"In its current incarnation, Chapel Club was born in the summer of 2008 in the shadow of St. Luke’s Church, on London’s Old Street.

In the end, it took very little time for the defining elements of Chapel Club’s signature sound to take shape: heavy drama from the guitars, a rhythm section as tight as a hanged man’s gullet, melodic intricacies aplenty and a vocal that crooned and swooned its way through stories of lust, love and loss like a modern-day Jacques Brel.

“I dread that question, ‘Who do you sound like?’” says Lewis. “Not because it’s a bad question, it’s natural enough for someone to ask that. I’d just love to have a quick and accurate answer. But I can’t think of anyone we sound like, especially live. I end up reeling off influences from Deerhunter and New Order to the Bad Seeds, Scott Walker and Chet Baker – and leaving the person who asked more confused than they were to begin with.”

RIYL: Interpol, Lyrebirds, The Walkmen, The Smiths, The XX.

Love "Surfacing", takes the chorus of "Dream A Little Dream Of Me" and turns it into such an awesome brooding sound. Looking forward to hearing more tracks by these guys/eventually an album which I believe is scheduled for this year.

I booked tickets for the London date. You got more accustomed to the (slight) baritone?

The Hope's 18+ unfortunately, Bitz Kids got me in there but I'm not tight with Chapel Club so I reckon they'd be less likely to tell security I'm their cousin.

Yeah Baritone is less harsh, I can deal with it. Can't help thinking they give a touch too much groud to their influences, but they're not so bad.

Ah fair one, didn't realise that sorry mate.

And what do you mean about their influences?

I just feel like they're another brit indie band with super heavy influence from Joy Division, Smiths etc. followed by Interpol, 3rd gen I guess...I know they're very influential musicians and all, it's just when I can hear the influence on first listen that it kind of takes away from the direction and the personal style of their stuff. But they're only a young band and I know it often takes bands a couple records to find themselves a bit, they've got potential for sure. They need to get their stuff on Spotify so I can listen to them a bit more focused...ly? so I can make a decent judgement anyway.

Yeah I agree with that. I know what you mean for sure, yeah I've only heard like maximum four tracks by them so really want them to have the album out soon, guess I'll know soon enough from live shows etc. At the moment I'm loving it as they are clearly influenced by a bunch of bands that I adore and not following the huge wave of dance/electronic influenced alternative music that I'm hearing far too frequently over here nowadays, but it could wear thin over an album. No idea to tell yet, but for now, I'm really enjoying them and looking forward to the small live show.

Yeah, sure if I was majorly into those ones other than The Smiths I'd like it a lot as well. I guess I'm being a bit hypocritcal because I get annoyed when people say "oh, Gaslight are just a punk Bruce Springsteen" and I'm like "...and that's why you don't like them?" so yeah, not a very valid criticism but it's enough to put me off them a little bit. Keeping my eye on them though.

Yeah I know what you mean. I just dislike Gaslight because they don't push any buttons whatsoever for me. But yeah, I'll keep this updated for sure. Must say though I don't think these guys sound as close to the likes of The Smiths or Interpol as what I hear Gaslight Anthem to do Springsteen. I just put those RIYL: if you likes up there because I can hear tinges of them through and through and they are bands I happen to like which means others that like those may enjoy these guys. But, I wouldn't listen to them and say, "just a new Smiths, really". Where as, right or wrong, I don't know enough about them but it seems to be a pretty big portion of people, think Gaslight Anthem are trying to literally sound exactly like Springsteen in some way?

Oh didn't see the RIYL, I don't hear The XX in them much but the rest sound about right from what I've heard.

Yeah it's cool that it's not your thing but, separate from that I honestly don't think theyre trying to sound like him because from a lot of the interviews I've been hearing recently they're getting seriously pissed off with everyone comparing them to him. I wouldn't be surprised if the new album they're recording now doesn't go in a very different direction from him, hard rock sound is what I'm hearing. Also if you listen to their first album it really doesn't sound like him at all, more like the clash if anything(who are the singer's favourite band), it's just their breakthrough one The 59 sound that took a lot of influence from him.

Anyway, lets not turn this into a Gaslight thread. This band is good being fair, I prefer them to a lot of similar stuff to them.

Ah ok, yepyep. Like I said I wasn't getting defensive about it just I didn't know what the whole Springsteen/Gaslight thing was. That's cool.

Yeah look forward to hearing a lot more form these guys, they wanna hurry that up.

I forgot about this thread and this band for a while, the gig I went to was good. The venue was a dingy warehouse kind of room with bricks faling out of the walls and whatnot. Put on a good show although the crowd seemed to be full of journalists, photographers and people in the business, so all seemed a bit "still" which was odd. But I had a good time anyways and thought they put on a great show.

Album is taking too long which is making me forget about them, need to be able to judge them on more than a few songs.

New song "The Shore" can be downloaded from their website for free: http://www.chapelclub.com (http://www.chapelclub.com/)

Or you can listen to it below. It's probably my favourite thing they have done after a couple of mediocre songs that I heard. "Surfacing" and this are cool though:
