View Full Version : Three PS3s OR One PS3 and 3 Mac Minis

So my dad asked my family today if we would like 3 new PS3s (We already own 1) or 1 new PS3 and 3 Mac Minis. We'd use the PS3s mostly for multiplayer co-op games. The Mac Minis are Intel though which we only have one Intel Mac at the moment. So PS3s or Minis?

I'd hesitate to call him a "dick bag", but based on what little I've read, he doesn't seem to spend his money well.
How about your dad just buys a new controller, and put the rest of the money back in the bank?

Maybe he could send that money to people who need it. Not some kid who already has a PS3. I believe an earthquake just happened somewhere...oh where was I reading that?

Well one controller still leaves my three brothers out, and obviously he has money to spend, it's not like he hasn't made a budget for this. Instead of going on vacation or something he decided to buy these.

First of all, when I "splurge" it's like a $60 video game. And you mean all these people live in one house and each would have their own PS3? I understand the price drop but that's insane amounts of money. Also, we're not talking TVs here. We're talking a video game system where in a house only one may be necessary. I'm not even concerned about the offer of Mac Minis. Jesus Christ. I thought I had a nice life, but I suddenly feel poor.

Yeah, each person would have their own PS3 so we could co-op. We have the TVs, they wouldn't be top notch but what the difference really? My dad happened to have made about the same amount this week as we did in all of 2009 so he figured instead of a vacation or something (He doesn't really go outside the house much) he gave us this offer...

So instead of going on say a cruise or skiing in Utah, he's gonna buy video games and computers? Sedentary lifestyles seem fun (and believe me, I love sitting around doing nothing), but if you already have the PS3 and it appears your father can make this money after one shit, TAKE A VACATION!
Why the fuck would ANYONE need 4 PS3s?
I mean, I've got a PS3, and 360 and Wii, and I consider myself to be a hardcore gamer, but having 4 of the same console is just beyond ridiculous. Yeah, you can play LAN, but really, playing split screen is just so much more fun in so many ways.

It really is. I'll be the first to admit I spend a LOT of money on video games, but buying 3 fucking PS3s on a whim is just beyond me. Hell. I'm not even saying he should go donate all that money or something. If I had that much, I'd just buy some more games and controllers or something, and still probably have some cash left over.
I would however, consider buying some more 360s. At the rate that those things break, it's best to just stock up while you have the chance.

You really enjoy playing split screen better? As far as I see it, it's no different than having four computers which I guess is a bit uncommon but when your dad is a computer program who runs his business at home it's seems normal to play over the LAN.

I understand this is making me sound incredibly spoiled, but I'm really not that well off. My family's income fluctuates every month sometimes we can't even pay the bills and my mom is freaking out through the whole month. Other's we make a fair amount of money. I got clohtes and a calendar for Christmas I'm not as well-off as it sounds.

Like I said this month my dad has made more than last year and hopefully his clients will give him more work (Which is how it usually ends up) but that's irrelevant. I don't see my question being answered anytime soon though, I suppose I'll tell him do what he pleases.

I don't have enough money to GO on vacation or go Christmas shopping you twat. I used the money that I got back from my college books to use for christmas money and I haven't been able to buy my books this semester because I can't afford to drop half a grand on something that I'll only get 100 back for. And it's not my fault that he probably lacks awareness. Not my responsibility.

No need to get hostile now. Let's say I posed this question, "Should I go on vacation to Disney World or to Washington D.C.?" What would you have said? The circumstances aren't any different. Are you implying it's my responsibility to tell him?

No, but honestly it's not going to affect the way he spends his money. I'm sure you're convinced I'm this terrible, spoiled kid anyway though, and no internet argument is going to convince you otherwise so should I even bother?

I'd say you have really bad taste in vacation locations. And probably the same thing that I said here. It's expensive to go on vacation and most people don't have that extra money that they can just drop. If it fluctuates so much like you supposedly say it does, then save it. And, I never said that it's your responsibility but there's clearly a self awareness problem if your dad doesn't know about what's going on.

It was hypothetical. Everyone seems to think we're dropping every penny we've made this month on this, but we aren't so that eliminates the saving option. You don't think my parents have thought the slightest bit into the future? My dad doesn't know cause frankly he doesn't care.

Multiple ps3's in a single household is retarded, but it's a joke that so many people here feel the need to jump right up on their soapboxes and start preaching. If his dad wants to go blow a grand after pulling off a successful deal, let him. People who go on vacations/buy frivolous things if the $$ become available aren't evil. Granted, there's way better things to drop a thousand bucks on than multiple ps3's, but when you have people telling this kid he'd be just as bad if his dad wanted to go on vacation instead, it's pretty clear that a solid handful are reacting in a fairly over the top manner.

