Close call between Viva La Vida and Parachutes, but I went with Viva.

Viva La Vida is really thaaaat obviously better than an album with both The Scientist, In My Place, and Clocks on it?

Well see, you are mentioning songs. Viva is the only album where I feel like I consistently come back to the entire thing, every song all the way through. There are other songs on other albums that are great, but sometimes I only visit them for a few tracks.

I've never listened to Coldplay much because the of the little I have heard, it always followed the formula of 4 measures = 4 chords for 4 min. And they were never even good chords to begin with. I mean I could understand if you were going for some sort of minimalism approach...but they're not.

Sometimes. But not in this case.
And personally, I feel like there are limits to how simple something can become before it loses all creative merit.

That's a very subjective viewpoint of creative merit. It's difficult to discuss ambiguous subjects like creativity because what's beautiful to one person, may not be beautiful someone else. I personally love Coldplay. Just because it lacks much musical complexity/technicality, it still comforts my soul.

It is subjective. It's just my opinion. I said that. And to be fair, I don't think something has to be complex to be creative. It just has to be interesting. And to me, Coldplay is unbelievably boring.

What is a case then, when simple is good? I understand both viewpoints here, but I personally don't see them as that simple, where creative merit is lost. I'm just curious as to how much simple is enough, in your eyes.

To be honest, I've never listened to that much Coldplay. Although I do vehemently despise Viva la Vida and Clocks. I'm sure that someone could plausibly suggest several songs of their's that I would enjoy.
And I guess if I were to clarify, my qualifications for simplcity/quality depend less on the overall simplicity and more on the ability to employ other factors of interest. My interest can be held by things other than the complexity of the music. In general mewithoutYou is pretty simple, esp., their most recent release, but they're always lyrically interesting enough to hold my attention. I love the Eagles and particularly their older stuff is very simple, but man can they ever craft a melody. The whole idea behind minimalism is to shift the focus from harmonic complexity and rapid progression of the piece in order to place the emphasis elsewhere: gradual rhythmic varition, phasing, etc. (go listen to some Steve Reich). I think that pretty well defines my expectations. It doesn't have to be complex, but if it's not it should be doing something to stay creative.
Coldplay is one of those bands has been consistent in everyone of their records. I chose A Rush of Blood to the Head simply just because I had it for the longest time out of all of those. I feel like Prospekt's March should be up there as well even though it's only an EP

A Rush of Blood to the Head for me. Parachutes is classic, and X&Y almost got my vote for Fix You alone. Geez, they're good.

I would like to hear a musically intelligent response as to why "Coldplay sucks." I guarantee you ninety percent of the voters that chose that option picked it because Coldplay has gone mainstream, without even giving their music a fair shot. All 4 members of coldplay are highly intellectual musicians, and it shows.
For me, A Rush of Blood hands down. It's what inspired me to become a pianist when I was ten years old, and I still listen to it pretty frequently. Amsterdam is a beyond amazing song.

I personally chose Coldplay sucks because I've yet to hear anything of their's that didn't bore the pants of me. They write one short phrase that's "pretty" and then repeat it for the entire song. There's no development to the songs; there's never anything new or unexpected to hold my attention.
That's my opnion. You don't necessarily have to agree with me, but it is a musically intelligent response.

Sure, Clocks is just a repeated phrase, but seriously... they really dont do much 'repeating' of one motif or hook much at all. And about the development, I would say they are one of the most developed bands of the decade. They went from basic acoustic rock to a diverse orchestral masterpiece.

Viva la Vida?
And that's not really what I meant when I said development. The songs don't develop. They don't go anywhere. They start with one idea and just ride it through the whole duration. I just keep waiting for something more but that's all there is to it.
Also, I wouldn't call using a string quartet to make the same chords you were making on a guitar an orchestral masterpiece. I get really tired of people throwing in strings just to vary their instrumentation in the same tired formula. Rarely do people actually take advantage of the true depth and variety that can be achieved with the plethora of other instruments out there. Go listen to King Beetle on a Coconut Estate off mewithoutYou's newest release. That demonstrates a true grasp of what you can really do when you venture outside the guitar/bass/keyboard/drums box.
