Anyway to say something about the band, location is by far my favourite song, but every single song on this album is a catchy hit (well, maybe excluding the instrumental)

On the fence about this band. I've spun the record and a friend is trying to get me to catch their show at Mercury Lounge, but I'm still looking for that something that sets them apart from the pack. How is the live show?

Weathervanes was a cute little album. It's a nice one to have on when you're just hanging out at home, especially when cooped up in this weather.

It's definitely a cute album, but it's sort of reminiscent of that Owl City song. I probably wouldn't have listened to Weathervanes more than a few times if it wasn't for the fact that the lyrics are more creative, they can play a mean glockenspiel, and they're going to perform at Harvest of Hope next month.

My friend just recommended this band to me. Sounds to me like Anathallo + Ben Gibbard babies. The friend that recommended them is an Anathallo fan boy, so this isn't surprising. They don't do much for me, but I don't hate them. They're pleasant enough, I suppose.

I'm a fan. The instrumentals are nice, and the dude's a catchy singer.
Of course, I'm also a little biased, since the singer is from Delaware.

Just found out about this band yesterday, the CD is incredible. I agree the instrumentals are nice, and I'd also add that it just adds to the vibe of the record in general anyway. I'm glad I didn't miss out on this band.

I think they fit well with the overall vibe of the record. Like "Broken Horse" it's got a heavy Sufjan vibe, and the lyrics kind of remind me of Sufjan as well. I could see people ragging on Hannah, but they fit so well. I think if they were really obvious lyrics they wouldn't be as good.

They seem all cutesy and cheesy but like you said I just kind of look past it and apply it what is going on in my life right now. I love that you compared them to Sufjan. I'm definitely using that the next time the dudes at my work start ragging on them

Yeah definitely. I think it's definitely one of the reasons I like them as much as I do, they sound like they went to the Sufjan School for Music and graduated Magna Cum Laude. They've obviously got their own vibe and much less instrumentation, but they could easily tour together (holy fuck I'd love that show), and about the dudes at your job... people make fun of what they don't understand.

If they played together on a tour I would be so stoked. Especially if Freelance just played their record start to finish, and Sufjan had an uber long set as well. And the guys at work love Tom Waits and thats about it. So I had no chance when I played this for them. People only want to compare them to Postal Service/Owl City but there is so obviously so much more there

That would be a great show! Damn, if it happens I'd definitely travel to more than one show that's for sure. Tom Waits is great, but there's obviously more than just one guy making great music, some people are stuck on one thing though, I know the only person I know that would like Freelance is my girlfriend (and she does), all of my friends are pretty much metal heads. I didn't think for one second Postal Service or Owl City. Weird how people are quick to group bands together based on 30 seconds of a song.

They are definitely a band chicks will dig, as every girl I have suggested them too have loved it. The vocals and lyrics drew immediate comparisons to those two. Kinda pissed me off

Definitely upsets me about the comparisons due to lyrics... how ridiculous. There's plenty of bands and entire genres that write essentially the same lyrics and they get the overall "whatever" about lyrics, but then you have clever lyricists like Freelance, Young from Owl City, and Gibbard and people are up in arms, because it's never Lacey/Bemis clever. I don't get it. They're all different, and the vocals are easily discernable for all three of those singers. If you mix up Ben Gibbard with Adam Young you're quite ignorant. The singer of Freelance sounds nothing like either one of them either.

Retarded people will forever be retarded. But first off, fuck Bemis haha I think he is a terrible lyricist and it's about time that dude grew up. I think Adam, Ben, and the guy from Freelance all write great lyrics for their projects. They don't take it too serious and have clever rhyme schemes and such. Nothing wrong with some feel good pop songs. The guy in Freelance I think takes the cake because he transcends fun to make something relate able.

Definitely agree with the bolded sentence. I love pop music so of course I'm always into whoever can make it their own, and the guy from Freelance is great at doing this. For a band that's got a similar vibe as Sufjan and get's compared to Owl City and Postal Service I think he does a great job not sounding like a rip off. They have the potential to be one of the bigger bands in the genre. Instead people will eventually be saying how bands are ripping off Freelance. They're different enough to get through this inital hate storm that veterans tend to brew up because they think only one band can exist in each genre.

