Saetia vs La Dispute

Hey. So, these are two of my favorite bands, but all my skramz purist friends bitch and say that La Dispute is copying Saetia. All my post-hardcore friends with their flannels and boat shoes and keys on their caribbeaners attached to their skinny jeans think that Saetia started the melodic instrumental-spoken screamed vocal style of emo, but that La Dispute did it better.

I don't really know what to think. I understand that Saetia pioneered the sound, but I think that La Dispute does it maybe a little better. I like Brad's vocals in La Dispute, and I love his story-like poetic lyrics. The instrumental section is also much more progressive. Arguably more talented. I love Saetia's rawness too. I love how Billy's scream sounds a strangled muppet having an anxiety attack at 120 mph. Werner's lyrics are much more depressing and poetic though. "There is no happy here."

So, I don't know. I like to think of La Dispute as a neo-Saetia. Doing everything that wasn't around yet back when Saetia was hitting it up.

What do you think? Is La Dispute better than Saetia? Is Saetia better than La Dispute? Did Saetia do it first, but La Dispute do it better? I'm stuck in the middle. Sway me with your opinions.

The idea that you're using such a subjective interpretation of the work to argue that one band's lyrics are superior to another band's similar set of lyrics doesn't make sense.

You can claim there's sincerity in a line like "There's no happy here" but you can't prove it, and even taking sincerity out of the equation, it's still a stupid lyric, regardless of how honest it is.

Well first of all dude, Saetia pioneered a "kind" of "real screamo." Think of all the screamo bands that came around in the 90's. There was Heroin, Swing Kids and Angel Hair that were doing their thing in San Diego. Around the same time, There was Indian Summer and Mohinder in Oakland playing "screamo." This didn't sound anything like the San Diego screamo. Cap'n Jazz showed up somewhere too. They call Cap'n Jazz emo, but compare them to Don Martin Three, Rites Of Spring, and Saetia. None of these dudes sound anything alike. They're all (scr)e(a)mo, but very distinctly different. Chances are none of these bands were closely affiliated with each other. For the most part (excluding a lot of the Don Martin Three-esque Bay Area bands and guys like Quest Of Quintana Roo and The Goddamn Dulge) none of these guys did the same thing and probably weren't aware the other bands were doing it either. Then the late ninteys came around and guys like Jeromes Dream, Orchid, Usurp Synapse, pg99 came around with something that sounded nothing like these earlier guys either! I'd say that THAT screamo sound was pioneered by the experimental grindcore/emo band Hinckley in like 1990, but still. If that was screamo, what was the rest of it?

Saetia pioneered their own kind of screamo, while lots of other bands pioneered another kind. There's no black and white here.

As for liking la dispute. I like them, a lot. But the argument going on here is that both La Dispute and Saetia are worth a shit to the history of their respective genres. This is not the case at all. La Dispute puts on a great show, and are solid songwriters. Definitely not groundbreaking. Neither was Saetia, nor were they important. The only thing we wouldn't have, had Saetia never existed, are all the really lame "Saetia reunion" joke blogs.

I'm not going to say "you'll grow out of it" because I didn't, and I have friends who are almost thirty who still haven't.

I've just noticed that in whatever this genre is called, there's two different types of bands: the super pretentious fake political/whiney ones and everyone else. There's a lot of earnest people in that scene who put out good records but then you have bands that are essentially jokes yet pretentious scene kids like Sigur Ros act as if they're musical messiahs. Like anyone else, when I first got into it, I bought some of their bs, but the longer I listened to it, the easier it became for me to separate the genuine from the fake elitist boringness.

If you want to like what I write off as bullshit, cool. I just don't think being angsty about it like the illustrious Sigur Ros is does anything to disprove my opinion about many of those who take part in that scene. Almost anyone you talk to who's been involved in that scene for awhile will have stories about people like that. It's annoying and just not worth it.

Well first of all dude, Saetia pioneered a "kind" of "real screamo." Think of all the screamo bands that came around in the 90's. There was Heroin, Swing Kids and Angel Hair that were doing their thing in San Diego. Around the same time, There was Indian Summer and Mohinder in Oakland playing "screamo." This didn't sound anything like the San Diego screamo. Cap'n Jazz showed up somewhere too. They call Cap'n Jazz emo, but compare them to Don Martin Three, Rites Of Spring, and Saetia. None of these dudes sound anything alike. They're all (scr)e(a)mo, but very distinctly different. Chances are none of these bands were closely affiliated with each other. For the most part (excluding a lot of the Don Martin Three-esque Bay Area bands and guys like Quest Of Quintana Roo and The Goddamn Dulge) none of these guys did the same thing and probably weren't aware the other bands were doing it either. Then the late ninteys came around and guys like Jeromes Dream, Orchid, Usurp Synapse, pg99 came around with something that sounded nothing like these earlier guys either! I'd say that THAT screamo sound was pioneered by the experimental grindcore/emo band Hinckley in like 1990, but still. If that was screamo, what was the rest of it?

Saetia pioneered their own kind of screamo, while lots of other bands pioneered another kind. There's no black and white here.

People always think that the original (even though there's a lot of dispute about Seatia being "original" on here) is better than the current. I kinda wanted to see what people think about that in this case.



Well first of all dude, Saetia pioneered a "kind" of "real screamo." Think of all the screamo bands that came around in the 90's. There was Heroin, Swing Kids and Angel Hair that were doing their thing in San Diego. Around the same time, There was Indian Summer and Mohinder in Oakland playing "screamo." This didn't sound anything like the San Diego screamo. Cap'n Jazz showed up somewhere too. They call Cap'n Jazz emo, but compare them to Don Martin Three, Rites Of Spring, and Saetia. None of these dudes sound anything alike. They're all (scr)e(a)mo, but very distinctly different. Chances are none of these bands were closely affiliated with each other. For the most part (excluding a lot of the Don Martin Three-esque Bay Area bands and guys like Quest Of Quintana Roo and The Goddamn Dulge) none of these guys did the same thing and probably weren't aware the other bands were doing it either. Then the late ninteys came around and guys like Jeromes Dream, Orchid, Usurp Synapse, pg99 came around with something that sounded nothing like these earlier guys either! I'd say that THAT screamo sound was pioneered by the experimental grindcore/emo band Hinckley in like 1990, but still. If that was screamo, what was the rest of it?

Saetia pioneered their own kind of screamo, while lots of other bands pioneered another kind. There's no black and white here.

Honestly, why don't more AP.net users dig shoegaze? It's noisy (Brand New) and uses delay (Circa Survive, most scene bands that used to rely on distortion but then evolved into a band that's clearly more respectable, since you can't mosh to it anymore, or something like that).

Lol, this is possibly because I haven't been too observant, but why does every user always act like they're above the "average AP user" or think that their music tastes are better? I see a lot more regulars with good music tastes post than any of these absent "All Time Low worshipping members" people keep mentioning. Or maybe I just refuse to read through crappy threads. Either way, it seems a bit condescending.

These bands never hold my attention. Listen to (newer) trophy scars instead. Not really the same genre but somewhat similar

Saetia is a good band, but this isnt even close for me. La Dispute > Saetia (by a landslide).
