With the announcement of Nexus One (http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/04/nexus-one-review/) today at CES (http://www.engadget.com/ces), thought it was worth having a Google thread. All things google.
in entertainment?
either way, i'm wanting to get the motorola droid. if only verizon would lower their online plans.

The WYSIQYG editor on AP doesn't work. It's got a few under the hood things that bug me. But it's a clean, efficient browser. Good UI design.
chrome is a very good browser, and i'm sure it will only get better. it's probably the fastest browser out there, but FF just has the best addons/features/etc...
i'd recommend trying it at least.

IE is such a horrendous browser. I mean, IE8 is a vast improvement over IE7 (feels archaic if you go back to it today), but it has nothing on FF3.5 and Chrome. I mostly use FF but if I have to use another browser, it's always Chrome. Chrome is definitely faster, but Firefox has better usability.

Seems like a good form factor phone, with a good OS. However, until Android does a few more things - I don't see it as being the reason to make any switch. (I'm a blackberry user.) It needs to set itself apart with their OS, and they haven't yet. I'm keeping an eye on what they do ... and the new 1ghz Snapdragon under the hood has me thinking about what they COULD do in the future. But until then ... no reason for me to pony up any $$ for a switch.

Seriously. I wish it would go away and I could just design for the other 2. It drives me absolutely crazy. 7 is so bad it's not even funny. Which is why I get annoyed when I see any %% of our users viewing our site in it. It looks like shit. I don't know how they browse the web on that. Especially when something soooooo much better is available. For free. Just download it.
Of course I don't get people with super low resolutions either. Heh.
I agree with the speed/usability statements. I love how customized I have FF to do just what I want. I'm not big on the blue hue Chrome has -- but love how much screen real estate it gives.

Developing for the web is getting exciting, but frustrating. IE is extremely frustrating. I'd say we spend 20% of development time at our company to cater to Internet Explorer. When Microsoft released Internet Explorer 7, they pushed it out as a recommended security update. That alone tells us how eager they were to get Internet Explorer 6 off the market...and now with IE8, it two levels of Hell.
But, I'm definitely sticking with Chrome. Google is great with UI. They learned a long time ago that less is more.

Those numbers are like the "10 people die from AIDS every second" -- they really don't mean that much without looking at the internals. And I have no idea why people would pay to download random things. I would never pay for an application the web can do for free. What are you buying that you need?

As we've seen with more "app like stores" (using Facebook as a reference) -- the top 100 or so apps do REALLY well, the rest don't do shit. So, I don't think the apps mean much (as most smart developers will port them to all phones anyway).

Of course it's like that because gizmodo just did some simple math. I also don't pay for a majority of the apps. A lot are free on the app store, which of course doesn't always generate revenue, but I've bought things like FIFA 10, Crash Kart, Tweetie (twitter client), and a few other games. I'd probably buy more if I wasn't a poor college student. The good thing is most apps are cheap (<$10).

I def agree with you there, I always check the top 25 on the app store to see what's being downloaded and maybe make an impulse buy. Other than that i'll only search if I'm looking for something specific that I might have seen on a blog or an ad or something. But I still think apps are important. Those numbers are like the "10 people die from AIDS every second" -- they really don't mean that much without looking at the internals. And I have no idea why people would pay to download random things. I would never pay for an application the web can do for free. What are you buying that you need?

I thought of a good iPhone app once. It's called Click'd. It's just a button on a screen that you keep pressing and there's leaderboards for most clicks overall/per hour/total in an hour/etc. It'd be $1 and a ton of people would buy it I bet.

What an exciting time for technology. First the nexus one is finally revealed today and it sure is sexy (and coming to verizon soon too!); easily the best android device out there to compete (or not) with the iphone. CES is this weekend with many more treats and then Apple's big event at the end of the month where they'll release details about their tablet.
Unfortunately I am one of those viewing the site with IE. This is definitely not by choice. My computer at work does not allow any programs to be installed so I am stuck with it.

Yeah, T-Mobile is the absolute WORST when it comes to upgrading your phone when you're not due for an upgrade. New customers get it for what, $180? And, me, as a loyal, bill-paying customer, get locked into 2 more years on a contract for a phone that is given to new customers for half as much as I paid? My Sidekick broke, and to get the new one, it'd have been I think $350ish, and I get Sidekick data for $20 since I signed a contract when it was still $20, and they were going to raise it to $30 since I'd be entering a new contract. Fuck that, I went on craigslist and found another LX for $60.

It just seemed like BB began to saturate the market with the Curve, since it, IMO, is their best device to date, and they took that knowledge and ran with it, putting the same hardware/software into new BB's with a different, but yet so similar casing (adding chrome to the edges does not make me want to spend $350 on a new phone).
I like my LX a lot, but like you said, the email is pretty bad. The mail forwarding is heavily delated. I wish Sidekicks had apps that could be downloaded other than the ones on the download center.

Yep. Exactly. Bad business move (IMO). The iphone is an iphone is an iphone. Sell a great product - and then give people ways to make it better (memory, custom addons, plans, etc.) -- instead of making 6 versions of a phone, and then trying to make people pick what they want.
I could maybe see having the Curve and the touch screen one. Beyond that? Bad move.

