USC has been a joke at basketball for a while. Except for a few teams. Anyways I loved every time when they spanked UCLA this year.

sportscenter said that he wanted to go to a big media market to help him accelerate the hype and thus accelerate his bank account when he jumps to the nba at the end of next season.

choosing LA is a fantastic idea.

USC football players basically live the life of pro athletes in that city, with the club and celebrity scene they got out there its definitely more than ideal.

been reading about this kid since he was what, 11 years old? he's a good one.

supposed to be. Looks like Oden and Mayo could become the first players to be called the best from age 10 and actually make it to the NBA. I don't think that Lebron got the same type of attention at a young age as Oden and Mayo have.

well he'll only be there one year anyways

i think lebron started getting hyped up around his sophomore year of high school if i remember correctly, and as soon as that happened, people were looking for someone even younger. SLAM definitely had an article about Mayo around that time. so 6 years ago would make mayo around 11 years old.

USC is building itself one hell of a basketball program under Tim Floyd. Pretty soon they'll be competing with UCLA for L.A bragging rights instead of getting stomped twice a year by them.

If hes only going for a year, it won't do much for USC basketball. They won't be able to build anything around him

it goes beyond him though. Floyd took over not long ago and they already are bringing in better recruits. It won't show up immediately in results because the program is really being rebuilt from the ground up, but nabbing guys like Mayo is proof that they can bring in the best recruits. People want to play for a guy who has been there and done that, and Floyd has to some degree (Chicago Bulls coach).

that is not true. if mayo can take the team on a carmelo like run in the tournament, the basketball program will gain a ton of respect and exposure, dont say it wont be much to build around.

he will also cause a huge spike in attendence at what is a predominately football centered school.

syracuse never won a national championship in basketball before carmelo.

You dont have to win a national championship to be a big time basketball school. Syracuse has always been a dominant Big East team, if they weren't Carmelo never would've gone their in the first place.

im a hardcore syracuse fan, i understand they were a huge school, all i said was that mayo might take syracuse on a carmelo like run, aka winning a national championship in his freshman season.

this is what i'm talking about ...the fact that we are even talking about USC basketball in July says something about the direction this program is headed into.

every school has to start somewhere and I think with someone like Floyd running the show, USC basketball might actually matter in the future.

USC can build a program despite Mayo probably only staying 1 season. He's trying to get his high school teammate who is apparently also a pretty high prospect to follow him to USC as well as a highly touted Big Man from i think the Cincy area. If he brings in those 2 with him, and if those other two just stay for 2-3 years then it's a big benefit to the program. It's not all about how long Mayo is going to be there, it's about how many other good recruits think about USC as a potential place to go as well as the traditional powers.
