RISE AGAINST – The Sufferer & The Witness

Rise Against has been a staple in the punk community since their Fat Wreck debut, The Unraveling, released in 2001. Since then, they’ve become Warped Tour heavyweights, signed to a major label, and have clawed their way into the hearts of many. Now, with the release of their fourth studio album (and the second off of Geffen), The Sufferer & The Witness, Rise Against (vocalist Tim McIlrath, bassist Joe Principe, guitarist Chris Chasse, and drummer Brandon Barnes) touches back on their roots while still progressing forward. Produced by their old friend, Bill Stevenson, Sufferer offers 13 tracks of some of the best songs Rise Against have ever written, as well as throwing us a few curveballs.

“Chamber The Cartridge” kicks off the album with a marching drum beat and a menacing riff that rips into a blistering punk rock anthem. This opener is the perfect blend of raw and melody, as this song shows that RA is not holding anything back. “Injection” begins with a forcing riff that leads into McIlrath’s rough vocals. The first single, “Ready To Fall” is an emphatic track that is carried by Principe’s driving bass and McIlrath’s shredding vocals in the powerful chorus. “Bricks” is a vintage fast pace Rise Against song that clocks in at just over a minute and half long. “Under The Knife” begins with Chasse’s hard-hitting guitar tone and the chorus flows cleanly between the slower verses. “Prayer Of The Refugee” begins by building up the verses slowly, only to kick you in the gut with the bombastic chorus. “Drones” is a soaring fist-pumper that’ll sure get the circle pit going at the next Rise Against show. We get our first changeup from the band with the At The Drive-In inspired spoken word rant known as “The Approaching Curve.” McIlrath speaks his poetry over a driving riff and thumping drums, which lead into the rising and commanding chorus. “Worth Dying For” is a track that incorporates the past with the present, as the verses are fast and in your face, while the chorus is a display of the mainstream scene Rise Against has come into. They balance these two factors very well throughout the track. “Behind Closed Doors” is another edgy track that beats you up, while “Roadside” is this albums “Swing Life Away,” minus the sappiness. Darker and more haunting, “Roadside” is another risky track coming from Rise Against, but their execution on the track is done very well. The pace picks up again with “The Good Left Undone,” an energetic track that’ll burn through your ear canal. The album closes with “Survive,” which begins with a moody guitar riff and crashing cymbals. Then Rise Against changes lanes and turn up the tempo with a scorching guitar riff and a rhythm section driving at break neck speed. The chorus is huge, McIlrath’s vocals dominate, and Rise Against shuts the door vigorously on Sufferer, leaving you to you catch your breath from this stunning album.

Rise Against broke into the mainstream with the success of Siren Song Of The Counter Culture, and with The Sufferer & The Witness, they have perfected their sound, making an album full of songs that can make them huge without compromising their beliefs and music. With their feet still firmly planted in the roots of punk, Rise Against continue to make music that appeals to both the underground and mainstream crowds. This Independence Day, go out and purchase this fine album, as The Sufferer & The Witness is sure to impress and be a staple on many “best of” lists.

Rise Against's sound has greatly improved but I can't say it is "perfected". They're close.

i usually think you guys rate albums too high score-wise...this one got a good 86%, but i think this time it deserves even more. i just drove around pumping this after buying it. it is nothing short of amazing. could be my favorite of the year.

It's an ok album, but it's far, far, worse than RPM and Siren Song. It gets old really fast and lacks a real edge to it that made RA so good in the first place. Plus, "Roadside" is one of the worst songs I've ever heard by them, I cannot STAND that song, especially compared to how good the last album's slow song was. Siren Song was my favorite record of 04 but this likely won't even crack the top 20.

I really love this cd right now but like you said it's not as good as Siren Song. I'm wondering how it's gonna sit with me after 10-15 listens. Anyways it still rocks right now.... nice summer tunes. I'll see where it sits at the end of the year.

Siren Song is the worst album Rise Against has put out.

They had a perfect sound on the The Unraveling. And they've lost it completely.

It's a shame to see one of my favorite hometown bands go to shit.

i'm going to go listen to "reception fades" on repeat now

I agree completely. I find it baffling that everybody here seems to worship Siren Song as their greatest cd, when it was a huge departure from what made them amazing. At least the horrible backing vocals from Siren Song is gone, but it's still nowhere near The Unraveling

Rise Against CD's in order of quality: The Unraveling > Revolutions Per Minute > Sufferer and the Witness >>>> Siren Song

God, yes. Their B-sides are some of their best material. I bought that comp specifically for that song. "Generation Lost" off one of the Fat-Wreck comps was incredible as well.

Rise Against are too fucking amazing for words. Every time I think they're going to sell out and make a crappy record, they blow me away and crush my expectations. TSATW...best punk record this year so far.

I really need to go and get this CD... I just saw Rise Against at Warped in Tinley Park in Chicago. They were easily the best band there, they totally tore up the scene! I've only been a Rise Against fan for about a year, but I love them to death. I sampled this album on the way up from a friend, and it seemed like it could cut diamonds. I'm gonna go get it! Can't wait...

Incredible CD, considering I disliked them pretty much every album before this. Admittedly, Unraveling was lyrically an amazing album, I just couldn't fall into the feeling of it as much as this one. Injection is definitely the high-roller, IMO.

Best new album of 2007 if you ask me. They kept the rise against sound while still bringing something that the radios could play. Every word in every song touches me and i feel their words and metaphores. I cant wait till they come back again although i just saw them last weekend at the Warfield. What a fucking show

Great review.

I admit I don't know much about their old stuff (I bought TSATW after hearing 'Ready To Fall' and 'Prayer of the Refugee,' so I don't know how it compares to their other albums, but I love it. I think I listened to it ten times after I bought it. It is really amazing.

Released in '06 bra, not '07! And "metaphors". I think I should check this badboy out to be honest.

Really nice work by Rise Against.

Although many fans dislike "Roadside" i could listen to that song for an hour before getting done with it.

i hate it when people claim that bands CANNOT top their debut albums or their so-called best albums.
They create the music. They don't change to meet your standards. They write about what they feel at that moment they were writing the album.

If you whine about their older records being better then go ahead, listen to their old records. I mean, why do people even expect them to create another The Unraveling? It's pointless. Rise Against definitely didn't become a shitty band.

*changes the topic faster than you can say oh shi-*

This is probably one of the greatest albums ever. It did take me a while to get into the songs and the meanings, but once it happened everything fell into place and made sense. Injection is a grand masterpiece and as are there other tracks. Great review
