I don't listen to much new music, because I guess I haven't looked hard enough. I've been shown some things by friends, but I rarely like any of it. Bon Iver, Animal Collective. That stuff doesn't really hook me though. I just want to put something else on my table besides the blood brothers and things that are more than 10 years old. Thanks in any case.

Give Passion Pit a try.

It was okay, but it's not quite what I'm looking for. I need something heavy with very interesting guitar parts. Intricate or otherwise. Lots of chord changes are nice. But nothing macho...Hmm, it seems I know exactly what I'm looking for, but not where it's at. Shit...

From your description.. the first band that comes to mind is Tera Melos.. check out their split ep or their selft titled

Other suggestions would be:
1.Maps & Atlases (Trees, swallos, houses)
2.Portugal. the Man (Waiter You Vultures)
3.Rx Bandits (Mandala)
4.This Town Needs Guns (Animals)

Edit: The Fall of Troy has insane guitar work and are very heavy, but they have much more of a hardcore sound, which not everyone likes. If you do decide to check them out... see anything before manipulator

you should check out Flearoy. they're kind of funky/groovin but the musicianship is great.

^^^ he covered it pretty well

I'd add:

Protest the Hero - Fortress
The Sound of Animals Fighting - Tiger and The Duke
Scale The Summit - Carving Desert Canyons
The Number 12 Looks Like You - Mongrel

& if you like Tera Melos, also check out Hella

Yeah, just listen to Spiderland or Slint (10"), both are infinitely better than any of the shit listed in here. Then maybe throw on some Junes of 44 if you like that.

For interesting guitar parts, just listen to Marquee Moon by Television, sure it came out 32 years ago but it's still generally regarded as one of the best guitar albums ever. So good.

I have Marquee Moon (and Adventure), Spiderland, and all the Pixies albums and they're great records I've listened to countless times, but I'm trying to find something more youthful and creative that ISN'T also on my dad's record racks. Not to say I'm looking for anything particularly immature, or melodramatically rebellious...yanno...a good hardcore punk band...creative musicians...every song not in 4/4 time or with only 3 chords...I think I'm making this really hard. I checked out most of the stuff people suggested, and The Fall Of Troy was the closest to what I'm craving in my head.

What I'm thinking is that I'm going to have to settle with my Locust, Blood Brothers, Heatmiser, QOTSA, and Baroness records and just start a band. :) Not the worst conclusion I've come to involving music.

Thank you guys, except the guy/or girl who suggested Animal Collective. I hope that person was just making a joke.
