Thx to my bro Alex from Fight Fair (http://myspace.com/fightfair) for the pics and assorted info- don't miss them on Warped Tour this summer!Back in the mid-90s, we used the term "screamo" to refer to bands like Anasarca, Antioch Arrow (http://www.urbanhonking.com/greatestband/archives/2004/07/im_sorry_but_i.html), Constantine Sankhati, Swing Kids, etc. These bands were into wearing sweaters, tight black pants, and dyed-black bowl haircuts. We often called them "spock rockers" because they looked like Dr. Spock from Star Trek.
After The Locust got popular and dumb kids who didn't come up in the DIY hardcore scene got into screamo, shitty bands like Thursday and My Chemical Romance showed up and ruined it for everybody. I guess that is when ppl started using the term "skramz" as a way of saying "we also scream a lot in our songs, but we do not shop at Hot Topic like the ghey fggts in those bands u like."

1) I'm happy you mentioned that Rentamerica story, one of the better storys coming from that time period/scene. It's a shame their songs on that split with Agnes Moraine's Autobiography were so bad, like honestly some of the worst hit I've ever heard.
2) What's your opinion on Navio Forge? I don't really like this genre that much, but that LP they put out is some of the best stuff from this scene.
3)Are you behind the fake account Alexbigman on VLV? Thanx.

1. Rentamerica were honestly fucking SICKKKKKKK live, like REAL fucking intense and amazing Copout-style hardcore. I only heard them recorded once but FUCK, so good!!! Wish they would have played more.
2. I don't like screamo, but I know a lot of people love Navio Forge so I am sure they are good at what they do
3. LOL I'm sure you know that VLV legend alexbigman is really Alex from Fight Fair

well, I thought it was funny, and I listen to some of these bands. No one points out how ridiculous this kind of stuff can get, and apparently was (I am a bit of a young'un, just narrowly missed the whole spock thing haha).
I've been laughing at the blog for a while now, by the way. Just letting you know :-) Well done.
Alex Bigman is ridiculous, I know he posted on CMHWAK but I just assumed that account on VLV was a fake

Alex Bigman was in the band Seeing Means More, and more recently (and hilariously) in that terrible pop-punk band called Fight Fair. He joking made up the term "Skramz" on the old message board CMHWAK and it stuck

Wish I went to HS at Miramonte High School in Orinda, California (home of Fight Fair, Seeing Means More and Set Your Goals)
Weird, I went to middle school in Orinda (would've gone to Miramonte, but I moved to LA) and I had no idea any of those bands were from there.
lol I'm reading that thread on VLV and it's kind of funny to hear people talking all that Campo v Miramonte shit like it actually matters. That whole area sucked and I was so fucking glad when I got out of there.

I have a "posts in the style of hipster runoff" tag. Blatantly stealing the HRO style is a pretty funny joke IMO and I think Carles would approve.
BTW here is me on HRO:

Why do you think it's pretty funny to rip it off? I'm curious, because to me it just seems like you're not quite in on the joke and generally missing the point of the blog.
I was under the impression that Hipster Runoff's entire schtick was making fun of the confused consumerism and conformity (accidental alliteration!) of the 00s hipster. So by copying it (and appearing on his blog wearing HRO merch) you're basically a self-fulfilling prophecy in that you're everything he's satirizing. Or is that the joke?
Mostly I find his writing style more annoying than anything else, though, so I haven't really read it that closely except for a few of his early posts (when he actually seemed to recommend things while still making fun of them) and some of his more recent infamous ones.
I find the whole phenomenon rather baffling, though, especially when you now have the New York Times and others writing serious articles about him and the blog. I'm never sure what about him I'm supposed to take seriously, if anything at all.

Precisely.
Oh, and the best way I heard someone sum up HRO is "making fun of people who think listening to music is an accomplishment," which PERFECTLY describes 90s emo/hardcore.

The whole thing is just meta-satire to a point that I find rather annoying, but I guess that's just me.
That is a pretty funny description of it (it describes so much of hipper-than-thou culture), but I've always just thought of HRO as making fun of the same people bloggers have been making fun of this entire decade (i.e. themselves), which I'm a little sick of at this point. Can we get a new joke in 2010 already?
My favorite hipster satire is still Tale of Two Cities/Gawker Blue States Lose, though. Worth digging up if you're into hipster jokes. To this day I still think of the MisShapes (does HRO even write about them? Does anyone anymore?) as Princess Coldstare, Leotard Fantastic, and The Other Guy. I even sent in a contribution to that myself, which I guess is my own kind-of-ironic-but-not-really skeleton in the closet.
My intro to Emo/Hardcore/etc. was also being an asshole Skramz fan, though, so I guess the joke's on me?

The whole thing is just so over the top. I know that's part of the joke, but I'd appreciate a little more subtlety. Like I said, at least when it started out it wasn't as outrageous, at this point it's practically unreadable.
P.S. I'm listening to the new Clipse album and one of the dudes just rapped about Raf Simons. This is worse hipster culture appropriation than everything Kanye West has done since like 07.

Haha EXACTLY!!! I'm a big fan of the Hot Rod/Freddy Got Fingered/Strange Wilderness style of "the audience is the butt of the joke" style humor, and I feel like that kind of exhausting meta-satire and post-post irony are pretty much in the same vein. If I can imagine the readers shaking their head and saying to themselves, "Who IS this imbecile?!" then I have done my job.
Having said that and completely given away the joke, I'm sure this thread will have many more replies from butthurt 17 year olds that don't get it.

It's more like irony that's twice as annoying.
Also, re-living the decade in hipsters is kind of fun. (http://gawker.com/150941/blue-states-lose-photo-contest) The Madden bros! They're like the original "emo" (should I have put extra quotations?) douchebags turned hipsters.

It was mostly what my friends at the time were into, and some of those bands were good (Heroin and John Henry West, for example). But my friends, roommates, former girlfriend, etc were all into it so I went to the shows until I got more into Merauder and Internal Bleeding.

Welcome to the west coast
Where we're holding it down
And the girls are looking mint so you should just stick around
If you've had a bad day
Just know the best times are on the way
We just want to have some fun
We're still young and on the run
We just want to have some fun
Come on! Everyone
Lets just kick it in the summer heat
Meet me at the boardwalk in pacific beach
It's kinda hot like 90 degrees
But all i need is a dime,
Best buds, and a BRAIN-FREEZE!
Lets go to the record store and dig through vinyl
I haven't found anything OOP in a while
But you girl,
So can i score your test press?
And I know that you're single,
Cause I saw it on the newsfeed
We just want to have some fun
We're still young and on the run
We just want to have some fun
Come on! Everyone
Just drop the beat, lets get the party started
It's time to hit the dancefloor
I see your moves girl,
Now i'm laying mine you
I can feel your heart is pacing
Don't ever stop, lets keep it going now
We just want to have some fun
We're still young and on the run
We just want to have some fun
Come on! Everyone
