Music:
Foreign Islands (http://www.myspace.com/foreignislands)– If you’re into Les Savy Fav or Neon Blonde, check these guys out. They’re from New York and I am convinced they’ll be huge one day.
Askeleton (http://www.myspace.com/askeleton) – a project that started out as just former Hidden Chord member Knol Tate and his laptop. Now a full band, their brand of catchy lo-fi is perfect for fans of The Shins and The Velvet Teen.
Cordova (http://www.myspace.com/cordova) – made up of former members of the semi-popular late 90’s pop-rock band Weston, these guys come with a fairly decent pedigree. They’ve ditched the pop and added more rock. Imagine a nastier version of Deep Elm era Brandtson.
Hella (http://www.myspace.com/hellaband) – if there’s such a thing as smart noisecore, then Hella are just that. Plus, they’re HUGE in Japan. What’s cooler than being worshipped by the Japanese?
Book:
Technicolor Pulp (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0446518190/qid=1152459574/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-3632120-0063206?s=books&v=glance&n=283155) by Arty Nelson – You can get this on Amazon for a penny (plus shipping). The story focuses on Jimi Banks, a 24 year old, unemployed college dropout who’s trying to find himself; Banks seems to only be looking at the bottom of a bottle and in the beds of attractive strangers. Nelson got both praised and jeered for his style of writing (“slacker-novel” was the term used most frequently), but I have become a big fan.
