The Mars Volta (http://www.myspace.com/themarsvolta) have posted a new song entitled "Viscera Eyes" on their Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/themarsvolta).

Yes! My first news. The song is 9 minutes long so they split it into 2 parts on myspace.

I think the song is sick. It reminds me a little of L'via L'viaquez.

I agree, I really like the whole song, but I wish it wasn't split into 2 parts though, it's so frustrating when part 1 just ends suddenly

Yea, this is great. It is a bit reminiscent of L'via L'viaquez. Can't wait for this album.

Have you ever heard Cicatrix? Their original idea of the song was drastically different. It actually had a much groovier feel, and the part at the end of the song where he sings "drag your vessel, punch your clock in" was the main line in the chorus and "i've defected" was in the background. With that said, i love Cicatriz.

I think you guys are asking for something different than what the Mars Volta are providing. If you want a rock band, go listen to Gatsbys American Dream or the Rx Bandits, but it seems (based on 4 records) that the Mars Volta have a slightly different vision.

The song is awesome, TMV fans will all appreciate it. And the best part is, no matter how much bashing people on message boards do to their music, they wont give a shit, because they dont make music for the hits, they make it to capture moments.

dude, i thought their first lp was great, probably because they still had to listen to a label as far as song structure goes. the second record was garbage. there's one song that starts with 4 minutes of frogs/crickets chirping. sweet, thanks for that amazing song! the last song has 4 minutes worth of music and 26 worth of noise. it's a copout. they can fill up entire albums with noise and people like you will think they're 'visionaries' and their music is 'ground-breaking,' but it's not. they're just recreating led zeppelin live shows, in a studio. even zeppelin had the sense to not put their hours of noodling on studio records.

p.s. neither of those bands are rock bands.

Well, regardless of whether you appreciate (or notice) it, there is meaning behind their "noise." I'm sure they're not sitting around saying "well lets put out an 80 minute album, but i don't feel like writing 80 minutes worth of music, lets only write 60 and fill the rest with noise!"

the difference between me/fans of frances and nonfans is probably that i dont see those parts as noise at all... i personally took it as like a film score obviously setting a scene like a movie.

ex: end of cygnus = someone runs outside, you can hear traffic
ex: miranda = beginning: nighttime, these frogs in puerto rico
ending: you can hear a shower, probably a part of the story....
etc etc

For fucks sake, EACH SONG NAME is named after a character. I dont know why thats so hard for people to digest, i guess people want 3 minute straight rock songs. Those are fine too, for what they are, but its like junk food ,disposable trash you use for what it is and throw it and forget about in less than 2 years while you move on from disposable band to disposable band.

And for people wanting more Deloused, thats my favorite TMV album also, but I love them all a ridiculous amount and I guess the way i feel is i dont want another Deloused at all.
Deloused was already made, thats what Deloused is for.
Its like making another movie about the same goddamn thing.

right, they're saying, 'let's put out an 80 minute album and write 15 minutes worth of music and fill the rest with noise.' well, i lie, it looks like for this one they said, 'let's write one riff and then repeat it a hundred times, that'll fill up some space.' i mean, i understand there's meaning to the noise, but there's no reason to have that much of it for that long, it becomes pointless. about 75% of their last album was noise and filler, it's weak. just because they can put 74-80 minutes worth of sound on a cd doesn't mean they should.

UndertheTELE
07/08/06, 10:00 AM
But that doesn't make sense. Do you really think they were just writing filler? They're soundscapes. If it doesn't interest you, then why listen to the music at all? Thats like listening to Explosions In The Sky and saying "well it's good but i wish there was more singing." There are plenty of other bands out there being a little bit more straight forward with their music, obviously TMV are going for something deeper.

snowtires
07/08/06, 10:05 AM
no, i don't think they were writing filler. i think those two dudes are sitting in a studio somewhere, looking in a mirror and jerking off, thinking about how much 'deeper' they are than every other band out there. i listened to this song because their first album was good, they had something cool going. because of that, i thought, hmm, maybe i'll give them another chance and check this out. and now they stole another 10 minutes of my life. if you want to listen to a good band that does noise the way it should be done, listen to old man gloom or isis. at least the filler shit is interesting. who the fuck wants to listen to someone ringing a bell for ten minutes?

Cicatriz JPL
07/08/06, 10:07 AM
If you have anything negative to say about the band, then you really just arent grasping the concept. Omar writes the music as if it were a movie. All these soundscapes that you guys are calling bullshit 'fillers' are all part of the script. De-Loused was clearly their best album yes, FTM was good as well and I hope this album to be the best yet.

