One of my very good friends cuts and it bothers me a lot. Is there any way to convince him that high school, especially this final year, is very important to his future and that he should start coming to class more often?

Your friend needs some psychiatric help. I had a friend who cut himself and consequently his actions put him in the hospital for a month.

This kind of shit makes me wish I was in school again. The closest I've got to a senior skip story is my mom's senior skip day story.

I've had to deal with this before, and there's going to be no convincing the person. You need to get them help, talk to his parents or something. That's legit pretty much the only way they'll stop, by getting help. And even if he hates you now, he'll thank you in the long run and you will have quite possibly saved his life.

Oh man, this is partially funny and partially not because self-injury is so serious.
I cut class all the time, missed 30 days in my Senior year, and 90 days in grade 11! Whoops! I'm in grad school right now though so it obviously didn't hurt me. Not that you should cut class....... oh dear.

Wow seriously why don't you just go donate some money to tw-aloha or whatever it is.

And then I saw that you were female and 25 and I was like "damn, called it."

So I put this in an old cutting thread and didn't realize that it was indeed very old, and ironicly enough a new cutting thread pops up. Haha.
Considering that self-injury is an incredibly addictive behavior, it is highly unlikely that your friend will find an outlit that hushes the demons exactly like cutting, or one that even comes close. I am sure you know the science behind the pain, but just incase you do not, I shall inform you now. (:
When a person self-injures-in the form of cutting, burning or anything else for that matter-, endorphins are produced and let out all throughout the body. And endorphins are what makes a person giddy, happy etc.. Some other things that let out endorphin rushes are chocolate, exercise, love and so on and so forth. The high that surges in your body only lasts 30mins to an hour at max. And the problem is, your body gets use to the sudden rush and becomes dependent on them so, and the endorphins at the lowest level seem to evaporate. Causing you to cut deeper and more often. Cutting is not something that anyone deserves to be stuck with and is not something to get into. It is a trap, you will suffer, and maybe never get out.
I have been cutting for six years, and the longest I have gone without doing the vile deed is five weeks. Nothing really helps one to stop, they must come to the choice on their own and decide to work to get better. It is a long and exhausting journey I must say, the only thing I can advise you is snapping rubberbands. This is the only thing that can even come close a smidge to the feel good of cutting. Other than that, just be there for them, and we are all here to help you if you need anymore of it. (:
Stay safe, and good luck dear.
Hope this helped some, if not, then to just help understand it.
