July for Kings - Monochrome
Released: June 23rd, 2009
Label: None
Some bands create music that appeals to a small niche of listeners and thus doom themselves to obscurity. Every once in a while a band with mass appeal goes completely ignored. July For Kings belongs in the latter category. July For Kings released their debut album "Swim" on MCA Records in 2002. The band was dropped from MCA and later released a stellar EP titled Nostalgia in 2005. Their latest release "Monochrome" is an excellent record. It would be a shame if this record were to go ignored.
The album opens with three excellent songs. Opening song "Houses Made of Stained Glass" is a great introduction to the record, and a good showcase for Joe Hedge's capable vocal work. Track two "Say It Now" is an all around excellent pop song. "Fighting Fires" is catchy guitar driven number.
"Monochrome" features a wide variety of styles that keep the songs from blending into one another. The vocals and production on the album are incredible for an independent release. If I had not known, I would have had no clue that this wasn't a major label release. Go ahead and give Monochrome a listen. July For Kings are definitely deserving of some new fans.
