View Full Version : Have you ever stopped listening to a band because the members were douches?

Well there's a top 40 radio station where I live and I guess one of the d.j.s was engaged to the singer for Relient K. Then he cheated on her. My mom listens to the station and says she says a ton of bad things he did or whatever. Also, I read an article in Alternative Press once about Polar Bear Club. One of the members wanted to meet one of the members of blink-182 when he was around 16. The member of blink-182 told someone of the arena "hey, I said no kids." And the Polar Bear Club was so let down! Now I don't really look at blink the same. I don't go to shows much, but I see on here people comment and say certain bands are "great dudes." Well who isn't?

Sometimes you just have to look past peoples personalities and quirks. Just focus on the music they create.
Still a Chris Brown fan

I haven't stopped listening to anybody for this reason. I still think The Maine put out some catchy tunes even though John O. is a moron extraordinaire.
On the flip side of this, I really got into The Suicide Pact after meeting them in Worcester a few years ago; they were the nicest group of guys.

me and about 20 other people got invited in to see what was promoted as a say anything acoustic show before the concert that night. but then it actually just ended up being we got to see some songs from the soundcheck, and max was turned around facing the drummer the entire time and didnt look at any of us, not even between the songs. as soon as those songs were over he immediately left the stage and we still got to talk to the other guys, but it kind of ruined SA for me. i loved IDOTG the most because i felt it was great for what was going on in my life at the time but now that the self-titled is out i think i listened to it once and it didnt do a lot for me anymore. i didnt straight up say i hate it because i was pissed max snubbed us but my tastes have changed and i just didnt like it as much as IDOTG or IARB.
it's true you shouldn't ever meet your heroes in case they let you down.
also, the guitarist jeff turner told me that the nicest guy he ever met in any other band is matt from relient k, hands down. i think they are neighbors down in georgia

the only band i've stopped listening to, and it wasn't even a stop they weren't a favorite of mine or anything, for this reason was kiss kiss! Due to their lack of respect for the opening acts at a free show they played at purchase college. I've never came across a group of musicians who, may i add didn't have a crowd worth their arrogance, could be so rude. They even went as far as heckling the opening band for some technical problems. Things like that make me not want to listen to a band. Ever. But maybe i would think differently if they were The Mars Volta or someone worth something to my ears.

That's a really shitty reason to stop listening to a band, dude. Do you like their music or not?
You have no idea what was discussed between them and their management that led them to cancel soundwave. Besides, even if they did cancel just for the tour, put yourself in their shoes. One sweet show vs an entire tour of sweet shows? That's a no brainer.
Sometimes, things get canceled. Your life will go on. They will go back to Australia and when they do, I hope you go, because clearly that band and their music means something to you. That should be what's important.

I'll never forget my reasoning behind this.
UC Irvine in so cal, the Atreyu tour (i went because ETID was there), Chiodos opened for everyone. This was like 2006 i believe, BEFORE Chiodos most recent album anyways.
They were filming the live video for the track The Words 'Best Friend' Become Redefined, so of couse Craig mentioned that they were probably going to play the track a few times, they did, 3 times total.
The first time, the people were like whatever, didnt go all "overly crazy", so they played it again immediately. Same situation this time, but Craig said something like "You guys are going to look like assholes on film just standing there not moving!". so they played a few more songs and came to the final song, the third time.
People were STILL not getting into it, Craig was over the top as always, finding ways to show his skinny ass stomach and hips like he always does, posing for pics all homo-like. So the song ended, instead of saying "thank you for helping us make a good video, take care drive safe!". He just made a stupid fart noise in the mic and dropped it hard on the floor, then stormed off and probably went to go blog about it or something.

Never really got why how much of a prick an artist is can just negate one's body of work for the listener. Music's for the ears.
I once saw Angels and Airwaves playing and Tom seemed like the biggest douche but that hasn't turned me off any of his music. I'm not really a fan of AVA but Blink is one of my favourite bands ever, even though the band members can act like that. The music is more important than how the band members act I think.

Which is why I forgive him for the crap he pulls. He's a great rapper and his music holds up even after he does douchey stuff. Bad experiences get linked to different creative forms. You're listening to a particular song and your girlfriend dumps you? You associate that song with being dumped, and refuse to listen to it anymore. Same goes for liking a band; if they treat you badly or come off like assholes, it affects the way you listen to their music. It's just human nature.
I liked VAST a whole lot before I bought one of their records direct from the guy, Jon Crosby. He took everyone's money, then took TWO YEARS to send out the CDs. Blamed it on distro problems and merch issues and whatever else he could pin it on. Not once did he take responsbility for it, the guy didn't even seem to care. Problem is, he did it again with their next record as well. Ridiculous.
Further Seems Forever toured the UK not long before they broke up and they seemed like stuck up assholes. It didn't make me stop listening to them, but every time I put their records on, I think yeah, they were dicks when I met them.

i wouldn't stop listening to a band if they act like dicks... who doesn't from time to time?
however, if they were at complete odds with my personal beliefs, i'd have to think about that.

It totally depends on how they acted like a douche, and what it was about.
But I don't think I have yet.
nobody i've ever met has been a complete asshole.
ace enders was noticeably nice last summer. people have told me in the past he's a jerk but for being someone relatively successful he was very down to earth and approachable. i know that doesn't immediately qualify someone as a great person, but just the vibe i got from that dude was that he was a nice guy.
bryan czap from the dangerous summer was really kind when i talked to him. next time i see him i'd like to talk to him more.
leighton from lydia was also very nice. the first time i met him he kept apologizing for their van running into a deer the day before and the fact that they had to play acoustic and the whole band wasn't there, he genuinely felt bad, even after offering one of the coolest sets i've seen.