Much love to their record label, but I hope they get upstreamed. Look what happened to Owl City when Universal snatched him up. Same thing could happen for these guys if some business is done right. They'd totally deserve it and it would work. They don't sound like a rip-off at all to me so ig et what you are saying. Big things are expected. Big things

Definitely. I don't think Owl City was signed before Universal signed him, but I could be wrong. I'd been listening to him for a couple years before he got really popular. Anyway, I hope Freelance gets noticed big time. I think the name throws people off a bit, but if they just played them on the radio I'm sure people would be all over them. I love the opening line of the CD too. "We get up early just to start cranking the generator." The melody of the song is fucking fantastic... yes, I'm listening to it again.

He wasn't signed. I was one, like you, bumping his first two releases for awhile, when the Universal signing came from way out of left field. Did, and is doing, great things for him now. People would be all over Freelance if any of the songs got some radio play. That opening song is magical. Just the way the music opens up and leads to that line is incredible to me. I love it so much

The entire album is sick... Id have to say my favorites are "Hannah", "Starring", and "Great Estates" but i cant say i dislike any of the other songs they are all close seconds. Designer Skyline is such a good song from his first EP, have you heard any of his Port Blue stuff? It's his ambient side project. I heard about them because my friend was listening to the radio and they were talking about the album and playing it quite a bit, so hopefully that trend picks up and tons of radio stations play them.

Yeah they were pretty amazing times, too much for me at times though in the 28-30 degrees in the early ass hours of the morning. Other than that it was so nice to have some time away from the blistering heat. My brother used to live in Ft. Lauderdale for a couple years (he's in Texas now), but I'd visit him sometimes, that is one giant fucking mall you guys have. I forgot exactly where it's at though.

haha, I was in there once when I was visiting my brother and I saw this jacket I wanted to buy, and got so confused by all the crowds of people and the sheer size of the mall, that I got lost and essentially ran out of the mall like a pussy. I never did get that jacket.

hahah. I just figured because Sawgrass is more of a tourist attraction down here. We've got much nicer malls, but not as large as that several mile long beast.

That's understandable, that place was massive the first time I saw it. It was like Disney or something, it should've had it's own road map.

Exactly, then again in Wyoming I'm sure they would be accompanied by their moms seeing as I'm sure it's hard for a goth to afford his/her own house. Also, there's nothing in walmart to shoplift, well I guess if you're a goth then the make up counter is always a good idea.

hahah yeaah. here's the whole thing in case anyone wants to read it. it sounds better in context.
Known for playing impromptu gigs on subway platforms, and fond of banjos and glockenspiels, these Queens natives are about as friendly as a New York band can be. The plush, elegant guitar and keyboard arrangements of their debut make for pretty moments ("Starring") and bouncy pop ("Kilojoules"), but singer Judah Dadone suffers an attack of the cutes now and then. On "Hannah," he adopts a pseudo-rap delivery and rhymes "player-hater" with "lemon Now and Later." Mostly, though, Weathervanes is pleasantly nonconfrontational — like a Demetri Martin routine, minus the funny

Most of Weathervanes is serviceable modern rock, so it will find an appreciative audience despite its egregious derivativeness and a lyricist who seems like he'd use the word "inebriated" to talk about how drunk he got last night.

I hope they don't either. People of all ages were there though so I think they'll be okay. I just got the fun. double vinyl and the Steel Train 7"

Yeah. I love seeing that. The old and the new mingling together in an old record store. hahah. That Bon Iver/Peter Gabriel 7" is going for $25 on ebay. Wish I wouldve gone just for that.

They said they only got around 5 - 10 copies of it. It's unfortunate. Bon Iver totally owns the Peter Gabriel song he covers.

south park is great. so are jew jokes. the teacher in my practical applications of cinematography class would super glue coins to the street outside of his apartment building so he could watch people pick try and pick them up, in a game he liked to call "spot the jew"
