I forget who recom'd this book to me, but I ended up buying it. And it's crazy.

Who's read it? (I'm only like 60 pages in)

Part of my drive to finish it is to get why people are saying it's so terrifying. I must know! That's good news.

Can you explain the senseless rambles in some parts? Like explaining Acoustic Light and echo's for like 5 pages (and me not understanding any of it). Also, why does the author (I looked ahead in the bookstore, but didn't read ahead) have pages and pages of people's names as footnotes? Is there any sense to it? Did you read some of the non-sensical stuff or did you skip it?

the echo is explained so that later in the book when things echo that shouldnt, and things that should dont, it adds to the general horror atmosphere.

to be honest, most of the footnotes like that are useless (ie. pages of names, citing made up books and places etc) but some of them are really vital to the book. the longer you read the better you will be able to pick apart whats the most important

I see. I understand about the echo now, because I just read the part where Karen is afraid to go in the dark/dimly lit room and the kids voices echo from it.

Also, did you read any of the appendicies? are they an important part of the book? Because I know The Navidson Record only goes to page 500 or so.

Great, great book.

It may have been me who gave you the rec - I was talking about this book for a while a few months ago.

Kyle, didn't I also tell you to get it?

appendicies are crucial. id say you could only understand about 60 percent of the story without reading them.

Awesome, I'm glad.

Haven't talked to you in a while. Seen / read anything worth checking out?

I saw Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which was excellent. If you haven't seen Hard Eight (it's listed under 'Sydney' on IMDB), it's simply incredible. Paul Thomas Anderson can do no wrong. And I was hoping to see A Scanner Darkly, but it wasn't released here. And I saw Cars, which was usual Pixar genius.

The complexity of the story gives it infinite replay value. I could read it over and over, and catch something new every time.

KKBB was one of the best movies that nobody talked about last year. I read a scanner darkly a couple years ago and cant wait to see that asap, and cars was a visual masterpiece. I'll check out Hard Eight next time i get the chance.

ive been rewatching band of brothers all week and if you havent checked that out, i'll rec that for you.

SUCH an incredible book, so many layers too it. The best part is when you finish reading it and you ponder what you've just read.

I was on the HOL message board and everyone has a crazy theory about the book. It's pretty interesting to read because a lot of them make sense.

I keep trying to read this book, but as a person with a low attention level its VERY difficult. and its so involved that reading a few pages at a time just makes you lose track of everything. it needs to be digested in large parts at a time and its just impossible to do without a chunk of time to devote to it.
I'd love to finish reading it, but by now Im going to have to start all over again. it gets a little frustrating, but without a doubt, its at least my favorite thing to say "Im reading". excellent conversation piece.
Have you listened to the corresponding POE album? I havent given it a chance, I thought It'd be better to listen to after I completed the book, so as I could enjoy it more.

I'm sure the lyrical content of POE i great and interesting, but i took a listen to them a while ago and i'm just not a fan of the music. One of the members of POE is Mark D's sister or something right?

what's POE?

And I knwo what you mean, ShallowDepths. I think I'm only absorbing like 60% of it sometimes. But I plan on re-reading it in the future...

And I'm on the part right before Exploration #4 (pg 100 or so) is the crazy stuff coming?

POE is a band which wrote their latest record on the subject of House Of Leaves.

Poe is supposedly MZD's sister and it's not the band that's called Poe, she goes by the name Poe.

Good song, good book, and TFOT songs that are influenced by it are good too.
