It is so hard to lose a pet, especially when they are sick and there is nothing you can really do...

My cat, canoe, died when he was 15 when I was twelve, thirteen maybe. He just had a seizure one day and died before he was going to be put down.
My dog jenna died when I was 15, she was ten. She had problems walking, she was a beautiful black german shepard. A few months after that we got a small dog named Layla, she died in the vets care when she was going to be spayed, autopsy was inconclusive if the vet was at fault.

My cat canoe died when he was 15
I'm sorry to be insensitive but due to the lack of comma I imagined someone hollowing out a cat and riding it, or a canoe shaped like a cat
sorry about your dog op

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. My dog "Scruffy" is 14 1/2 which is over a hundred in human years.. I don't know how I'll feel when she dies, I suppose I'm prepared for it.. Sorry for your loss, dude. Dogs truly are a man's best friend :/

Sorry to hear it. My golden retriever died over the summer. It was awful, she wandered off and unfortunately I found what was left of her, which is a terrible way to find a pet you've grown up with. It's always hard losing a pet you've grown so close to.

i wanted to cry, no tears came out. i got pretty choked up though, i guess we all grieve in different ways. i've never had a close family member or friend die, so it's new to me.
i carried his body to get cremated late last night. said my last goodbye, the guy only charged me half of what he should have, he was nice. didn't get any sleep though, didn't go to class this morning.

Paisley is my first pet, I adopted her at 8 and she's about 9 and a half now. I live alone, just me and her, and she is the best cat I could ever ask for. She is so loving and sweet and I truly can't imagine life without her. I hope she gives me 7-8 more years.
Like I said in the Bob Dylan thread, I'm so sorry about your dog.

My dog turned 15 in September. She's largely deaf and blind but from what I can tell she seems comfortable (as in not in pain). It's obvious she won't make it too much longer but I've already come to terms with losing her in the near future. We had good times though.
I'm sorry to hear that. It was so hard when I lost my dog.

Aww I'm sorry ::hug:: He looked like a really sweet, lovable dog.
We have only had fish as pets because the apartment building where we live doesn't allow cats and dogs, so the only pet we have had that has died was my sister's betta fish named Clifford (after the Big Red Dog) and I was the one that found him laying there--it was like he had just stopped swimming--he didn't float to the top or anything. We were all upset and cried..my dad was even sad about it too.
I have a betta now that two of my work friends got me as a present..his name is Linus and I've had him for 11 months now and I can't imagine not having him so when he goes, I will be really sad. :/
But I remember when my neighbors put their dog down when I was younger I cried and cried because I loved her (her name was Shadow) as if she were my own dog--my family would dogsit her when her family went on vacation and we would take her for walks too.

My first dog died about 5 years ago, had him my whole life as far as I can remember, he just died in his sleep. The dog I have now we've had for about 13 years ish and she has had some problems the past couple years but somehow she is still hanging in there. Sorry for the loss of your dog man.

I'm actually kind of glad I was away at school when my dog (RIP Shadow) was put down. I don't know how I would've handled it had I been home. We had some great memories.
I also had a goldfish named Hulk who was awesome in everyway. He ate one fish, and tried to eat another. I still remember my dad having to take half of a fish out of his mouth. I was devastated when Hulk passed on.

i'm actually kind of glad he died naturally, because we were just starting to talk about the possibility of having him put down, which i think would have been a lot harder. this past week, he was barely able to walk, and he lost his appetite. wish there was something i could've done.

There are two things in your post that stuck out to me. One - my cat was named shadow. Two - shadow died while I was away. Funny how similar stories can be.
I was living in Australia for a year, and over that year I had both my cats and one of my dogs pass away. It was pretty rough going for awhile.
thanks again, everyone.

For people around our age, it's pretty tough when a dog that pretty much grew up with you passes on.
I've recently adopted (long story) a dog and a cat and they're both middle aged, which means they won't be around for that long. It won't be as painful, but it's enough to imagine a fraction of what you are going through.
That said, an adorable Huskie I've known for some years is close to the end, and I won't even be able to see him and haven't seen him in a big while because of my current non-relation with the girl who grew up with him. She's going to take it real hard, she already is taking it pretty badly.

