View Full Version : Megan and Ryan's ap.net Radiohead marathon

so megan is at my house and we're doing a marathon of our favorite band this sunday, january 17th, at approximately 2 PM EST, and we want as many radiohead fans who post on this site to join in with us. every album -- yes, EVERY album -- from Pablo Honey to In Rainbows.
we'll be using this thread to post a running commentary as we follow our generation's most prominent alternative band through each of their phases, from shitty "we wish we were nirvana" britpop to "hey let's deliver a giant fucking middle finger to everyone's expectations and make weird-ass electronica music" to "you know, why don't we just do a pop record? we can already do it better than everyone else, and we'll put that shit out for free and still be millionaires".
so if you wanna join in and be fanboys and fangirls with us, sunday at 2 PM EST. or maybe you want to discover this band and see what all the buzz is about. maybe you're just not familiar enough with this band and would like to see more of their multi-faceted appeal. download the rest of the discography if you dont have it all, and we will be starting at 2 PM sharp, so arrange your playlist accordingly beforehand and be ready to press play to join in.

I read this as Meg Ryan's ap.net Radiohead Marathon. I was confused, but seeing as how she's out of work wouldn't have been too suprised if that was what it was.
In Rainbows was a pop record?

I'm not being snarky when I pose this question, but why are you attempting a "mass-listening party?" I mean, I don't get the "coolness" or fun in everyone listening to the same thing at the same time. If we all decided to listen to whatever I'm rocking now, I don't think that would effect my enjoyment of the record(s).
Wait, or is the purpose of this to garner a collective listening marathon and discuss it in real-time online? That would be kinda cool. If so, kudos. Discussing the works as everyone is listening it together could create some captivating discourse.

I almost never sit on the forums for six straight hours, and when I do, I'm always really mad at myself. This is a neat idea, and I'm looking forward to the final outcome, but I just can't justify myself sitting on my laptop all day listening to Radiohead. Maybe I'll do something similar in the future for the sake of an article for a magazine or something, but not just out of love for the band (which I don't love as a whole as much as some people), at least not now.

I'm not all that big on most of Radiohead's work (save for Amnesiac and Hail), so I won't be participating, but I suspect one of the appeals is that novelty of collective listening making for a communal feel. It's really radio-esque, when there were only a few channels, ensuring that most people were listening to the same thing at the same time, and that can lend itself to commenting on a certain aspect of a song that everyone else can easily identify with or retain because they just listened to it.
I don't know, it kinda sounds flimsy and it's a bit silly, but I understand the appeal in it (even if I don't share it).

I don't get it because people are just going to be saying the same things they always say because people talk about radiohead all the time. It'd be cool if it was somebody that doesn't get talked about here a lot but one could almost take part in this discussion without even being involved in the listening part.

I agree entirely, and that's why I believe it's a bit silly. I don't think we could get a listening party for a more obscure or eccentric artist here (or maybe we could and I'm underestimating the community, I don't know).

We should do something like that, much in the way we'd feature those retrospective album discussions on the site. Maybe we could do a thing where all the SotS guys get on MSN, start listening to a new release and document our impressions in real time. We could then publish it as a roundtable review or dialog.

Honestly, it would only be interesting (to me) if the tunes were new to everyone so that the conversation consists of genuine first impressions as opposed to rehearsed/rehashed input. "Idioteque is, like, so creepy." Great.

hahaha well obviously we're hoping on more comprehensive input than that. when megan and i listen to music together, we tend to point out minute details in the music/production and perhaps describe detailed images or moods or memories the music may bring out in us. overall though this is supposed to be a unique form of communal interactivity, that many of this site's users can enjoy and participate in at least in part, since most of them listen to and enjoy some of radiohead's music regardless whether the rest of their tastes coincide together or otherwise. it's not a rehashed circle-jerk of the band so much as the contribution of many different perspectives on each stage of the band's career from people with different musical backgrounds. the fact that everyone will be listening to the same thing at the same time increases the sense of communion and creates a focused, indepth discussion of each particular song/album rather than encompassing, vague blanket statements. for example, rather than just saying "sail to the moon is an awesome song", i can comment on the chord changes segueing into the song's midsection, with a leading note that gradually rises into climax, and perhaps another user will comment on the lyric lines at that point coinciding well with the transition or whatever else stands out to them at that point in the song.

Why not just have a big AIM group chat? Probably would be easier to use and have a more relaxed atmosphere. Either way, I'll gladly participate for the two Radiohead albums I have. It'd be cool to do this with other bands as well. Though, I don't think anyone is surprised you picked Thom Yorke and The Art Seizures as your virgin. Another good album to have a big AIM chat for would be the new National album, whenever that comes out.
I agree with Todd that it would be more interesting to do this with an obscure album, maybe an from a genre that no one on AP is really into. It's always cool to see how different people's first reactions are to more quirky music.

I understand how you'd derive enjoyment out of this, being big on the compositional side of music, but for most, it seems as though they wouldn't even need to be listening to the album to chime in which Togepi pointed out earlier. I suspect most of the contributions will be quite similar to what you'd find in any official thread. But hey, if people enjoy it, it's all good.

Hmmmm you have a point here. I was thinking traditional music from other parts of the globe like China, where the music instruments are entirely different or maybe music that virtually no one on AP is into like minimalism. I could be wrong about minimalism though, I think Phillip Glass has been mentioned around here a few times.

I know nothing about it hahaha. I've heard it a few times when they have those chinese opera things on pbs but other than that I haven't really heard it played. I'm sure there was a time period of Chinese music when they were influenced by Jazz or Classical, that would be interesting. What's the difference between music from China and Taiwan anyways?

Maybe I've just become to accustomed to the the sound, it's no longer interesting to me (I am Asian, as you may have deduced by now haha.) Well, the orcehstrated music is pretty similar, I think. But Taiwan has it's own unique folk culture, and they have a lot of traditional folk songs and such. My mom knows a bunch of them ha. They all sound pretty similar to me. Chinese orchestrated music is definitely more interesting than their modern music scene though...I wince at much of it.

Well if the rest of you coming in here to complain would man up and join us, then it would generate SOME discussion in this community. I mean really. Radiohead is one band that almost everyone enjoys a piece of, and this is an effort to get some active listening/discussion going. Like a book club.

Yes, that may be the one I listened to.
Possibly. In their defense, all of the tracks off of Tarot Sport are like that. But after an entire album that is a pretty gigantic fire itself, they throw in a stick of dynamite to close it with FOTFS. So, so good.

it's just the completely serene atmosphere of this song, his voice is so somber, and that guitar has so much reverb on it as it just wails off in the distance. it's just pure desolation, one of the first radiohead songs i've felt could accurately represent every facet of a certain feeling or sentiment.

Black Star is pretty good in my opinion. It was one of the first Bends tracks I really came to know. I hate (for the most part) when fading is used to enter or leave a song though.

i love how the main riff of this song has 3-measure phrases. it sets it apart, that walk down in the third measure.
this bass/drum section's kinda corny though. with the harmonies almost reminds me of "joker".

I'll be too busy to notice if I end up moving there. There are many great things about Canada though, so I'll most likely stay. If I ever get bored, I can just go shoot stuff with a gun. I realize I can also do that in Texas, but it's just not the same.
