I've just recently "rediscovered" what a great album Wilco's Summer Teeth is. To me, it's the perfect balance of experimentation and straight ahead catchy melodies. I like Wilco's other albums, too, but it seems that with some of their subsequent albums they either flirted with jam band territory or just seemed a bit less inspired.

To my ears, Summer Teeth recalls The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds -- easily one of my favorite albums of all time. In my opinion, Pet Sounds is the gold standard of a pop/rock band striking the perfect balance between charting new territory and retaining what made the group special to begin with.

Is anyone else a fan of either of these two albums? Are there any other albums from the last 10-15 years that you think were influenced by Pet Sounds? Right after typing that, I immediately thought of The Format's Dog Problems. Good stuff.

There's a Wilco thread in which you could have posted these thoughts. I'm sure it could stir up some discussion.

A lot of albums are influenced by Pet Sounds. It doesn't stand out to me as a primary influence on Summer Teeth but I see where you are coming from.

Pet Sounds has some serious dead spots. Like most Beach Boys records. But, damn, if "God Only Knows" isn't the most achingly beautiful song.

I have the Pet Sounds record buried somewhere in the closet. I love me some Beach Boys.

I like Pet Sounds. It's a great album. However, it's an incredibly unfair comparison when every pseudo-eccentric pop record is compared to Pet Sounds. It does a disservice to the record in question and, to a lesser extent, Pet Sounds itself. That isn't to say it didn't influence Summerteeth. I'm sure it did to an extent, but a very generalized extent.

That said, Summerteeth is my favorite Wilco album. I adore it. Admittedly, I only enjoy two Wilco records, but of the two (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot being the other, of course), it's my preferred LP.