Johnn Craig - giant douche bag. hate the guy. Classic DGD is some of my favorite stuff though.
Kanye West - dude's a tool. Love his music.
Jared Leto - another tool. he loves himself to death. 30STM is a favorite band of mine.
What Brand New does to their fans can be seen as them being jerks, but I still love them.
so no, if someone's a douche it's not going to dictate whether or not i listen to or like their music. their music will decide that.

Nobody said you're a bad person for being a dick, or that bands are bad people if they're dicks on one day to one person. The question is, does it affect people's judgement? Which, for the most part, it does. If you were a dick to me at your job, it'd affect my judgement of you.

He just made a stupid fart noise in the mic and dropped it hard on the floor, then stormed off and probably went to go blog about it or something.
when i met craig on that tour he was the nicest dude ever

No Leto punching Elijah I agree with.

hey c'mon if you were coming out to australia for like 5-8 gigs for soundwave etc and were offered to tour with killswitch in America which is like ten times more concerts. what would you do. at least they're gonna come back an do a tour which they are gonna headline where you'll get to see more of them. with soundwave you'll get to see them for like 20 mins whereas if they do their own tour they'll do twice as much an it'll be worth so much more of your money than soundwave. give them a break!

great? he's really nothing special. i'll happily admit that i own and listen to his music, but he's a much better producer than he is lyricist. if you want to listen to a great rapper, go listen to blackalicious. the mc is gift of gab, and he probably is the greatest rapper of all time, even though he's humble enough not to rap about that. the only thing "great" about kanye is his ego, and not in the "fantastic" sense. this of course is my opinion but if you listen to blackalicious, i think you'll see where i'm coming from. if he wasn't such a little bitch half the time, i don't think i'd be reacting so strongly

That should be what's important.
its actually 5 massive festival shows and likely a few extras in select states.

aren't you also being "so quick to judge" them? Who's to say the other band wasn't pricks to them before the club opened? Who's to say they hadn't played with the other band before and had bad experiences? Who's to say they weren't just joking around and you didn't get it?
This is America. You have the right to tell a band they suck. It's especially commendable when you have the balls to do it to their face instead of waiting to get on the internet to talk shit.

I've been in a band, i actually am in one now. And i've played out of state so i know this feeling you talk about. Idiot no whiner possibly but i was jut posting my opinion on the thread.
as for being quick to judge im sorry but you are wrong. I arrived with the band (i was with their drummer) and the moment that we all got there the douching began. They had never played a show with this band before, nor was their any friendly joking.
I agree with your third statement. given this was a bad that i enjoyed in the first place i would most definitely still be listening to them. but i never enjoyed them.

Pity. You're really missing out on some awesome music.
I realize that, and I have heard it, and don't think it's that good that it justifies the way he acts. I just can't do it, dude needs to get over himself.

I don't think that should change how you feel about their music, but I can see how a douchey member can turn you off to a band.
Seeing All Time Low live made me like them a lot less.
That sucks about the PBC guy...I hope if I ever meet a blink guy he isn't mean! The PBC guy probably just caught him at a bad time.
why? i liked ATL more after i saw them live.

I wasn't calling you an idiot. I was calling the person who implied i'd never been in a band because I'm okay with trash talking an idiot. I can see how it'd be confusing with the multiquotes though.

You are being quick to judge though, even if I'm wrong about that certain situation, the point still stands that you don't understand the context that this event occurred in. At the point I met them, they were having problems with their label which was stressing them out. They could have been still dealing with that. I mean the point is that you don't really know them and like others have been pointing out, people have bad days and do stupid and/or mean things on them.
From my experience, the forced niceness that some people think is involved in playing shows or whatever is a lot more problematic than people being dicks.

I don't really care that he doesn't write his own music. He's a pop star, his job is to entertain people - and entertaining people is what he does.
Plus, you cannot deny that he is a VERY talented dancer. And singer. His songs are jams.
Yes, his job is to entertain people, which is why i recognize him as media icon. I'm not fond of his artistic side, which is what I feel is lacking. I've never been into his music because I feel like so many different hands were apart of it to truly call it his own music. If i wanted to listen to people with good voices in a similar genre that are far more artistically responsible for their own sound i'd listen to ne-yo or boyz ii men. Ya, hes a great dancer and a great singer, but what is a jam?

Didn't Oli pee on someone or something?
Thats what they say... He was tried for it and all that shit if im not mistaken, and thats why in one of the songs he said "And after everything you put me through, I shoulda fucking pissed on you". But yea I wasnt even taking that into consideration. He just feels he is too big

Not that I listened to him much before, but I refuse to listen to Chris Brown and can't believe anyone still does, or that TV / Radio still play him .. (well ... I CAN believe it - it's the world we live in). There are certain things that shouldn't be forgotten. I guess I was raised right..
Anyway, beyond that - I wouldn't stop listening to a band simply because I think they're idiots... For the main reason that I don't listen to bands because I think they're cool people. I've been fortunate enough to meet most of my idols and they've ALL seemed like genuinely nice people but I'm sure a lot of people I think are 'cool' are actually 'douches'. That being said, I've never seen enough of them to know if they are in fact nice, and the same goes for people saying 'oh I don't like him, he was mean to me'... people have off days, granted sometimes people are also dickheads... but be optimistic.
