View Full Version : Do you text while you drive? [Technology Round-up]
CyberInferno

Texting while driving makes people six times more likely to die in an accident (http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/20091221/sc_livescience/driverswhotextaresixtimesmorelikely tocrash). Do you text while you drive?
This poll is in conjunction with this week's Technology Round-up (http://j.mp/APtech011110).

no. I hate when I see people talking on their phones and texting while driving. if you're not calling 911, it's not important.

I won't do it. If I have someone in the car with me, I'll make them do it for me. Toooo scary.

Nope. When I'm driving, my phone is in my purse on the floor of the passenger side, where I won't even hear it go off.
i chose "only emergency" but that doesn't make sense really. i would just make a call.
if i ever text whilst driving, it's at an intersection, or stopped traffic.

Yes. Last time I went to get a new cell phone, I told the girl at Verizon "Hey, I'm probably not supposed to say this but I need a phone thats easy to text on while driving..." She just laughed and quietly made a few suggestions. Too bad my state just passed a law making it illegal to text while driving.
I tell myself I won't do it anymore...but I continue to. I have an iPhone so that makes it even worse.

Usually have my girlfriend do it. But on occasion I try to pull it off myself. It would probably be easier if I had a hard keyboard and not a touch one.

did you just walk out of your drivers ed class?
I will if I'm at a stoplight or basically alone on the road. Most of the time, I'll just wait til I get to my destination or simply call the person.

i'm just really against this texting and driving ordeal because i value my life
and if other people are doin it then my chances are higher for getting hit.
in fact i almost did this morning by a fuckin mini van on the wrong side of the road who was obviously in the middle of typing, prob something unimportant like LOL

not often, and usually at red lights, but yes. though i should note it takes me like 3 minutes for a short text b/c i look up every second. it's pretty much: type a letter, look at the road, repeat. plus i have a keyboard, not a touchscreen, so sometimes i can text while barely looking at my phone. if someone else is in the car though, then i make them text. and i don't like to text when i'm on any road where the speed limit is more than 55.

I saw that awhile ago and it freaked me the fuck out.
I try not to do it, but a lot of the time I do. It's a difficult habit to break.
And I don't ever do it unless I'm driving by myself. I'm not risking someone else's life by doing that..
Tristan Needler
01/12/10, 10:41 PM
Very rarely. I almost never talk while driving either. Both are illegal here now.
Nope it's an absolute no-no for me. If I'm desperate enough to communicate with the other person, I'll call and talk with them through speaker phone so that the cop won't see. Lol.

I don't anymore, I went off the road and through a couple trees once while doing it so I decided against it. I don't even like talking on the phone while I drive.

01/13/10, 08:58 AM
yes. i have fashioned a system of mirrors to the top of my phone so i can see out the windshield. this enables me to concentrate on my phone and i don't have to keep looking up while i'm texting.

Yeah, I do. Probably not good, but it's habit.
I do text but very, very slowly. I drive a manual so it's really hard to steer, shift, and text. The only time I can actually look down is when I'm on the freeway on a straightaway or at a stoplight.

70% of you texting while driving. iPhone users should try StealthType SMS. Type a message without looking at the phone. Since iPhone has a touchscreen, you have to really focus on it...this helps avoid that. Check app store or www.stealthtype.com

only if its vital .. which normally means im texting a girl ... hmm
I do from time to time. Depending on what the conversation is about. If it's just random chit chat, then no. And if I have someone else in the car, I ask them to do it for me.
have done this numerous times.

Driving while being on the phone is absolutely illegal in australia, no idea how america allows you to text while driving seems crazy.

I do. I understand why it's wrong, but I do believe I'm careful about it. It's not like I'm using two hands, or looking away from the road for more than a second. It's actually the reason I won't get a touch screen phone, because I wouldn't be able to if I had one. I frequently don't even look away from the road while texting, I just have the buttons felt out and memorized.

Where I live, as of January 1st, it is now illegal to text or talk on your phone while driving. I can talk and drive no problem but texting is whole new skill. ha ha
I never do it and I don't let anyone that's driving me do it. There's just no point in risking it.
I don't not do it, but it doesn't happen very often. I'm more likely to look something up on Google Maps or the internet while driving. I'm a badass driver, though. I agree that it's a really bad habit, but people that compare it to drunk driving are insane.

I said I do because I have in the past, but I think I've sorta outgrown it lately. I usually just talk into my phone, have it do the text for me, and then quickly glance down to see if it got it right, though. Texting while driving is dumb though, and I'm not proud that I've done it.
