I'm really surprised we don't have a forum for this, but to further cement my reputation as the most pretentious person on these boards, I bring to you the jazz forum.
let's talk about jazz. I've been listening to a lot of Ornette Coleman recently. He was pretty sweet.
I've started up a few jazz threads a while ago so really you are not that pretentious.
Thelonious Monk is what I've been jamming too lately, that guy was a monster on the piano.
ya thelonious monk is pretty awesome.

Thelonious Monk Quartet & John Coltrane = sex. I was talking to someone about that album a week ago and how fucking sweet it is to have those two performing together.

I haven't listened to any thelonius monk outside of a jazz appreciation class I took once, but that class really sucked because my teacher was an asshole who thought all jazz after cool sucked, put subjective questions like "who's the best soloist A)miles davis b) louis armstrong etc," and once said he was literally better than us because he knew more about jazz than us.
he had an ego because he got to play with the duke ellington orchestra once. which yeah, that's really awesome, but we didn't need to hear the story every single day. almost everyone I know that hates jazz only hates it because they class totally sucked.

it was really fucking lame. I got an A because I could read the guy but most people I know failed it.
It sucked because we spent FOREVER talking about the really really early stuff (pre-Armstrong) and then functionally skipped everything after the 70s, except we talked about the mahavishnu orchestra (who rule).
He did play some avant-garde stuff one day and got pissed off when I said it was my favorite thing he played all year.
but anyway, I see thelonious monk cds used/on sale all the time at the local music store, so after I get my job, I'll probably pick one up.
