View Full Version : Bands whose peak in popularity has come and gone

marsvoltamcr

Basically bands who are still around making new music, but for whatever reason, have lost a lot of popularity, and are continuously declining in terms of fanbase. A lot of these bands I enjoy so it sucks to make this topic haha.

A Static Lullaby
Hawthorne Heights
From First To Last
Chiodos (maybe not yet, but Craig's departure means it's not far off)
Saosin (maybe it's just me, but I don't see nearly as many people talking about them anymore)
Poison The Well

A Static Lullaby and Saosin were the only bands of their respective genres I liked (I dunno, heavy scene music or whatever). shame how far down the shitter they both went since 06

Personally, I thought A Static Lullaby's last album was pretty good. But it seems like almost no one paid any attention to it.

yup. hawthorne heights. i took some friends (who have barely ever heard of them somehow) with me to see them last month in a tiny ass venue with pretty much no one there. about a week later i showed them this video and they couldn't believe it was the same band.

Totally! Rattlesnake! was by far their best album they have put out and no one really cared for it or talked about it.

They definitely peaked around 2003, when they got no.7 on billboard. Same goes for Thrice but at least they're both still alive and kicking + progressing their sound. I think Thursday & Thrice are becoming somewhat legends of the 00's 'emo' movement, which is no bad thing.

Yes they're still huge, but in terms of mainstream popularity they peaked ages ago. I mean War All the Time got to 7 on the Billboard Top 200, Artist in the Ambulance got to 16 for chrissakes. Also, I saw Thursday live back in Nov and there were no where near as many people as last time, in 2006.

Surprising to hear all of this about Thursday. I didn't realize that people weren't really interested in them anymore, especially with so many people around here praising their latest release. Thrice however has done a great job in maintaining a solid fan base.

In that aspect, I agree. I can't stand going to shows and being surrounded by scene clones who obviously care more about saying they were there than the actual performance of the band.

But I can't understand why anyone would go to a show and not see as many of the bands as possible. The point of loving music for me is seeing and enjoying as many bands as possible. Doing anything else is just ignorance.

This one is definitely up for debate. Are they selling 10 Million albums anymore? No, but who is nowadays. Are they all over the radio? No.

But, this is a band who has solidified cult band status, and has sold out every show for 5 years straight now, playing large college venues across the country. They definitely have re-peaked after the release of Out Of The Vein, despite what album sales and radio play say, it just depends on your take of "Peak" is

wow, okay so

congrats for nfg for making it to mtv, they are one of the best bands of their kind hands down and have the respect of so many other bands in other generes that band deserved their success for a long time and they are a household name and still very popular kids just dont really know much about anything any more
this pretty much goes for alot of the bands that ppl are mentioning especially saves the day
if you logically think about everything these bands are what helped inspire some of the modern trash most kids listen to anymore, the actual idea of screamo was great because it would take the great high catchy vocals of bands like saves the day and even newer like coheed and cambria and bridge it with hardcore screams and heavier music, it started great with bands like silverstein but is now shitty with bands like i see stars and the devil wears prada

i agreee about hawthorne heights peaking out really quick
and yes a static lullabye did that too but their newest album is really good, even if they peaked out soon their cds keep getting better and better if you really sit and listen to them

I dunno, I mean, TOC hit up the largest venue in Portland (not including Rose Quarter/Garden, home of the Blazers), and it sold out at the door and literally 3/4th of the crowd left after BMTH played their 5 song set. Josh from FYS and were chillin and we were both amazed at Thursday's live show, he told me it sucked to be me since he got to see it every night.

Thursday/Manchester also played the same venue later this year and sold it out, so I dunno. Thursday is pretty popular still in certain areas.

are you kidding? I was so happy when all those 14 year olds got the fuck out of the way for Every Time I Die

FUCK. YES. when i saw them here in memphis, the place was about half full, and most of the crowd was 18 and older. such a change of pace from these stupid fucking scene kids with their suicide silence and bmth shirts.

That Finch's prime came and went a loooooong time ago.

Which is why I posted them.

There's still quite a few big fans around though.

has anyone said Brand New? I mean they were making a steady climb until this latest release. What a shame.
TBS peaked

I would have to say Underoath also peaked

Dance Gavin Dance peaked with their debut LP, but didnt fall too far with their sophmore release...died with their 3rd

Jay Z- He hasn't made anything good since The first Blueprint, or Vol2, whichever came second.

Drop Dead Gorgeous- These guys are the band that i dont tell people i listen to. Their stuff is good imo. First album was great, followups were decent, but...

Eminem- He can't make a good album, only great features (his verse on forever KILLED IT!!!!), but relapse...shite

I remember when Goldfinger were on the tips of tongues the world over.

John Feldmann is 42 now.

Sadly as much as I liked them as as easy it would be to work this into a joke- Funeral For a Friend

What? Really?! Daisy peaked at #6 in the charts in the US didn't it? And when I saw them at Wembley Arena (11,000 capacity?) the place was almost full, standing tickets were going for a fortune on eBay at one point.

Very true. I think they're probably just about as big as they're going to be right now. Playing the biggest shows they ever have. And it's a 12,500 capacity venue, and I'd say there were at least 12,000 tickets sold.

I saw Valencia mentioned... really? I'm thinking their new album this year will be pretty big. Then again, that's basically going off of my hype for the album, so maybe I'm wrong!

I think with Brand New, Thrice and maybe Thursday, their fanbase has changed but not necessarily fallen. The bands from that wave of mid-00s music that have diminished tend to be the ones who are pumping out similar music to back then, the ones who have evolved seem to cling on to their fans and grow.

The first time I saw Thursday they played to just over a thousand people when War All The Time came out. I saw them again a couple of months ago playing to about 100. They've definitely lost a lot of the popularity they once had.

People say Valencia, but I highly doubt it. The next album will probably be as big as the last one... I can't see any reason that Valencia's peak has come and gone.

Would be pretty hard for them to be on TRL now. However, when Not Without a Fight came out MTV hyped that album for sure.
