View Full Version : Deja Entendu vs. The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
musicaddicttt

Let me just say that I'm a bit confused here.
Brand New is an amazing band and have put together 4 amazing albums IMO. But I feel like everyone is so in love with The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me that they fail to recall the brilliance of Deja Entendu.
I will always regard Deja Entendu as the best album Brand New has put together, and I thought it was a commonly held belief until I become a member of this fine site. Even most "best albums of the decade" lists I've seen have had TDAGARIM on the list but never Deja Entendu.
I'm just curious if there are still people on here who agree with me, or if I'm the only one left. And why do people regard one as better than the other?

Deja Entendu is the only Brand New album that I really enjoy. It will always be one of my "classic" albums. I just can't get into their "darker" sound for some reason...it doesn't appeal to me.

Almost all of the staff lists 'of the decade' had Deja on them??? It defenitly gets plenty love on this website (and from me)

Deja was one of the first albums I really loved. I rec'd it to everyone who would hear me out. It still has some of my favorite Brand New songs ever (The Boy Who Blocked, Play Crack the Sky, Okay I Believe You, etc.). As my taste has progressed, I simply enjoy the songs on TDAG more now. Jesus, Degausser, You Won't Know, Limousine, Sowing Season, etc. appeal to me more now than Quiet Things and Guernica.

I think TDAG is BN's best album. But I'm definitely in the minority. Deja is typically regarded as their best effort.

01/21/10, 08:17 AM
All of Brand New's albums are completely different which makes it hard to compare them, I think. Deja is absolutely incredible, and is the first album I listened to by BN so it has a special place in my heart. TDAG is amazing though. But so are the other two in my opinion.
musicaddicttt
01/21/10, 08:18 AM
i think a lot of it maybe has to do with what you heard first
deja was one of the first albums i ever really heard that i not only liked, but i really appreciated and realized was a piece of art
though i do feel the same way about TDAG, it just doesn't have that classic appeal i guess...

It's not like Deja really gets a bad wrap. Maybe TDAG is just talked about more cause people are talking a lot about Daisy and it makes more sense to compare that to TDAG than to Deja?
I dunno. What's confusing? Why does anyone regard anything as better than something else? (Why isn't this in the Brand New official thread?)

deja is good if you think like thrice (no hate on them) is the most dynamic interesting band in the world and if you still need to get shuttled away from the taking back sundays of the world. how anyone can compare it to the devil is beyond me.

TDAG is more well-written and well-produced, it's the more technically impressive album. however, i definitely have a stronger connection to Deja. that was the album that made me truly love music, and i dont listen to it much these days, but when i do i still love it like i did 6 years ago.

The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me is far and away their best album. After that, it doesn't really matter.
Deja Entendu was 'Hey, let's write some good music.'

01/21/10, 02:31 PM
IMHO, TDAG is much "better", and by "better" i mean "better songwriting, better song structuring, better instrumentation, much more complex, a lot more technical, and more creative in its execution."
That being said, I still prefer to listen to deja at times. To each their own preference.

I'm just surprised so many people like TDAG over Deja....yeah of course my bias and opinion factor in but when i listened to Deja when it was released I thought it was one of the most complete albums i'd ever heard...
i expected to see most people on here being more divided or swaying towards Deja when I joined, but from what I've seen there has been a lot of pull towards TDAG...and most of the "best of the decade" lists (i have seen) have listed TDAG without mentioning Deja...which shocks me..

If there's something you would rather discuss, why would you even regard my opinion? Why purposely go out of your way to laugh at me for having an opinion instead of just ignoring me and letting it die? Does seeing something you've seen done before really fill you with such self-reighteousness?

I really don't feel like I got snide until other took it upon themselves to call my opinion laughable.
Either way, the simple schoolyard retort 'they started it' will suffice.
EDIT: I did comment on which I liked, but I felt the need to mention why TDAG did not meet my expectations. Not a one-way street type of thing, etc.

Right. Because you were being so constructive about it. I was laughing at the irony and the fact that I knew the guy you were quoting, not at the fact that you didn't like TDAG. While I have grown out of Brand New, currently (but possibly only temporarily) at the point where when I see an album cover, or a band members name, or a song title, I immediatly get disgusted...I still feel that 'TDAG...' is better. I don't even have to go past what Sophos said, but 'TDAG...' has more variety, texture, better flow, more powerful vocals and lyrics, etc.

