View Full Version : PotC 2: Dead Man's Chest shatters single day Box Office record

Pirates of the Carribean 2: Dead Man's Chest destroyed projections (which were already astronomical) and pulled in $55.5 million on it's opening day, easily beating the previous record of $50 million on a single day set by Star Wars Episode III. Projections have now been changed, with Dead Man's Chest looking at $135 to $140 million over the three day weekend, easily defeating the old record set by Spider Man 2 ($114.8 million) and likely to defeat whatever the new record that was set by Vince Chase starrer Aquaman earlier this year. All this without getting my 8 bucks yet. By my current estimates they would have made $55,500,008 with my money, so they should have sold me better, then their record would have been even more iron clad.

Needless to say I'm excited to look at my HSX account on Monday.

This movie is way overhyped.

Miami Vice is going to be badass.

Just got back from it - mediocre script, decent acting - but the script turned the characters either incompetent or just out of character quite often, the score was the same as the Rock's (listen to the two side to side) and it was not nearly as fun as the original. Holy christ was it long too...best part of the whole movie was Transformers. I'll give it a 7 of 10 because I'm feeling generous, and it was decent enough. Just a big disappointment when it comes to the whole hype machine.

Update: Pirates finishes the weekend with an estimated $132.8 million, besting the previous record by $18 million. This is with estimates likely on the low side.

it also became the fastest movie to 100mil at only 2 days. The first movie ever for that to happen.

seems like they've been overestimating opening weekends most of the time lately. also i don't think they're taking the world cup effect into account enough for the sunday estimates, so i think it'll be slightly lower than that. won't be off by too much though, probably right around 130.

oh hell yeah, 16 mil above the current record holder (which is 6 above #2). not too shabby at all. i really hope none of the studios blink next summer and move the big releases to wednesday. that way we get to see spidey 3, pirates 3, shrek 3, and harry potter 5 duke it out for what will almost certainly be a new #1 three-day opening.

Oh, no way. You could have had the TRANSFORMERS teaser and I'd rather take Rocky Balboa. Saw the clip on YouTube and it looked sweet. Just wanna see it on Apple or in theatres.

Boxing is wonderful.

Plus I am so bummed that Pirates II made in one day what Superman Returns did in its opening weekend. That's a sick, sad thing.

i liked pirates 2 better than superman returns, but i'll take supes, x-men 1 and 2, and the usual suspects over pirates and the ring any day of the week.

Pirates 3 will be released first and it will take the new new #1, but Spidey or Shrek is going to kill it. Spidey > = 140 million (I want to say 150)...especially with the new trailer.

spidey: may 4, shrek: may 18, pirates: may 25. should easily make for the highest grossing month in the movie industry ever. like i said before though, at least one of them will probably move to wednesday. makes business sense, but kinda takes the fun out of things.

Status check on the internet forum, you're right, I supposed I am a nobody compared to your 25,069 posts in less than two years. Technically however, I am your elder as I've been here longer than you have, so neener neener. I just do not think you know anything about movies and I haven't seen you in a thread in a long, long time (besides your proposition thread) and was rather happy not seeing you around. Oh well, all our wishes don't come true.

Well you're insane. Don't get me wrong, I like Verbinski. The Mexican is great. Pirates I and II are nice. Weather Man is nice. Even Mouse Hunt and the Ring were good.

But come on...Bryan Singer is fantastic.

I loved this movie. Too many people had high expectations. I have no idea what they were. After seeing this movie twice over the weekend, I realized why I love it. It's fun, the plot makes some sense, the dialogue is good, and the characters are developed.

Everyone bashes the characters, but you see more of everyone and what their true intentions are. You see Sparrow for the coward he is that can trick anyone into what HE wants. You see that Will and Elizabeth love each other and will do anything to be with each other. You see that the two stupid pirates are still just that. You see that the older guy (not sure of his name) would serve Sparrow to the end of the world (no pun intended) because of his respect for his ability in piracy.

The worlds are beautiful. The lines were still great. There are a few where they blatantly ripped off things from the first movie, but still great. The first line of "Why's the rum always gone?" comes off forced, but is quickly redeemed by Sparrow standing up, and taking a couple steps then saying, "Oh. That's why.".

And I am amazed. This movie broke the 4 day record (122 mil) set by X3 in 3 days. That is pretty amazing.

And to the discussion of what will break records, SM3 has no chance. Spidey one everyone saw and it became a hit. But, spiderman 2 didn't break anything. So, not everyone liked the first, and I know many people that didn't like the second, so I doubt it will break the record. Shrek 3, good chance, but I see it as more of a long running make a shit load of money then blowing its load in one weekend. With the amount of hate people seem to have with this movie, I don't see POTC3 breaking the record. And HP5 has a huge following, but none of the previous 5 have touched it, even the old record, so I don't see why getting further into the series (where you will naturally lose people) will help them break the record, especially since HP5 is darker and a weaker story as it sets up 6, which in turn sets up 7. I think I got most of em. But if everyone didn't LOVE your previous effort, you are not going to break this record. I think only Shrek 2 has that in its favor.

Yeah, I'm not sure it can but I think you might be underestimating the Venom factor because everyone wants to see that. Plus, it has four freakin villains. That is just crazy stuff.

But I dont think the film will appeal to the masses as much a Pirates does. No matter what age or sex, Pirates is pretty popular. Plus Johnny Depp is dreamy!

Spider-man 2 opened on a wednesday (which drastically lowers the 3 day fri-sun take), and broke the record for 5 day opening. the general trend for all these franchises is to have bigger openings with each installment (after picking up fans through dvd, pay-per-view, and movie channels).