I disagree, and i think that some of you are missing the point of the albums. I listen to the mars volta because they offer something in their style that other rock bands don't provide. If i wanted rock from these dudes, i'd listen to ATDI (which i often do, WHEN I WANT ROCK). Sparta is good for that too.

I loved mars voltas first cd but after they started adding 4 5 mins of the same riff to each song it got annoying. I'm perfectly fine with bands writing 10 min long songs as long as they are actually 10 mins worth of music. Not 2 min intro of some random noise 4 mins of song than 4 mins of some random noise that just repeats itselft. If you need to find the ideal mold for a perfect long song than don't look any further than tool. Best band ever at being able to write epic songs but still hold the listeners attention. Mars volta makes me fall asleep as I'm listening and I can't even concentrate on what they are doing because some of it is so boring. First cd still one of my favs ever wish they would go back to making nice 6-8 min songs that are catchy and good.

CrucifiedHeart
07/08/06, 10:34 AM
i will 100% agree that the music is totally selfish but i just personally feel the same way about my music as well. I write what i wanna write, if someone doesnt like it i do not care whatsoever.

it reminds me of fugazi even, they charged $5 per show and they had certain rules they liked to apply. if you didnt like it, you could take your $5 and leave, its that simple. Its not a "i'm so genius im better than you" thing, its simply, if you dont like it, dont listen and leave in a very polite and straightfoward manner.

its weird to me that people would complain about an artist being too self-centered while also complaining about bands that sell out. is there some supreme fucking perfect balance that exists that i dont know about? of course this band gets accused of being so self-centered, cause they throw so much of themselves into their fucking music. I'm so sick of the accusations of pretention, pretention is when someone acts like theyre really smart or artsy or etc etc but theyre full of shit. The Volta more than back up their art , but I guess people want them to bend over and cater to them and write albums for "the fans"

Would you like fries with that?

First of all, the new album is amazing. Secondly, I was put off by all the bloat that was in Frances the Mute too, but you have to admit that CD has plenty of interesting ideas. Listen to Cassandra Gemini again. It's damn near perfect. A friend of mine made the point that if they had released that song as an EP, you guys would have nut all over the place.

1) First off, I agree with you that FtM had some great ideas. However, it is FAR too ambitious for its own good, IN MY OPINION. Who said you have to agree with me and vice versa? I actually think it is EXACTLY like an EP. There is that much substance, and the rest is their best impression of being a jam band. Not that they aren't super skilled at it, but give me some fucking meat with my potatoes. (give me substance in my albums, and the jamming fluff during the live shows)

2) I am pretty sure the fact that you are a reviewer doesn't mean the way you pass judgment on me has half an ounce of value. If I wanted to say they sucked, I would say "they fucking suck." The work "fucking" would be in there to help with my voice. Don't be a moron and assume I cannot express myself. If you weren't so lazy as to scroll down in my sig, you can read about 2 pages about why I did not care for FtM. And from what I hear from this, it will still hold true. Since you are so much better than everyone else, why don't YOU go write for Pitchfork?

I am just sick of hearing phrases like "masturbatory, self-congratulatory shit," when you know as a writer you were giddy as fuck for stringing those words together. Let's be honest with eachother as writers, man. You know when you can piece together a turgid diatribe about bands you don't like, that you're a giddy fucker. I am too, but I just kind of realized it's counter-productive. I once called Frances the Mute masturbatory pap, but so is using that phrase in a review, don't you think? Interesting note for people that didn't get the 4 minute noise at the beginning of Miranda.

if you splice the title track (that didn't make it to the record, but you can DL it), on top of that noise, it goes along with it. Thats the only logical reason why they did it. I heard you can splice the title track (again, 'Frances the Mute' is the name, didn't make it to the album) with Vismund Cygnus, they compliment each other.

So when you hear senseless noise in Frances it not only a. fits in with the story. it b. fits in with another song.

... no you just have to have a brain a cd player and a computer. 2 out of 3 aint bad either.

so, what, you're suggesting that you make an mp3 of the song or rip the song to your hard drive and then play it along with the cd player? that is way too much work for 99% of the people who listen to cds. it shouldn't be like a game of tetris trying to listen to a band, you shouldn't have to see how you can take parts of the album and try to match them up with other parts, or even a song they released completely separately from the album. although, i guess one i could see why they would do that, i mean, for that 1% of kids who are so obsessed with the band to do something that ridiculous, it's easy money on the part of the band. if they're so fucking amazing, they and their fans shouldn't have to make excuses for their shitty noise interludes, like, 'oh, well, if you put this noise and this noise together, they make sense.' that shit should make sense in the first place.