I think The Devil and God is their best work (not by much tho) simply because the jump from Deja was such a massive progression for them as song writers, as well as the fact that its much more experimental than anything they had ever released. What totally blows me away is the people in this thread that are referring to Daisy as some piece garbage. Granted Daisy is so much different than any of their previous work, but Daisy is a brilliant album in my opinion.

I don't even have experience with either, but just from YT I can tell. Actually though, in October '08 I was supposed to see Brand New with Thrice and MeWithoutYou, but my friend's parents wouldn't let him since it was like a school night. But now that i'm not a fan of BN anymore, I doubt i'll get around to seeing them.

Oh no, I completely understand that you're amused by such a mediocre form of expression, and really the only reason I continue to return to reiterate why it's not a very good album is because I get 'haha'd (because it's far more intellectually stimulating than actually arguing why I'm wrong).
So because you think a record is boring, it's not a good record? Wut? Come up with a legitimate reason why it's a bad record and then we'll talk.

1. lacking in variety; tediously unvarying
That about says it all. Atmospherically, it's a step-up from Deja, but that atmosphere is so uniform to its counterparts that it's frankly boring to hear the album in its entirety. My quarrel is not that it is sad; It's that it's purposely giving off a negative sound just for the sake of seeming that way. It doesn't feel organic at all. And the boring, well, that's not true for the individual songs, which I find are actually quite nice -- as a whole, it's not a special album at all.

TDAG was written when several family members and friends of BN had passed away. It certainly wasn't a constructed emotion they were portraying in the album.

How can you say that when it's been said several times that when the band entered the studio, TDAG just poured out of them. They were actually feeling those feelings, they didn't make a record with those feelings for the sake of having a record with those feelings, they made a record with those feelings because that's actually how they felt.
Regardless of whether or not they had personal attachments, it doesn't sound organic. It seems like they forced themselves into darkness for no good reason. I wouldn't claim to be such a bright psychoanalyst. I'm sure many things came from the heart, but the way they portrayed those emotions is anything but natural for them.
Though I will admit Daisy is definitely a step far further in this direction, TDAG is the harbinger.

You do know that a bunch of people they knew died while they were writing TDAG, to the point where attending funerals became normal for them, and that "Limousine" is about a girl that was killed by a drunk driver they heard about, right? first 6 tracks of TDAG is easily the best thing this band has ever done. don't understand how any of tdag seems phoned in, i'd more likely believe that in their early work or even daisy. usually when someone describes something as montonous, it means they simply just don't like the sound in general, so you could just say that instead of dancing around it.

Haha...
My favourite album is TDAGARIM

Deja was good because it was both accessible and revolutionary for the band, although the latter description can be used for all their albums post-Your Favorite Weapon. With a band that continues to grow like them, I think in the end preference just comes down to personal liking rather than objective reasons.

Your Favorite Weapon is probly Brand News worst cd, but its still an excellent album. In comparison to the rest of their work its obviously very amateur sounding, but what do you expect from a band's first release? It was intended to appeal to a younger crowd, and at the time of its release that style of songwriting (tracks based on people's relationships) was extremely popular. Even though, with each album after YFW, they have vastly improved on their ability to write lyrics and compose songs, YFW is still a great album to go back and listen to.
Wait! You mean the band...progressed???
If you think progression is forcing yourself, then sure.

I am perfectly aware of all of that.
That still doesn't make the music feel real, especially since 'Hey I'm upset!' doesn't equate to 'Everything is in minor!'. It's almost like they took the dictionary definition of 'unhappiness' and stapled it onto their sound.

I totally agree--I feel that they have all grown tremendously as musicians; however, I also feel like the raw and genuine essence of their music has been lost. Granted, I'm sure they don't have the same attachments to much of their old material circa Deja and Weapon---but in my opinion, that's when they were at their best.
and I also feel like with Daisy.. they're starting to really enjoy their music again... that's if Jesse doesn't forget his big boy pants this time around
