Searched and didn't find a thread for this. I watched the first two episodes, and it's a pretty cool show. Typically don't care for MTV shows, but this is different. I like that MTV is finally broadcasting a "reality" show about outsiders, other than MADE and True Life.

Apparently scripted reality. I'm thinking that it's a reality in that they are all true stories, but re-enacted and sensationalized for drama.

No, it's not how high school is at all. I mean, maybe in terms of girls being bitches and snobs to one another, but other than that, nothing is exactly like any show depicts it. But, then again, I went to an all guys high school, so my judgment is flawed, too.

But, yes, it's about a hipster girl named Liz that deals with being an outsider. I kind of like it, to be honest. I know it won't score me scene points, but it's so far a guilty pleasure of mine because I just kind of like the storyline thus far.

The Buried Life was cool, but I feel like the plot would get tiresome after a while. I don't know how many episodes I can watch of them breaking into places dressed as different people. I know they're going to do other things, but I feel like a lot of the things they do are going to be one in the same.

i will be honest, i watched this not sure why because its MTV and the only thing they put out that is decent is Nitro Circus

i noticed how every guy's hair was so overly "emo-swooshed" i havent been in high school in 2 years so maybe kids are all about that now

What's wrong with releasing shows to appeal to different audiences? And, overly emo swooshed hair has been an issue since Pete Wentz had it back in 2005, so that hairstyle is more or less etched in stone at this point. Wouldn't say that was MTV's doings.

I can see that. Like I said, I normally don't watch any MTV. This may be like a lot of other shows on MTV, I don't know, I just caught a few minutes of it and it kind of interested me more than most other MTV shows, in essence, a guilty pleasure. I also think I might be interested to see this portrayal of high school life because, like I said, I went to an all guys high school, so these kinds of shows always intrigued me because I never knew what it was like to go to a "normal" high school. I know that real high school is not much like this, but it's just interesting to me to see how writers/actors can portray high school life, to me, at least.

The only TV I watch is ESPN, The Office, Seinfeld, and Flight of the Conchords (when it was still on :-( )

No, it's not that cliche at all, at my old school there were like 800 "popular" crowds and all of them got along and none of them hated anyone else (although the last day the emo/goth kids got in a huge riot fight with all of the dumbass skaters). I even got along with half of the popular kids.

Scripted reality. And, people are just looking way too much into the characters/meaning. I'm not saying it's the next Seinfeld or something, just that it can be an enjoyable show and looks to be semi-promising on a channel that usually caters to stuck up brats. I imagined it was. I guess people just find issue with the advertisements claiming it's "reality television," when it's more so a real environment, and it attempts to emulate high school life. I watch with the same respect I'd watch Boy Meets World, in that Boy Meets World was like a true story, though it wasn't actually true.

when I watched it, I was disappointed because of the scripted nature. However I did find some parts incredibly funny. I was just stoked for Cameron because...well...fuck, even if its a shitty show, it's a pretty big deal for a 17 year old kid who wants to be in film production to be casted in an MTV show.

Yeah I wish it weren't scripted too. I mean, i do like the script they're going with now, and the storyline, but if it were real, I'd probably be into it way more. But, then again, if it were real, there'd be a lot more dull moments, and it'd pretty much be the same story of every other outsider in high school, making Liz nearly inseparable from all other high school outsiders. The scripted nature keeps it interesting, I guess. Either that or MTV is afraid to take a risk.

Their episode had me bawling like an idiot similar (in a twilight zone way but not even close in all honesty), and I know teenage couples who are in love and who get pregnant and give their children up, and it really tears them apart if they arent close enough, which in the end hurts the two parents in bigger ways.

I'm glad any show (especially one on MTV) is showing what the adoption process can really be like, the most I've seen is like Degrassi, and that show made it seem like nothing after the adoption episode.

Marketability, probably. While there are many others just like her, she probably embodies the characteristics, friends, looks, snobby classmates that these "other girls" don't. It was probably some sort of campaign on MTV's part to find a girl that's an outsider, in which many applied, and Liz possessed the characteristics more so than the others, or something along those lines.

The "hipster" argument gets old, though. Not saying on your part, but everyone calling her a "hipster" is just ignorant. To look at someone's Nike Dunks, skinny jeans, and vintage Chicago T-Shirt and assume you know everything about them is extremely shallow. Exactly. Point being is that it doesn't matter if it were Liz, Alicia, Mary, or Jane. MTV had a set in mind about what kind of show to make, for whatever reason chose Liz, and now people ask the question, "Why her?," when really, it doesn't matter, because any girl that could have been chosen, people would still call them a "nobody," and say "they try too hard to be different." Yeah, so she probably puts on more lipstick and acts more obnoxious when the camera's around, you would too, it makes for good TV. I don't think MTV would be interested in following around an outsider, with no friends, that avoids conflicts, "mean girls," and has no interests whatsoever. I guess I don't get why people care so much about, "Why Liz?," when really, MTV has been airing shows (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Real_World) about "nobodies" for 17 of the 19 years I've been alive.

I'm saying that if you believe every show that claims to be "reality" is "real," then you are naive, not that if you believed this show was real. This show very well could be real, I highly doubt it, but I'm sure it has some realness to it. I bet a lot of these things actually did happen to her, and MTV felt it would make a good show, so they reenacted such moments. So, that does, in essence, make it "real," but not "reality," if that makes sense.

I don't get why people say "She's not enough of an outsider to have her own show/consider herself an outsider," when the fact of the matter is, she is an outsider, in that she's not with the "popular girls." The fact that she's not THAT much of an outsider is evident in the watchers of the show's ability to relate to her. Sure, she may not be the TOTAL outcast with no friends, and plays Zelda all night long, but she is certainly not the typical teenage "hottie" at school. The fact she's not overly different is MTV's safe place in casting a girl that is different yet relatable.

I'm going to sound really naive but is this how high school really is? I've been Home Schooled since the first grade and with made and true life you don't really see the student dynamics. I mean it seems really cliche with the "Popular" crowd.

Liked it a lot, especially when she bitched out the blondes at the end, making fun of their boobs being bigger than their brains, haha. But, I was disappointed that they held off on the talent show until next week. But, I guess that's how MTV keeps people watching, haha.

Yes, I quite enjoyed it as well. I think Liz and Bryson go well together, he's so dreamy haha. I was used to having them air two episodes like last week, so it felt really short tonight. Sucks we have to wait a WHOLEEE week for a new one. I really enjoy the music of the show as well. After each episode I go and check out the songs and download a few. I just started listening to indie hipster bullshit music, so I can tolerate this stuff now.

All I know is that they're all friends in real life, and MTV came through looking for talent and so she talked to the producers and they liked her because she had stories to tell. So they decided to script a show (obviously more fantastically) off her life, but using her, her friends, and the people of the town as the actors.