What especially pisses me off is their warranty coverage. It basically only covers software malfunctions, and costs, like, $15 a month or something. It's a shame that it even GETS to the point where we need to upgrade phones because they don't last the full two years.
I'm in the same boat, never missed any payments, and still can't get the fringe benefits of new customers. Reminds me of colleges that give the nice dorms to incoming freshmen, and sophomores get to live in the rooms with cockroaches.
Do phones lose efficiency in terms of processing? I would guess that they would just not operate as quickly as they once did, like computers, but I feel like computers have a lot more justification to operate slowly, since there are far more processes going through it.

Yeah, I never understood with BB didn't run with the original Curve. I'd say about 35% of the kids where I go to college have a Curve. They should have really improvised off of the original Curve rather than shitting out new phones left and right.
They should have done what Verizon did with the enV. The enV was a HUGE phone, and Verizon took note, and made the enV3, as well as an enV Touch, for people like me and you that like physical keyboards, and for people jumping on the touch screen bandwagon. BB should have done the same, i.e. a Curve Touch or just released the Storm, and like you said, provide ways to make each better.
The LX screen is great, really big, which is nice. The keyboard is great, and I feel like the reception/service is great. I also love the blue lights that blink when the phone rings (immature of me, I know, but I'm a sucker for stuff like that.) Wish it could play YouTube, but then again, that's probably just bad for me because I'd never have battery. I was disappointed that the new Sidekick is very similar to the LX, I was hoping, like you said, they'd have changed up the software a bit, especially to compete with other smart phones.

Yep. Absolutely. Then every 2 years (or whatever), you release an upgrade in hardware. Phase out the old one - like iPods/phones. 1st gen, 2nd gen, etc. And you open up the app store 2 years ago instead of recently. They dropped the ball there.

Going to the store is pretty much the worst decision I ever made. Somehow, I was removed as a partial account holder, and when I called customer support and gave my SS#, they said they needed my sister's, because she was the only account holder. So, I get a hold of my sister hours later, call back, and they said "We're sorry, we actually needed Christopher's, your father." Yeah, thanks for the wild goose chase just to get my myFaves refreshed. Yeah, T-Mobile is infamous for NEVER fixing a phone, just offering new purchases.
They know the good customers are locked into contracts and will continue to be good customers, so they figure nice guys finish last, and they go out and rope new customers into their service, but they end up being just like you and me: screwed.
I know Verizon does mandatory OS updates on all of the BB's, at least my girlfriend's did. Be careful though, the update shut her internet off for two weeks for some reason, because the internet did not match the rest of the update or something.

We've had similar stories it seems. Growl.
Interesting. Will check it out. And keep chilling until something gets released that sticks my fancy.

Yeah Sidekick's are so limited as far as customization. Especially the ringtones that are locked into only Download Center capable ones. Can't get 3rd party ringtones, even if you pay for them.
That remains one of the worst decisions the company ever made. The ringtone thing. Being able to change my ringtones on my BB for the first time made me so happy.

Similar stories for sure. I'd like to send some T-Mobile exec's over this way to show how inefficient their help services are.

Yeah, the ringtones absolutely suck. It's all "party pop," early 2000's bands such as Creed, and rap. They're so awful I've stuck to the T-Mobile jingle to remind me each and every time my phone rings how much I hate the customer care.

Monopoly laws that the government will more than likely Google to find out how to downsize Google, haha.

They keep touting their customer service in commercials.

It's ok though, everyone's missing the point because Catherine Zeta-Jones steals the thunder. They see/hear her and totally ignore what T-Mobile has to say about anything. All the viewers/listeners hear is, "Isn't it time you got an upgrade?"

Hahahaha for sure. Nice of T-Mobile to stay out of the crossfire between AT&T and Verizon, almost as if they were looking out for Zeta by being inferior.

I don't hate it. I just think their little advertisement war with Verizon is very immature. Even though Verizon did start it by showing AT&T has no coverage in Montana, North/South Dakota, amongst other states/major cities. But that's petty of me to say "They started it," too.

Chrome ruined my Firefox without me knowing it.
Holy shit! Me too. I though my computer was just weirding out or something.
IE also attacked my Firefox.

As Jason said, the UI design on FF is really good to me, and it's just what I need for that. Chrome is just too simple (it seems?) and I don't like the placement of things. I think a combination of the good things from Chrome and the good things from FF (mostly UI stuff) would make a really great browser. I was reading about the future of Firefox, and I think that's where they're heading with it, too.

Oh, I don't think anybody's disputing the idiocy of this campaign war. But I've used AT&T all my life, and my parents long before that, and I've always been quite pleased with everything.

I had AT&T, Cingular, and when it reverted back to AT&T and never had any complaints. Only reason I switched to T-Mobile is because my sister and I really wanted Sidekicks, haha.

The design mock-ups for the next version of Firefox are looking more like Chrome.

Unless Microsoft dramatically changes something (and by something I mean everything), it will be losing for quite some time.

Chrome needs to figure out their extension integration better, it's quite annoying to not be able to use extensions in Incognito.

Android Froyo can bring your entire home music library to your phone as a stream. So yes, all of your iTunes songs can be streamed onto your Android phone, so long as you have an Internet connection.
That's awesome.

No one talking about google I/O?
I think that they do a great job of building hype for a week ... but last year we saw they didn't sustain it. Maybe it'll be different with all the stuff they announced this year?

Didn't know there was a thread about Google. I just read this book and did a paper on it, pretty interesting stuff.
