But I'm biased because that's my favorite movie ever.

I love Zooey, and (500) Days of Summer, but she played the role of "girl who literally shited on the face of guy," ("What?! Literally? Well no, not literally.") character to well.

who do i wanna bang? = Natalie Portman

Say Anything: A noble underachiever and a beautiful valedictorian fall in love the summer before she goes off to college.
Jerry Maguire: When a sports agent has a moral epiphany and is fired for expressing it, he decides to put his new philosophy to the test as an independent with the only athlete who stays with him.
Vanilla Sky: A successful publisher finds his life taking a turn for the surreal after a car accident with a jaded lover.
(plot summaries taken from IMDb)

those don't sound very appealing either, but look how those turned out. Cameron Crowe is amazing. give Almost Famous a shot.

Haven't seen (500) yet, but I really want to. Out of the others, it was a hard choice. What it came down to was that Winslet is too flaky, and the Portman character's personality and mine would completely clash. Both of them would probably drive me insane having to put up with them. But I think I could deal with Hudson, and something about her in that movie just makes me want to fall in love with a girl like that.

This one was tricky for me.

In terms of the best performance, I'd give that vote to Winslet in ESOTSM. Absolutely brilliant. Kate Hudson was a very close second.

In terms of "want to bang the actresses," I'd go Zooey followed by Kate.

In terms of "want to bang the characters," I'd go Kate, followed by Natalie.

In terms of best movies, I'd go ESOTSM, Almost Famous, 500 Days, and then Garden State.

Tough poll for sure, but I chose Kate Winslet. What an incredible performance.

Wow, freaking difficult/great poll. I'm a gigantic Zooey nerd, but went with Kate Hudson (who is losing horribly) because I think Penny Lane was a more interesting character than Zooey's as Summer. Kate Winslet is amazing in ESotSM, though.

Also... Garden State is an awful movie. Fists up, gentlemen--bring it on.

ugh. zooey is too popular.

penny > clementine > sam >>>>> summer

(but in general, natalie portman > kate winslet (just because i haven't seen her in a lot) > zooey deschanel > kate hudson...)

summer is an emotionless rock. sam is the ideal girlfriend. clem is the ideal girlfriend but with realistic flaws. penny is at once the most ideal and most flawed character of the bunch. as talented as natalie portman and kate winslet are, i don't think either of them could have pulled off penny lane as well as kate hudson did, not to mention almost famous had the best script (huge cameron crowe fan, pardon my bias).

I couldn't pick between Zooey & Natalie, therefore they both are number 1 & 2. And I also can't vote because I'm unable to choose between those two.

1./2. Natalie Portman

I wanted to do this research for the poll to give an informed opinion because a) I saw all the movies before (sans 500 day) & b) I knew I am very biased for Natalie Portman. And it's not even her as an actress, just her as Sam. I know people might think Garden State is overrated and all, but I'd be lying if I didn't say this movie changed me. I used to be a metal kid, saw Garden State, now I listen to singer-songwriter, indie, alternative. So I am very fond of this movie, it means a lot. And I love it so much that I love all the characters, no matter what. I tried to watch the movie and give a fair assessment of Portman, but I couldn't. I just love her and can't see anything wrong with her.

1./2. Zooey Deschanel

I. Fucking. Loved. Her. She was fantastic. Just bubbly, and energetic, and really lovable. There were a few moments where she reminded me of my girl, which made me fall in love with her even more. She definitely is one of my most favorite characters and is definitely giving Natalie Portman a run for her money. I'm not a Smiths fan, but on the elevator I kinda changed Smiths to something I listen to and I started falling for her. What sold me though was when she was singing on stage. I fell dead in love with her after that. I do think though, that I love her so much because I used to enjoy her, and then I saw Winter Passing, and ever since then wanted to give her another chance. So I could slightly be biased.

3. Anne Hathaway (In Rachel Getting Married)

She did a phenomenal job with this role. I mean from seeing her do all the perky Princess Diaries crap, to seeing her do this brooding, fucked-up character, that shows off her skills. She plays so well here. I won't go without my complaints though. There were a few moments in the film where I didn't believe she was that destroyed. Felt kinda forced to me. Plus there was a couple moments where I felt Rosemarie Dewitt, who plays her sister Rachel, outshined her. But she is definitely in my top favorite fucked-up characters. Along with Angelina Jolie in Girl, Interrupted, the only role I will ever give her.

4. Kate Hudson

Her character was mostly forgettable. Not to say she was bad, I mean there's a couple times I liked her, but none off the top of my head. Plus the amount her face was plastered on anything with the words 'Almost' or 'Famous', you would think she would have much more screen time than she did. The reason I put her above Winslet though, she is the only person that could have done that role. My friends & I watched it sober (to start), and smoked and drank during the movie. Afterwards we were trying to figure out who could've had a different actor. We came up with a few but I don't remember any of them. When we got to Hudson's part, we were stumped. Came back to it later and were stumped even longer.

5. Kate Winslet

I loved her in the beginning of the movie (or is it the end?). But once things started up, I couldn't bring myself to enjoy her. I tried, and I really thought she would've stood a renewed chance (after the first time I saw the movie), but she's just not as enjoyable and bubbly throughout the movie like she was when you were first introduced to her.

i have to wholeheartedly disagree with your entire list. it seems we like the characters for opposite reasons. you prefer the most carefree and bubbly ones, while i prefer the ones who are at once bubbly and flawed. summer had nothing wrong with her, which is why i hated her character so much. i love penny lane the most because she was so fragile under that mysterious exterior. i love clementine because she's both lovably sporadic and annoyingly disagreeable. i love sam because...well, i love natalie portman as sam.

one of these is not like the others... kym isn't carefree, mysterious, and the ideal girlfriend. if i knew anyone like her in real life (and wasn't so immediately as attached as, say, a sibling), i'd avoid her as much as possible. yet there's this part of her that's just so lovable. maybe it's because she's so flawed and broken that you care for her so much. she tries to be better, stumbles, and then tries again. she's easily the most polar and most realistic on your list, and anne hathaway did such an extraordinary job playing her. but, as i said before, she doesn't fit in here, even though that role is my favorite on your list.

I didn't think the choices had a theme. I thought you just picked them because they were four actresses in roles they were great in.

I like the carefree ones because that's how I am. I'm really carefree, couldn't give a shit. And I totally understand your perspective. It makes alot of sense. My only disagreement isn't really a disagreement. The reason I think you thought Summer had nothing wrong with her, was because Tom thought she was perfect, so you kinda fell into that kind of thought. That's what I think anyways. I didn't see Penny being that fragile and flawed as you say, and as has been mentioned before. I might have to watch it again to see and make sure.

i need to fight off the Zooey voters...guys, this character was annoying as shit, sure she played it well but its pretty god damn similar to every single role zooey has ever played. It's nothing that incredible and she's clearly not as attractive as Portman, but thats debatable.

And in terms of all-time great youngster female roles...Portmans character in Garden State is a forever staple, legend, as Garden State is on the top 5 most influential movies of the past decade.
