Renae - ...And Hell Follows
Record Label: Hotfoot Records
Release Date: December 7, 2009
Hotfoot Records has recently picked up another winning act. That act being central Illinois' Renae. Following their release The Coward, the Storm, the Outlaw and selling over 4,000 copies with no assistance from a label, comes …and Hell Follows. It's a five song EP that will leave you, not only wanting more, but satisfied that someone took great musical influences and applied it to the indie-hardcore scene.
The songs play out like a short concept album. And with the idea of a concept album comes to mind several well known bands. However, instead of sounding androgynous like a particular major-label, concept-album-crazy band, they sound like everyone's favorite indie-rock story-tellers, the Receiving End of Sirens. Well, they'd sound like them if TREOS condensed their songs to three minutes or less. More than that, frontman Stephen Rosborough sounds strikingly similar to Casey Crescenzo, to the point that one would think Crescenzo had a falling out with his own band and started a newer project. The only give away, once again, is that the songs run about one-third the length of any of the Dear Hunter/TREOS songs.
Renae also pulls influence from bands like At the Drive-In and Poison the Well. A bit of a far cry from their first EP which tended to be on the more pop-driven side, often with an appeal to emo-audiences…whoever they may be, now that the label has been completely diluted from it's origins. That aside, there is also a very notable Cave In influence in the music as well: Very atmospheric sounds and hypnotic beats, a treat for anyone who likes great music and thinks today's music scene needs to take a few notes from it's predecessors.
So if you're looking for a great EP that draws influence from artists you miss, be sure to check out Hotfoot Record's Renae: …and Hell Follows.
