your poll for you:
(11:11 searches through poll forum, spots one with a title he likes) "This one says 'Is Your Favorite Sports Team From Your Hometown?'. Why yes, the Eagles are from my home town!"
(clicks on poll)
(reads new question) "Wait...'Are you a fan of a sports team not from your hometown?'...that's a totally different question! I love the Houston Texans too, they're probably my second favorite team! Which do I choose, yes or no?!"
(angrily clicks yes because the title of the poll was misleading)

Pretty sure you started this "argument" with that comment right there. And I have no idea which you want to know, if my favorite team is from my hometown or if I like a team from somewhere else, because the answer to both is yes, and you asked both questions.

Reading my post should have cleared things up.
I answered the question from the main page so I couldn't read your post, I clicked yes because the Mets are from New York but if I did read your post which asks a different question my answer can change. "Are you a fan of a sports team that isn't your hometown?" is very vague (do you mean a casual fan or my favorite team?) and if you do mean favorite team its the opposite of the first question asked. I like the cardinals, They're not my favorite obviously so in that case my answer is both yes and no. I'm not trying to be a dick but you asked 2 different questions so you don't know which question people are answering so the poll is pointless. If you are really interested in the results you should make a new one with better phrasing because this one isn't answering anything. Also on a lesser note the whole hometown thing isn't 100 percent clear, what if i'm a baseball fan in Virginia or Louisiana or New Mexico. Theres no MLB team in any of those states let alone towns. What if you live in Northern Florida and root for the Braves? or Buffalo and root for the Jets? or what if you live near a teams Minor League affiliate and root for the team because of that.Maybe i'm just nitpicking, but its all plausible.

The first post should have cleared things up. Basically I'm asking if you root for a team that isn't from your hometown. Or the closest city that has a team, I guess. The point of the poll was basically to see how many bandwagon fans there are, rooting for teams that they have no ties to.

i didnt glance back up and check, but after one read through, they seem the same to me.
Anyway, i'm from Toronto so i root for Blue Jays, Raptors and Maple Leafs. If they arent in contention then I root for a team with players i like. For instance, i really used to like Doug Christie and Peja Stoy so i routed for the Kings! I hate shaq so i root for the team he is playing against unless i hate someone else on the opposing team even more...etc

My fav team is the Braves; however, Utah has no baseball team so I'd have to pick a team from a different area. The Jazz are my fav basketball team though.
I'm originally from here, but moved to Denver when I was 5 and the back to here when i was 12. So I'm a broncos/nuggets fan then a bears/bulls fan.

South, I live pretty close to Saguaro High School.
I grew up in northern California, but I was raised as a Chargers fan cause my dad used to live in San Diego. I live down here now though so that's okay.
But I'm also a Phoenix Suns fan because I lovelovelove Steve Nash. (Though, I am a Warriors fan too.)
First off i must agree with the person saying your title question and poll question are not the same.. because for me:
Is Your Favorite Sports Team From Your Hometown? NO.
&
Are you a fan of a sports team that isn't from your hometown? YES.
Growing up in MI and only paying attention to football, i liked the 49ers for Jerry Rice, and the Giants for Lawrence Taylor, but i was just in elementary school then. Went to middle school, got into playing football video games (mostly just college) on Genesis, and usually just chose the teams that looked the coolest, for me it was UAB Blazers. (Univ. Alabama-Birmingham), and I've stuck with them the whole way. But I do research and actually know about the team and keep updated, probably more so than some people that have their homestate team as their favorite.
Plus I find that living in MI I've grown quite a hatred for most MI teams and their fans. =P

I'm a huge Bears fan and Angels fan. A diehard, if you will.
I was born and raised in the Bay Area of California where I have the options of two teams for each respective sport. But growing up, watching the games, I've grown as a fan of those teams and stuck with it.
I can't stand these bandwagon fans though when they reach the playoffs that try to talk stats and teams with you but don't know jack about the team.
I grew up in northern California, but I was raised as a Chargers fan cause my dad used to live in San Diego. I live down here now though so that's okay.

I am not a fan of the professional sports teams from my hometown here in Holland. I do however remain a big Mariners fan dating from the year I spent in Washington State, as well as a Seahawks and Gonzaga supporter. I did root for the Sonics and I must admit I still care about what Oklahoma City does, because they were the Sonics at some point of course. The Colts are my favorite NFL team however and the Cavs my favorite NBA team.

hometown is a little too specific... region would maybe be more suited. I'd be suprised even half the sports fans in US even had a sports team in their hometown.

Connecticut has an AHL team (Hartford Wolfpack) but they feed into the New York Rangers, so my support goes to the Rangers.
And other than that, we don't have much in the way of sports teams. Everyone in CT is generally either a yankees or red sox fan. I happen to be a Red Sox fan because i was converted (don't ask). And I don't particularly follow football, except for the Green Bay Packers, who I've been watching since I was like, 8 at my best friend's house. So yeah.
Carolina Panthers fan. I've seen only one other and I gave him an approving nod. ;-)

to be annoyed by it is to limit the reasoning for being a fan of a certain sports team to that sports team having to be from where you're from. Which is retarded. We don't have any professional teams in my state (SC) but we're about 3 hours from Atlanta so many people are braves fans. That's not why i'm not a fan but it does make me like them less. My favorite sports team period is the yankees, who i've liked since I was like 8 (that would be before 1996). They were my favorite team cause in the past they had the best, and my favorite players. And they were so good. I just liked everything about them even though at the time they weren't the powerhouse they are today. I will always be a yankees fan, and only a yankees fan. And I'm not from New York the city or the state.

I think as long as there is a legit reason to be a fan of a team that is not from your immediate area, its all good. IF you are just a bandwagon fan, NOT ok. They are just the worst.

(he's really old) he raised me to be a steelers fan in western ny. and i've been rocking the black and gold for 15+ years. rod woodson is my all-time favorite steeler. i can still spell fu'amatu-ma'afala from memory. does this make me a bandwagon fan in light of their recent success? am i supposed to dump my favorite team because they're freaking awesome now? plus we're gonna win it again next year. we're the spurs of the nfl. watch chumps.
