We've been hard at work on LP2 and are planning on recording in the first couple three months of 2009 with Jacques who did OWTH's "From the Bottom". I think we'll have enough for 14 songs and we'll use 2 for a split 7" with a yet-to-be-determined sweet band and they'll both come out on some yet-to-be-determined label(s). Vinyl for Resignation Day should be out on Kiss of Death Records by Xmas and might just end up becoming the must-have gift of the season by my calculations.

So we're in the process of writing the next album. We've got 10 or 11 songs now, at varying degrees of completion, and i have one more that's basically just a demo on my computer with drum machine drums and stuff. We're hoping to record in late January or February, but we'll see. The end result will be 12 new songs.
So... this might be kind of lame, but i'm going to try posting updates on the writing and recording process on one of those Twitter pages. We'll see how it goes. If you have any interest, you can check it out here:

and if you get a Twitter account you can "follow" it.
Possibly kind of stupid, yeah. But let's try it! Expect an update every few days; more as we get closer to actually recording.

We're playing a show April 2nd at the Triple Rock with our friends Dear Landlord and Red Phone Dispatch. Banner Pilot Signs to Fat!
From the land of Dillinger Four comes Banner Pilot, a bunch of Midwestern boys that had us at “whoa-whoa”. They are set to record in their hometown of Minneapolis at Terrarium next week, and will put out the record on Fat come Fall. Check out some older tunes at their MySpace page. (http://www.myspace.com/bannerpilot), and their upcoming show dates right here. (http://www.fatwreck.com/tour/single_artist/95).

Just started off Day Two by shaving off my beard-- originally I wanted a bit of beardiness in this record but this morning I had second thoughts. Let's hope I made the right choice.
As for yesterday, it wasn't actually a full day-- we booked a half day for the sole purpose of getting sounds/tones/whatever down. See, usually what happens is you start the first day around noon by setting up the drums. This tends to take hours, and then you still have to pick out amps and set up mics and stuff, and before you know it you go "Ack! It's 6:00 and we haven't started recording yet!" You probably don't actually say the word "Ack" but you know what I mean. Either way, what tends to happen (for us at least) is that you then feel like you're behind and skimp on the getting-sounds stuff and rush right into recording. Days later when you're mixing you realize you should have spent more time upfront but then it's TOO LATE.
So, this time around we booked a half day devoted solely to setting up and getting things to sound good. I think this was a good call-- it was way more relaxed, we spent more time on stuff then we usually do, and things are sounding really good. Of course, it was sort of tedious in parts-- the vast majority of the time was spent on drums, and I know very little about drums so there were a lot of exchanges like:
"Which ride cymbal sounded better to you?"
"....is the ride cymbal the pingy thing?"
"Yeah"
"Well, i think they all sounded pretty good"
At the end of the day, though, the drums sounded pretty sweet-- I think we have a better snare sound than we usually get, too.
Also, the bass is sounding awesome-- I decided to use the studio Ampeg rather than my GK and we got something out of it that sounds pretty close to what my bass sounded like on the Off With Their Heads album. Kind of like..... a piano that's come to life and is growling at you, you know?
Such technical details are probably boring to read about I suppose. What else did we do? I felt like boxed wine for some reason so I bought some boxed wine and will get cracking on that later today. I'll report back on the flavor of it. I also bought a bag of Doritos called something like "Last Call Jalepeno Poppers", the bag full of neon lights and stuff. There was also one called, uh, "Midnight Tacos" or something. Are the Dorito people running out of ideas? I don't even like Doritos. It was an impulse buy as I stood in line. "You're a sucker" Nick said as I grabbed a bag. But here's the thing: based on the packaging they clearly want you to eat these new flavors late at night. But I'm not going to listen to their brain-washing advertising: I'm eating this shit today at around 3pm. Can't get me, Corporate Whores at Doritos. I do what the fuck I want.
Ok, I gotta go meet the rest of the guys for bagels now-- we're starting at noon today. The plan is to get 7 songs done on drums today. Think we'll do it?
Look for more interesting studio blogs than this one in the days to come, as we start actually recording music!

We mastered it yesterday. Really excited for it to come out-- it's definitely the best thing we've done so far. I know every band always says that about their new record, even if their new record is a steaming pile of dog shit. I mean, do you ever hear a band say "Just finished the new record. It's not nearly as good as our old stuff. Kind of sucks, even. Catch us on tour"? Of course not.
But this time, we're totally telling the truth.

They're selling DHARMA INITIATIVE BEER coozies at their merch table! Apparently people aren't quite getting the joke, which is a bummer. But either way I picked up two and it felt good to be able to drink something from a LOST-inspired coozie. Just saying.
Also? I drunkenly told Nate that I really dug his book last night, and apparently he has a new one being published in another month or so. It will probably be available via the band themselves much like the last one.

It's a compilation of his fanzine "You Idiot." Definitely some great writes in there. You can pick it up here (http://nategangelhoff.com/youidiotbook.htm).
I think my favorite chapter is the one devoted to preachy video games of the eighties. Anti-drug, pro-religion, he tackles it all! And it's all incredible. "Jesus & the Gang" begs to be played.

From Fat Wreck
We are thrilled to work with Banner Pilot on the re-release of Resignation Day out Sept 14th! Jacques Wait (Soviettes, Off With Their Heads, Dear Landlord) remixed and remastered the12 original tracks and added two bonus songs that are out of print. Originally released on Go Kart records you can score Resignation Day digitally through them on Sept 14th and we’ll be handling the CD and vinyl
Take a peek at what Nate from Banner Pilot had to say:
When we originally recorded Resignation Day back in 2007, issues came up during the recording that left us with little time for mixing. As a result, the record didn’t sound too hot. This was kind of a drag ‘cuz we didn’t feel like we did the songs justice. But! Sometimes you get a second chance; sometimes you can take something that was subpar and make it right, like when that Jason Mraz guy covered Blitzkrieg Bop. In our case, we were able to get Jacques Wait (who we worked with on our last album Collapser) to take a look at the original tracks and take a stab at remixing them. What he came up with was awesome, sounding like a new album. Usually something billed as a ‘remix’ will cause you to say “Uh, I guess the guitars are…. warmer now?” or “Oh, that’s cool that the ride cymbal has more zing in that one part now. Glad I bought this again”, but in this case we’re talking about a dramatic difference. Plus we added two more songs that are out of print, re-did the layout, and even changed around the sequencing. It’s like a whole new experience, maaan.
So if you checked out the album the first time around and didn’t dig it, give it another chance. We think you’ll like it. It’s like that one fairy tale where the first bowl of porridge kind of sucks but the second one is perfect.
count me in for this re-issue!

"We’re stoked to get this release sounding the way we wanted it, and it feels like we’re finally able to do the songs justice. A few people who have heard it so far have said things like ‘I had no idea there was a lead in that part!’, and that’s cool to hear ’cuz we forgot some of that stuff was recorded, too!
Next up for us is Riot Fest and then a tour with our pals The Dopamines down to The Fest. Should be great. We’re working away on our next album and have about 7 songs that seem solid. Aiming to record next spring hopefully!"

So we have 11 songs that, while not done yet, are likely to end up on the next album. That means we need 1 more. For #12, I was going to try to write a song that sounds like Archers of Loaf meets Green Day. It probably won't work, but who knows? Any other mashups worth attempting? Sometimes it's a good method for getting a starting point. Like, maybe Creed Meets Spin Doctors ends up as great, unrelated song. - Nate.
