If for some reason you managed to miss all the commercials on TV...and I didn't feel like bumping the old thread from a while back.

I'm excited for this, it's sounding more and more like what the Village should have been marketed as, which is less a thriller and more of a drama/story type of movie.
And I think Paul Giammati is going to be the perfect front-man for an M Night Shamalyan film...

I have loved all of Night's movies. me too...and the reason I made this is because I had a few kids tell me the Village was terrible because of the twist last night (they also created the worst card-related drinking game ever, so I consider them idiots anyway).
I actually hope it's true that there is no major twist...as in the Sixth Sense, etc
looks fucked up.
I had to look up the people in charge of Art Direction and Costuming...because I agree with you there. The Art Direction people have done stuff in Big Fish and Jurrasic Park: The Lost World. The Costume designer has done a lot of movies, Almost Famous, Be Cool, and Vanilla Sky among them...so the blend of styles is probably what makes it such an odd look

There's been a major plot twist in all of M. Night's movies so far, so I doubt this one will be any different.

That was the thing...he's been quoted in interviews several times for this movie in saying that there isn't one (not sure how much I can trust that though).
The fact that they have revealed so much plot detail, and that it's a departure story-wise (still supernatural ideas, but this one seems to actually hold to the fairy tale idea, not like the Village where it was just fake mystic stuff) makes me think it's going to be a sort of fantastical/epic type story, a lot like Big Fish actually that I think about it.
This has the potential to be the only M. Night movie I like.
(Besides The Sixth Sense).

Shamalyan's "twist" gimmick got old fast. I hope this one doesn't have one but I can't help but think it will.

I have loved all of Night's movies.
Same here. It bugged me when people didn't like The Village not because they didn't like the twist, but because they thought the movie was supposed to be a horror film and it wasn't. M. Night's movies have never been horrors. They've always been psychological thrillers so why should they have expected any different with that one?

It's real cool - The assistant director on all of Night's movies goes to my church and I'm friends with his son (Who can be seen hiding behind a log with two friends in the Village... He's the furthest away from the camera!)... So, I'm in on all the cool stuff. For instance, the movie that was actually suppose to follow the Village was a movie about two boys and a wee-gee board (I'm aware I butchered the spelling :()... But, for whatever reason, Night changed his mind.
I'm looking forward to this movie only because I'm a fan of all of Night's stuff... Signs being the exception. I can't wait to see what kinda twist is in store for us this time.

This movie could either be awesome, or suck. So far I like what I've seen. I can only hope it tops Unbreakable, which I think is Night's best movie so far. Sixth Sense was awesome, but by the time I saw it, eight people had already blown the ending for me, so I didn't really get to experience it. But the part where Misha(sp?) Barton first shows up, still scares the hell out of me.

Interesting...I'm not sure I've ever seen anybody put Unbreakable as their top one before. I think it's my 2nd favorite, behind The Village. The Sixth Sense and Signs follow.

Yeah most people didn't seem to like Unbreakable as much. I enjoyed it alot but don't know if I could put it above his others.

Unbreakable was my favorite, too. It was a good story.
Also, to be fair - alll of Night's movies are hit or miss. For instance, the Village didn't really win big with critics... But I loved it. Yeah, it's kinda like that.

Unbreakable was my favorite M Night flick and why does no one recall that Signs didn't have a twist at all? The Sixth Sense is a damn good movie too but I really don't like Signs or The Village. Actually I hated The Village except it looked really good. Meaning the way it was shot was very nice.

The big twist in Signs was the when you find out that everything happens for a reason, ie...all the water she doest drink, rorys asthma, pheonix "swing away" and how all of it ties into keeping them alive through the invasion (if you havent seen it yet....]
anyways, im super pumped for Lady In The Water...i love all of M Nights films especially The Village and Signs, the other 2 are also fucking awesome. But i think The Village has the OVERALL best performances (nothing can top Haley Joel Osment in the Sixth Sense) amongst the cast ie...Joaquin Pheonix, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sigourney Weaver, Adrian Brody, and especially William Hurt.
...and come on.....Paul Giamatti is the shit

yeah...and while I can't trust that fully, I believe with the story that there will only be little mini twists to keep it interesting...instead of relying on a major twist to suprise people. The Village was a step in that direction already

Damn...and yes, there will be a twist...but in a different form. It's a twist in the sense that any thriller needs a breath of fresh air to keep it interesting, not in the form of say the Sixth Sense, where it's meant to blow you away and leave you stunned. The Village was in that same form...which makes me believe that.
And fuck, 33...how?

holy fuck...it has a lower fresh rating on rotten tomatoes than Little Man...that is not a good sign
Oh god, and one of the two "fresh" ratings says this in it's praise:
""The critic in me wants to boo and hiss and cry in disappointment. The 5-year-old in me wants to stand up and applaud."
I guess this is what you get for ripping your critics...and if it's in this form, it's going to probably piss me off.
" Still, it's Bob Balaban who steals every scene as a know-it-all movie critic, who offers a running commentary to the story, announcing what part everyone should play in it."
I'm all for self-reflevity and minute pot-shots from time to time, but if he uses a movie critic to do it...just wow.

John Stewart challenged M Night on the daily show and M Night said there isn't a major twist but instead several small twists that will happen throughout the movie. To which John replied:
"Is Bruce Willis really the lady in the water?"

I saw an early screening of this on Monday and I thought it was ok. There's actually quite a few laughs which was unexpected. The story has a great message which hopefully will not get lost on people. All in all it was pretty good and was paced quick enough to hold my interest. I wouldn't break down the doors to see it on opening night but it's probably worth paying 8 or 9 bucks for.

Well, on Conan last night, it was stated that it was based on M. Night's bedtime stories; Conan responded with "What kinda of bedtime stroy is this; GO TO SLEEP NOW" It was better in his voice. haha.

the village was a good movie if you saw it the first day it came out. otherwise, people would go in either A) knowing the twist or B) looking too hard for it.

dude.....the reason the movie is being raped by critics is because M Night openly takes a stab at them in the movie, its obvious....i dont doubt it for a second that that is why alot of critics are dissing on it. not one fucking second, and that is bullshit......and the mere fact that Crtics tore into the Village is mindblowing. that movie is so fucking good....Peter Travers of Rolling Stone is pretty much the only dude that knows what he is talking about when it comes to M Night films.....how anyone can not see the brillance in the Village is beyond me, ive actually listened to ppl say its a bad movie because of the marketing of the film, and how they were upset because it wasnt a horror....boo fucking hoo. what that movie says about human emotion and society goes way deeper than any other of M Nights films, and the performances are 2nd to none.

I feel like I'm one of the very few people out there who think that every movie he has written has sucked. And there would be a good reason for that...
In terms of cinematography and building the suspense, there aren't many directors that have consistently hit his level in the genre (look at anybody's complaint of the Village...that the build up was great, but the ending wasn't what they expected).
The very end to the Village was a little weak, in terms of the resolution...and Signs to me was not really up to the other 3 at all, but in all of them he is pretty solid throughout.
What makes me want to see Lady in the Water is because he is (hopefully) shifting from psychological thriller with a neccessary twist to a sort of suspense storytelling instead.
But, that he is labeled the "Hitchcock of our generation" or something stupid like that is very, very premature...
