The Golden Ball prize is decided by journalists at the tournament. Zidane received 2,012 votes, Italian captain Fabio Cannavaro finished second with 1,977 and his team mate Andrea Pirlo was third with 715.

Congrats. The only better way to end his career would have been if they won. Plus if he would not ended on that head butt/red card. i still am wondering if the ref on the line actually saw the penalty or not. Because they are not allowed to look up at the score board for an instant replay. Its by what they saw. Anyways, Zidane shall be missed

Fabio Cannavaro should have gotten it, he was the best player there. His defense let up two goals: an own goal and a penalty kick that resulted from an obvious dive. Plus he put in the winning penatly kick to win the cup. In my opinion, Cannavaro was robbed, Zidane only played well in the second round, how can this guy win the Golden Ball when the media was talking about possibly benching him during the tournament.

EDIT: he didnt score the last goal, but it doesnt matter, he was still amazing

My vote would of went to Cannavaro. He played like a monster the entire tournament, nothing went passed him. But then again, soccer has this fetish for only recognizing the offense, hardly do you see defense being commended. Oh well, Cannavaro still won it in my eyes. :D

truth. cannavaro did things that no other defender in the tournament could have dreamed in this world cup, and he got absolutely jobbed. he could not be stopped, and made some incredible plays in the back for italy. he really deserved to win it, it's too bad that defense does not get the credit that it deserves.

France would not have been in the finals had it not been for Zidane.

The same can not be said for Cannavaro.
