View Full Version : Difference between respecting and liking music?
Shhhhhh!
01/10/10, 05:13 PM
I find myself often describing bands that I should like (same genre, same style music as I listen to) as bands I "respect" rather than "like" or "listen to." I'll listen to them, appreciate the skill/effort of their music but I never really feel a need, or want, to listen to them.
Does this happen to anyone else? Do you think it's possible to respect/appreciate music and not like it, or does that seem to defeat the whole purpose of listening to music?

I think you're the only one.
Definitely happens to me.
Couldn't ever get into Brand New, but I have a massive amount of respect for them as musicians/lyricists/scene saviors.

The Beatles. As hard as I try, I can't get into the music, but how can you not respect what they've done for music.

Why do you think you should like a band? Just because a band fits a genre/sound you enjoy doesn't mean you're obligated to, or should feel as though you must like them.

Wrong or right, there are some bands an educated music fan is "supposed" to like according to critical consensus or general sentiment or whatever other nonsense. It's up to them whether or not they give a shit about that. Personally, I stopped caring awhile ago and it was a great decision. I've enjoyed so much music since then. But the critical hierarchy exists.
Example: If you don't like Radiohead, half the people on this site would think you're an idiot.

I think most of the die-hard Radiohead cats aren't stupid enough to confuse taste/enjoyment with knowledge/appreciation of the medium.

I agree. And hopefully, they won't. Doesn't mean the expectation doesn't exist.
And I think you have more faith in the kindess of Raidohead fans than I do. Haha.

you can like, kinda like, and not like whatever you want. that's the best part of art. But when i'm forced to listen to something i wouldn't normally want to listen to i try to listen for the best musician in the band and overall best sounding instrument. and try to understand why people are so fascinated with this band or have so much hate for them

Hmm. Well, it's not a matter of kindness with our resident Radiohead fans as their ability to acknowledge that one's enjoyment of Radiohead is a mediation on taste and not a commentary on their knowledge of the medium.

There's bands I can't/don't get into even though everyone tells me they're "right up my alley". Some stuff clicks, some doesn't. In the broadest sense, because I might enjoy a certain post-hardcore act, doesn't mean I will enjoy every, or any, similar post-hardcore act out there. You decide!

I see it as this: music you like you will listen to over and over and music you merely respect is something you don't/can't listen to much, but you can respect the artists' musical talent

This is BS. If you legitimately enjoy a band on your own terms with no influence from others, then you're an educated listener. No matter what artist that may be.

And if an artist sounds good, I respect them. The two go hand in hand.

I agree with you about what makes an educated listener. But I think you're deluded if you don't think there's a critical consensus out there about what serious music fans are "supposed to like. I choose to ignore it, but it's there.

I don't have a concrete definition of what an educated listener is, but this definitely would not be it.

I can agree that this exists to an extent.

Radiohead are a band I just can't get into. Tried and tried and tried to get into them but they do nothing for me. I respect them however, because a band doesn't have a following like they do if they're rubbish.
Took me a while to get into Brand New...when I did though, they pretty much took over my life!

i respect any artist who's making music because its what they love. my opinion of the actual music is irrelevant, im not going to refrain from respecting another person just because of what i think of their work. if they have the balls to put a very important piece of themselves up for public scrutiny, the hard work and determination it takes to tour incessantly and make albums for recognition (especially with the pressure of a record label), and are out there doing what i want to do with my life for the sole reason that they love making music, then i respect that person.

those people are the idiots for not realizing music is subjective. and also, it's kind of an indication of the fact that THEY are uneducated music listeners because clearly they don't understand pop music well enough to know what traits of certain music forms are accessible and which of those don't coincide with radiohead's sound. radiohead is a technically impressive and very diverse band but anyone who thinks their sound is suited for everyone is a fool.
besides, being an "educated" music listener doesn't mean liking every widely acclaimed artist that ever existed, and it's pretentious to attempt to do this dishonestly for the sake of broadening your "music knowledge". being an "educated listener" is more about understanding their impact on music (whether its music as a whole or just that subgenre) and society (again, as a whole or just a specific subculture) and WHY they were acclaimed (although you probably have to know these things about a lot of artists in many different genres before you can really call yourself "educated"). an easy example is, maybe an educated listener completely understands the counterculture and messages of the working class that empowered bob dylan's music in the 60s and gave it longevity through each generation, but that doesn't mean they personally have to feel compelled to listen to him -- some people are turned off by his voice, others like me aren't really a fan of songs that stick with simple chords for several minutes even if it's for the purpose of complementing a lyrical storyline, and that's perfectly fine and does not have any bearing on their knowledge of the medium.

Oh wow. Missed that edit entirely. But yeah I think we're in agreement about what makes an educated listener. The willingness to listen to anything and everything is what makes an educated listener, not liking everything and anything.