Well actually, I do know how this guy earns his living, well I should say how his dad earns his living. His dad is " is a computer programmer who runs his business at home", so I know that much at least. And I did far more than imply, I outright said he should. Again, because he made it seem like this was a REGULAR thing. Not something his dad came into because of a successful week/month/day whatever. Hence, why I should he should donate it. However, if this isn't something normal, I sort of understand. Either way, FOUR PS3's IS UNNECESSARY! TOTALLY UNNECESSARY! In some people's world, ONE PS3 is unnecessary. And you fool, if you think I thought the world was a perfect place you truly are a moron. I go to school and live in Philadelphia where I see how the world isn't perfect everyday. I was being sarcastic about the perfect world. Twice. Sarcasm. The fact that you didn't realize at least the second time is truly astounding. I was being rhetorical about what his dad does, the point was don't tell people what to do with their fucking money. It seems like both are a bit of overkill. Mac Mini's are essentially a waste of money (even when it comes to Mac specs), and even for 5 people 4 PS3's are overkill. I'd tell him to go with 2 more PS3's and 1 Mac Mini, if he has to get one. Otherwise get an iMac

P.S. Was Ahhh! Real Monsters made into a game? If so, I clearly need to find that game and whip out the old genesis.
I think everyone needs to back off of this dude. First of all, who cares what he does with his money? Of course there was a huge tragedy that happened a couple of days ago, but the point was brought up that what if this happened three weeks ago? How about four months ago? The Haiti earthquake is a tragedy, but this was something planned before that. Give him a break. Second, all of you bashing this guy and his father for "wasting" money. Puhleez! How much do you spend on entertainment in a week? month? year? So this guy has a little extra cash. Instead of spending it on CD and DVDs, TVs, vacations, or other crap that you deem worthy of your money, they like to play games--as a family. When was the last time you were able to do that with your dad?
ImARealBoy - I'm not a gamer so I don't know which is better. However, if you find out that your dad ends up with an extra PS3, he's welcome to send it my way! Congrats that your dad was successful enough to afford this luxury. Enjoy it. Don't let socialist douche bags bring you down.

I was going to say "lucky" but then I realized "spoiled" is more appropriate.

Unless your family's last name is Brady or Gosselin I don't see the need for 4 PS3's.
hahah. truth. if your family really needs another PS3, just get one more and save the rest of your money for the month you can't pay your bills.

There's a lot of crazy in this thread. Kid's super spoiled, but I don't really care to argue. Those who are arguing about the donation should know that argument's in vain. I agree with these two comments above.

it sure was. the most underrated game from that era of gaming ever. it was so much fun. it was a platform/adventure type game and you fought giant dogs and scared people and stuff. it was incredible.

if i had that kind of money to spend on home entertainment i'd get a stack of blu rays, a stack of new games, a couple tournament edition arcade sticks, a bag of the stickiest of the icky, and an awesome meal or 6.

his family has extra money right now. i just hit that point in my life where i've realized that i can't just buy things just because i can afford them at that time...you have to prepare for the future. he said there have been points where they can't pay their bills. i'm terrified i won't be able to afford bills/rent! in november i realized "holy shit...yeah, you have the same amount of money you've been making/spending on rent, buying shoes, shots for girls you want to try to sleep with, etc....and all of a sudden you realize you don't have the money to buy all the christmas presents you wanted to buy for people.
all i'm saying it's a hell of a reality check to realize that you don't have the money to fix the sick car your mom bought you as a graduation present. this kid's parents are setting him up for a lifetime of that feeling. i'm smart enough to learn from it the first time...but it sounds like this kid's parents are perpetually spending money they don't have.

My brother and I (who is of a similar age) shared a video game system until we were both around 16 or 17. Did it suck? Yeah, at times. So what did we do?
We saved up our money and bought another xbox. Having 2 (of the same) systems isn't completely out of the question, but 4? That your dad is buying for you?
If your brothers really found sharing to be a hassle, save up your money and buy it yourselves. To be honest, I wouldn't have disagreed had you said "should I buy another PS3?" because it can be hard to share a system amongst 4 different people, especially when they are really into video games. But 4? Good god.

Holy shit this blew up. Thank you to the ones who actually answered my question, and to those who realize it's ridiculous to jump down my throat for this even if you think 4 PS3s in one household is absurd. By no means is this an ordinary event for me. Essentially it's my Christmas since we didn't have any extra money during Christmas time.
