View Full Version : Gym advice

introduction

Okay guys, so I signed up for the gym yesterday, and I'm planning to go for the first time today. However, my orientation isn't until next week. So. I'm still paying for this week though, and I don't want to waste it. So help me out; I have no idea what sort of exercises I should be doing, and I might just end up on a treadmill for an hour unless someone gives me some advice on exercises! Btw, I don't plan to do any weights, coz my parents won't let me. So help please?

Why don't you see if the place you are going to has a thing where someone that works there can show you around? I would *think* it would come with a basic package...or at least someone would be decent enough to show you around. I don't know if that is covered in orientation, it might, but you could always just double check.
Do you have a friend that goes to the gym? Maybe you could buddy up with him/her and go to the gym together and see what they do and maybe they could give you advice or show you the ropes.

When I started going to the gym no one ever told me what to do and I never had an orientation. If you can't lift any weights then I would say the only thing you really can do is the treadmill, bike and eliptical and it's not hard to figure out what exercises you should do. Just test out what your fitness level is and then go from there.

i guess it depends on what their definition of "doing weights" is? Are they simply referring to actually using weights? Or do they also not allow you to do body-weight resistance exercises than can often times be even better than using actual "weights"? (ie pushups, pullups, core exercises, box jumps etc.)

Definitely start with the Eliptical for like 20 minutes , then 20 minutes on a stationary bike ...... as for not using weights, i'd try doing basic pull ups, push ups, jumping jacks... mabey try some pulley machines with lite resistance just to tone up.....also, EAT RIGHT... that's the key... the eliptical is great but can be a bit tedious, so bring an i-pod and see if you can stay on for the entire length of an album..:) Have fun!!!

Dude weights need to be a part of your workout. They don't need to be super heavy, stay in the 5-10kg area but don't neglect them they will really make a massive difference to both your body and your fitness. It would be stupid for me to try and recommend particular exercises for you but http://www.menshealth.co.uk/ have some totally awesome exercises that you should give a shot.

Remember to vary your workout, you don't want to get bored and give up. Do plenty of stretches before and after your workout to warm up and cool down respectively. The most important part however is getting a good diet started. Loads of protein is a good start man, build up some fat that you can turn into muscle. Chicken, eggs, all that stuff is your best bet for starting off. And some supplements never hurt anyone, just light ones like whey protein and creatine are a good starting point.

Just remember not to neglect individual body parts, focus on particular areas each day and don't overdo it. Keep in your limits but try to reach your max each day and try to beat it next time you work on that area. Just don't say "im not doing weights" because its a massively important part in both staying fit and building muscle.

Hope this helps man.

You should do weights regardless of what your parents think. The more muscle you have, the more calories and fat you'll be able to burn off so definitely try to incorporate that into your workout.

i don't recommend creatine, especially if he is not going to be doing a lot of real lifting. its worthless anyways, especially if you are approaching working out from a health perspective and not just a "I want to look ripped" perspective.

thats dumb even i lift weights at the gym.

If you guys have 'arc trainer' machines, you should use one for your cardio. I love it, it is so much more of a workout than an eliptical or treadmill

I don't understand why you can't use weights, but if your worried about free weights, start off with machines, read the sticker on the machines that tell you the proper way to use that specific machine, then watch other people and take notes of what to do and what not to do with free weights, or buddy up with someone, they'll show you the ropes, and for the love of god, when you do try to bench press, ask someone to spot you, even if its light weight, I hate seeing kids get pinned down because they gassed out and couldn't lift the weight, and guys at the gym are always cool about spotting, just talk to be people, be friendly, absorb knowledge

Depends? You want to work on cardio? muscle? flexibility? you have to decide that first before you get a routine

Congratulations on joining a gym. I joined a gym back in August and have stayed dedicated throughout. It is by far the best decision I have ever made in my life, I'm sure you will agree once you get started. I've gained about 10 pounds of muscle and I started out being straight skin and bones, but now I feel great.

If you are trying to lose weight then I'd suggest to hit the treadmill for a while, do some weights and then go back on the treadmill. You need to lift weights along with cardio to lost the most weight. If you are trying to build muscle but don't know what workouts to do just show up at the gym and do something simple i.e. arm curls. Keep an eye on the other people in the gym and see what they do. You can find out about a ton of different routines by just watching the people around you. Make sure you stay dedicated and eat your protein! Good luck!

actually, most people do need help at the gym when starting out. A lot of people end up doing exercises wrong (especially with weights) that lead to both minor and major injuries or problems farther down the road or are simply wasting their time. For people who are inexperienced it is definitely a wise thing to seek help when you are starting out.

Your options sound pretty limited there. If you do end up just staying on the treadmill mess with the incline or something
