lol. I hated their first release. This one is okay. I don't find it particularly exciting to listen to either, but it's pleasant.
Still don't get the hype with them, regardless. I am seeing them with my girlfriend in 2 months, so hopefully I'll enjoy them more live than I do on their cds.

Its funny how they were acclaimed as being one of the top indie bands of 08. I still don't get their sound, i cant listen to more then a few songs at a time, so getting through their album is painstakingly difficult. Can someone explain them to me, cuz I seem to be missing something. Either that, or theyre just, like earlier posters have mentioned, really boring.
And why the hell are you fighting about avatars? Who cares
Vampire Weekend is awesome, and Contra will be one of the top ten records released all year, believe me. Haters gon' hate.
They just seem so average. I feel like I've heard it all before. They're not bad, just not worthy of the hype.

The greatest review of Vampire Weekend you could hope for, courtesy of Buddyhead.com

Vampire Weekend
“Contra”
Castrated Sissy Recordings
Hi, I’m Meathead. I could have sworn there was already a review for this album on Buddyhead, but I guess I must have been thinking about one of those other websites that wish they were as cool as Buddyhead. Weird.
Remember when Contra was an awesome Nintendo game where you blow up terrorists from outer space? Well, let’s all give a big hand to the fuckfaces collectively known as Vampire Weekend for pissing all over that fun memory and naming their new album Contra! Now, rather than associating the word with kick-ass laser guns and the Konami code, we can instead think of precious hipsters singing in falsetto about white people stuff over xylophones. Yeah, that’s much better, thanks!
I made it about two and a half songs into this moldering heap of sonic smegma before a dull, throbbing ache began to form right behind my right eye, and the pain only got worse the longer I listened, spreading across my entire head and down into my back. When the music (for lack of a better word) was finally, mercifully finished, and the “enhanced interrogation” stopped pouring out of my headphones and into my brain, the pain magically stopped as well. Of course, I’m not saying there’s absolutely a connection there, but I think it’s worth noting, at least.
Also worth noting: time behaves differently when listening to Vampire Weekend. It slows down to a sluggish crawl that defies all previously established laws of the universe. The first track, while allegedly three and a half minutes, feels closer to approximately four hours as singer Ezra Koenig repeatedly enunciates the word “horchata” as if he just discovered it for the first time at Whole Foods and couldn’t wait to use it in a song to show everybody how cultured he is. After miraculously enduring the entire album, I went into the bathroom to vomit, and as I passed the mirror I discovered that I had aged quite noticeably. At this rate, I would probably be eligible for my AARP card after a second listen. Do not listen to this album.
http://www.buddyhead.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/vampire2.jpg
If it’s all right with you, I’d like to take a second here to share what may very likely be the single worst moment on Contra. Mind you, there aren’t any moments on it that are more pleasurable than getting your genitals gnawed off by feral pigs, but there’s one in particular that made me visibly cringe with pain. On the second song, “White Sky,” the chorus consists of the single sissiest whine I’ve ever heard come out of a human being. It’s the type of sound that makes Thom Yorke sound like James Earl Jones. It’s reasonably safe to say Tori Amos has bigger testicles than this guy.
I know Vampire Weekend thinks they’re doing something really clever by mixing reggae and “world music” with shitty indie hipster folk rock. Their perceived cleverness completely soaks through every single second on every song. I can picture Ezra and pals in the studio smirking to themselves and high-fiving each other as they record songs that will inevitably be played during the end credits of Michael Cera movies. Although, to be honest, I prefer picturing them getting run over by an out-of-control wheat thresher (while still high-fiving each other). But that’s just me.
The last song on the album, irritatingly titled “I Think UR A Contra,” sure sounds like a last song on an album. It’s got the obligatory weepy strings and deep, introspective lyrics that apparently sum up whatever the fuck this jerk-off parade was supposed to have been about. It’s great to listen to while slamming your head repeatedly on your desk and hating yourself. It’s not too fast, so it’s easy to keep up with the beat before you pass out.
Oh, wait. Shit. There was a review of this on Buddyhead already. My bad.

You certainly could -- it's a fairly predictable collection of critical darlings -- but the list isn't all that representative of my personal favorites which would defy the purpose of the ridicule.

Agreed. I bought their second album, and I'll admit I'm enjoying a lot more than I thought I would. Tracks 2-4 are flat out annoying, but the rest of the songs are pretty good. 'Cousins' is by far the best song on there.

Yes, Blink 182 is fast paced music which is not boring. I don't have a problem with Vampire Weekend but it's music that could put you to sleep. Blink may not be unique but they also aren't boring. A Blink song gets people jumping around at a party, not sure how that is boring.

Being stimulated by something has absolutely nothing to do with the music being boring or not. Or unique. I love Blink-182. But their music is super simple and is not very intelligently written at all. First songs I learned on guitar were theirs because it takes absolutely zero practice. Simple music. Vampire Weekend may not be your style but the music is interesting and is written well. They know how to not only write a catchy pop song but a good one. Blink is catchy. And funny. And that is all that they have going for them.