It's different for everyone, but my friend Sarah lost her cat she had had the cat's entire 10 year life. She went less than 48 hours before she adopted another cat. I think I'll be the same way. I'm not sure I'll be able to grieve the eventual death of my cat unless I got a new one to keep me company and to care for. Sorry to hear about your story, too.

Not necessarily true. I had only had my cat for like 8 months when she had a very near death experience, and it tore me up inside. I'm not sure length of time necessarily makes it better or worse. I'm incredibly attached to my cat and I've only had her since May of 2008. She's middle aged though, too. :-(

Hey, sorry about your dog :(
My cat is about 16 years old and she keeps pooping everywhere instead of in her litter box. It doesn't look like she's in any pain but still she's really old. I guess I can be thankful that she's lived this long and all the great memories she has given me :)

It's nice to see that there are actually some people on this website who have a heart. Usually everything is so fuckin' negative.
Anyway,
Sorry to hear about you guys losing your pets. I know how hard it can be because my family lost the dog I grew up with a little over a year ago. I have a 10 year old Jack Russell right now that might have a serious health problem. I've been sick to my stomach the past few days. I've moved all over the place the past 5 years and this dog has been the once consistent and positive thing in my life. So I'm just hoping it ends up being something simple like doggie acid reflux (GERD).

thats awful man, i know what you're going through. My dog, a Golden Retriever as well, died at the end of April last year and it was devastating. In February he had a tumor, which was successfully removed but he didn't come back the same. He was an old dog, 15, but nothing can prepare you for it. i still miss him very much.

i had a German Shepherd, he was like 14 years old. He was awesome. Old age hit him hard and quickly. In about a year he went from young to old, and passed away in his sleep. I would rather have lost my pet bird than my dog. House smells like bird!

when i was 14 my dog got ran over by one of our neighbors that was teaching his son to drive on our street. the dog died, in all its gore, and my dad started to yell at the man and then picked up my dog my the tail and slung it at the man.
i distinctly remember seeing all its insides ooze from a gash in its side.

When I was little, one of our dogs got hit by a car on a rural road. We had a lot of property back then and when we moved one of our bigger dogs didn't have enough room to run so we gave her away. That night she drank some anti-freeze and died. We've also had a dog die from tumor and another die from old age. It's always a tough situation, to say the least.

I kind of get what you're feeling. My dog Daisy has cancer right now, it showed up over the summer. I devoted my last couple weeks before college caring for her after her first surgery. It's hard to watch her go through everything... She's such a sweetie. We adopted her when I was eight, it's been about ten and a half years.
Your dog is beautiful, my best to you. Try to remember the good times.

when i was eight, we took a family vacation to san antonio. my spaniel Corey had been acting weird, and we were told he was likely going blind, apparently it's common? we were gonna try to manage. anyway, we left and left him in care of neighbors. i was just told a couple of years ago what happened and how he was acting the night they had to put him down...apparently he'd had some sort of brain or head issue or something, bleeding from...well. you get the idea. they put him down and had him buried by the time we got home. in that instance, i'm glad they did.
i had to put a cat down about two years ago, too. she had leukemia...i about died leaving her at the vet's office. i did that and bolted town, asked my dad to take care of it and came home a week later. i think i cried for a week straight, from the time i realized she was sick until like four days after the fact. (note - have your cats checked, people. it sneaks up that fast.)
long story short: i'm glad you didn't have to go through it...it's (selfishly) easier in the end in a lot of cases for you if they're where they love with the ones they love. i'm sorry for your loss.
We had our golden retriever, Bailey for 13 years. We had to put him to sleep 3 and a half years ago, and it still remains one of the worst days of my life. He was my best friend, and pets, especially dogs in my case, are so loving and loyal and really are a member of your family. To the original poster and to everyone on here who's posted about a pet they've lost, my condolences and best wishes. In time, all of that will fade and overall you'll remember all the great memories you had with them and the great life you provided for them, and that's what is most important.

My dog died in early 2009, she was a 13 yr old staffy, she was epileptic and had such a bad seizure that it muddled up her brain she ran around the house for a good hour and fell down the stairs, she couldnt see infront of her properly and didnt know who any of us were. It sucked but we all came to conclusion to put her down, it was the best thing for her but I couldnt go with my dad and brother to get her put down otherwise i would of lost it, she meant more to me then some of my brothers do.
I will never have a dog as good as her so I know how u feel, atleast she had puppies so I can still go visit him seeing he was given to a very close friend :D
