Anyone here studying any kind of film (production, studies, etc.)? I'm looking into going into film production, most likely at BGSU.

I'm majoring in journalism, with a minor in film studies. I don't know exactly what I want to do with it, or rather what I even can do with it, but that's my plan.

Give yourself 5-10 years to break into the film industry. You are going to have to do some bullshit Production Assistant jobs at first, maybe even for free. Hopefully it is worth it in the end. Try to connect with as many people as you possibly can.

Was going to, but with the way the economy is right now, and my reluctance to relocate to LA, most likely not going to happen.
Thinking about adding a telecommunications major.

There's no way you can be speaking from experience. Is that what you've been told or what?

Might have a parent or something in the industry. Generally that's true for every job though, you start smaller off than you want to.
I'm doing media production. a lot of the focus is on film and graphic design. I technically like filming but so far our module on single camera was run by a dickhead. doing multi cam next term...

I almost did a film minor, and my sister's a film production student, she wants to be an editor
I am English at PSU for Screenwriting. It's fun.

I'm applying for a spot in NYU's summer film program for high schoolers. 4 weeks, 6 credits. I probably won't get in because I have zero experience, so I'm looking at camps through UCLA and USC as well.

Yeah, I'm a Film Video and Interactive Media major at Quinnipaic University currently. I don't start the actual film classes until next semester, but I may transfer to Emerson in Boston before that.

That's pretty much how it is. With everything. With screenwriting, it's almost impossible to get somebody to look at a script of yours when you're a n00b. Unless it's a very engaging story and written perfectly, most agencies won't give a fuck. You're pretty much required to live there, until you can get an agent, because if you live long distance and you submit work, it's more likely than not, they won't acknowledge it if it's unknown. That's how it is with films as well. Unless you're working with a group of people you know with school or have known for a while, you will not get a higher up crew position right off the bat. I've been doing volunteer PA jobs for two years now. Unless you've taken training and courses for a specific job, IE: First AD, Gaffer, etc, you can't just jump into a position.

You can start volunteering as a PA at 16? How?

Actually it was more like a year and a half. I had just turned seventeen. But my school made us do an internship for our graduation project, and I chose to do mine with a local film department with college kids. But the guy I was actually interning (the film department head) was working on a couple of his own professional productions so I got to work on those, as well as several student films.

I've taken two Multi-Media classes so far in high school and I'm in Broadcasting right now. I love this kind of stuff, don't know much about jobs/ the industry or anything like that though.

That's awesome. I'll be seventeen by summer, and I was hoping to volunteer as a PA for part of my summer (I live about 90 min from LA with traffic). At least now I know it won't be impossible.

I wish the Multimedia Production class at my school wasn't completely pointless. No broadcast journalism classes either...damn I love living in a podunk town.

Word. I wish you luck, I really do. It's so much fun and it's definitely a great experience. And it looks good for future employment.

I also prefer working on films and stuff like that, but broadcasting is okay.

I'd rather live the rest of my life in a one-room apartment working "shitty" PA jobs on a 2am "morning" show than something that pays well but I hate. You only live once, who gives a damn about making money if you hate it?

well I am teaching this class for people of English as a second language, so mostly slowly for one. I tried to pick out movies that gave a viewpoint of American culture.

Does anybody here actually work on set? I'm an AC doing freelance right now, but I've got an interview with IATSE, which would be incredible if I got in. I've got to work on a few professional sets with IATSE Caught a few lucky breaks. And to the guy who said that you have to work your way up, you're totally right, but it doesn't take 5 years. I only had to volunteer for a few productions before I got noticed.

I'm majoring in Film and TV (technically the program is called Radio/TV/Film). I'm not interested in radio though, I just want to get into the TV/Film business. I'm a sophomore and so far I love my major. I know I won't get a semi decent job for awhile after graduating probably but I don't care. Do what you love. I'm shooting a short film this summer with some friends which I'm really excited about. Also thinking about doing a 3 week short film production class in Australia this summer. I'm minoring in Computer Science.
