View Full Version : Uplifting songs for a funeral

Kapa73

It's a firm belief of mine that a funeral should not be a mournful occasion, but more like a joyous celebration. I'm in the process of creating a master list of songs I want played at my reception that illustrates this belief. Anyone got some suggestions?

I can think of some, but most are written from a Christian's point of view, so depending on your worldview, they might not work for you as well as they do for me.

That's pretty damn perfect.

Explosions in the Sky's "The Birth And Death Of The Day" may be instrumental, but I think it could echo that uplifting feeling you're talking about.

You're welcome :)

I asked if you thought it was uplifting or not, because everyone's reactions to it are different. Some smile, some cry. Me... I smile with tears in my eyes.

Which is why I want this song to be played at mine.

if they have a good overall message, it doesn't matter the point of view really.

in any case, I'm willing to give some a listen.

The first one I can think of off the top of my head is the hymn "I'll Fly Away," which is a favorite of mine but probably not relevant to those who don't share my beliefs. Jars of Clay has a pretty uplifting rendition of the song. I'm also a big fan of "How He Loves" by John Mark McMillan (or the David Crowder*Band cover), which is about a friend of his that died, talking about what meeting G-d on the other side could be like. Again, probably not relevant outside of Christian circles.

For a good non-faith-based song, try "From the Morning" by Nick Drake. I think it could be relevant.

As for me: "Anywhere I Lay My Head" by Tom Waits. Because I want a New Orleans funeral. Otherwise, it's not overly relevant.

I'm still new around here and the Nick Drake forum doesn't seem to do too much business. Didn't know he was liked by "so many." That makes me pretty happy, though.

It's no Brand New thread, sure, but Nick Drake love on this site (at least amongst certain groups of users) isn't that rare. Vinh's Pink Moon avatar, if nothing else, helps to spread the love.

I know. You want the album that changed your life to have a good looking cover. Not the case.

I could rep the cover to Averi's Drawn to Revolving Doors. That one's pretty neutral art-wise, in my top five and very few people know they exist.

I agree. Art deserves more careful consideration than many artists give it.

I'd be curious what you think of my band's art, to be honest.

It's passable for the purposes of a band like this and would fit in just fine at Hot Topic. Not sure what I think beyond that. It's cartoony, and the music is poppy, and there are also electronic elements that fit the spaceship, so it makes sense, I guess. Intergalactic art for intergalactic music. I think it'd disappear amidst other albums pretty easily, though.

Fair enough. Gracias for the input. I think I really dig having my music called "intergalactic" though. That's kinda rad.
