Any mandolin players?

I have a crappy one and I have plucked around on it some. Obviously the first thing I learned was Losing My Religion by REM. I would like to be better. Maybe I will go play it a little now.

I'd really like to try and pick this up someday. I've played violin for over 10 years and I read the mandolin uses the same tuning, which is cool. Also I think my violin-playing has made it harder to pick up the guitar since the finger placement is so much wider, so the smaller neck of the mandolin would be cool too I think. What's your instrumental background? If you can offer comparisons to the violin that would be awesome.

im no mandolin expert but the two that i played had the strings wired backward from guitar i think, high to low as opposed to low to high.

Wanted to bump this thread up, mandolins don't get enough attention. I just got one on Valentine's Day. We made sweet, sweet love all night. Seriously though, happiest little instrument on the face of the earth, I'm entirely in love with it.

Im not a great mandolin player, but I certainly enjoy it. Strings hurt my fingers more so than guitar, but you learn to deal with it
