I really don't like it D: "ohai, monophonic synths probably done on logicpro +glide + autotune lol". Nooooot my kinda thing.
Someone that I know (who I don't really like) happened to cover this song. Using autotune the whole way through. And singing out of tune. I pitied his life.

Obviously you dont like Death Cab or Postal Service, so your bias, therefore your opinion doesnt count. Like i said, the lyrical content is different, i've never dispute that. But the music is exactly the same. Obviously he was ONLY influenced by Ben Gibbard.

Sorry for the emo fuck thing, but no those are not the only two bands. Thats not my particular taste in music but i've listenend to these bands:

Believe or not, I'm actually a big fan of both of Ben's big projects and have probably listened to his records more times then you could count. Also, apparently you must never of heard of Imogen Heap, Boards of Canada, or Armin van Bruuren, whom the guy has mentioned as influences to his music. I guess he completely ripped them off too huh? You know what, The Postal Service invented electronic music, everyone in the history of electronic music has ripped off TPS, TPS is the only original artist out there, anyone similar is a ripoff.

Oh that's right, because The Postal Service invented electronic music. There is no such thing as similarities, just ripoffs of the only original electronic artist in the history of music. Daft Punk? Ripped off the Postal Service. Kraftwerk? Ripped off The Postal Service. Gary Numan? Ripped off The Postal Service. Girl Talk? Totally ripped off The Postal Service. Hell, the Wikipedia article for electronic music should just say," The Postal Service invented electronic music, everyone else is a poser and a ripoff".

I wouldn't call Owl City necessarily a 'rip off' of The Postal Service but I just sort of wish more people knew about The Postal Service as an influence. Just because some kids who listen to Owl City on the radio or something love it because of its pop accessibility etc etc but I feel like if they knew about The Postal Service they'd love them too.
Edit: That probably makes no sense.. I don't really know how to explain it. This is from one of the articles:
In an interview with EW, Adam Young (aka laptop sensation Owl City) admits his no. 1 single "Fireflies" and the Postal Service in general "are pretty similar," but at the same time claims he's "a lot more of a Death Cab fan." For example, he'd only heard Give Up "a little bit" before people started pointing out the pilfering:
I've become more of a fan having started Owl City, actually. I had some friends in high school that would have it playing in their cars and stuff. It was cool, but it never really caught my ear. It's kind of ironic, looking back at it, because a lot of people do relate the two projects. I can totally see it now, but I didn't really then, for what it's worth. It's worth a lot, now that you've sold over 100,000 fireflies. There's more. In the form of an unintentional punchline. (Speaking of which, yes, that's real merch pictured above. Real sad merch.)
Via EW (http://music-mix.ew.com/2009/10/30/owl-city-fireflies-interview/):
EW: A lot of people wish they would put out another album. Is that something you would look forward to hearing?
ADAM YOUNG: I think [Give Up] left everyone asking, "What are they going to do next?" Since no one has done anything quite like it, it's almost like everyone is naturally saying this is the next step -- maybe that's me, maybe that's this record.

I don't think any music can give people good judgment.
I don't really know how to explain it.. like if they listened to other music where the majority of the fans didn't dress like that maybe they would realize or not feel compelled to dress like that. Or maybe if they listened to The Postal Service it would sort of expand their outlook and seek out other music besides the niche of bands that have a fanbase similiar to those 3 girls in the photo. (Not saying everyone who listens to Owl City looks like that, because obviously they don't, and I'm not saying everyone who listens to them has bad judgment either because they don't)

alright well I listened to owl city for a little while, dont care for him at all anymore. BUT, the guy is talented, he has an amazing ear for harmony, and believe it or not, thats not something everyone is born with. Ive seen people compose shitty music first hand, just because they cant blend music together. And as far as the lyrics, the GUY IS EXTREMELY METAPHORICAL, thats why alot of people I think dont grasp the message behind his words. I dont listen to him anymore, but I was able to tell hes not as shallow of an artist as people think he is.

The Postal Service. A happy Postal Service actually.
It was a sad sad day.

Hmmmm...
Explain how. Seriously tell me just how that guy who writes super sappy, childish songs ripped off an act that was about depression and breakups and fat Ben Gibbard crying himself to sleep at night with razor blades on his dresser, detail by detail.
Dude..have you ever listened to Give Up? It's not a particularly depressing album, at all. Most of the songs on the record are pretty hopeful and fun ("Clark Gable", "Such Great Heights", "Brand New Colony", "Sleeping In", "We Will Become Silhouettes", etc.). You are seriously mischaracterizing the content of Gibbard's lyrics. I don't know if I would say that Owl City are that derivative of the Postal Service, but I can still hear the influence.
owl city is ok. but lights sounds like britney spears? issit me only?

I liked Owl City back in 07 and 08 but if you really listen to it his lyrical content changed on the newest album and he got famous way too fast and now doesn't know what to do. Don't get me wrong i'm all for bands gaining fame but not the way that he is. I'm talking stricly about sold out shows filled with 12 year olds that only know fireflies and occasionally some other recent stuff and uh Kids Bop. REALLY?

Agreed, I used to adore Swimming With Dolphins/Owl City a year or two ago and I still enjoy listening to his older stuff. I guess I've just grown and expanded musically since and I find his newer stuff extremely bland, not to mention his shows are snore-fests.

You're a complete idiot.

Haha. I mean, if you're going to love Owl City (like I do) just don't pretend he all of a sudden started writing silly lyrics now. That's like hating Fearless because "man all those songs are about boyfriends who cheat on her. She never wrote songs like that before."

So true. Nothing wrong with liking this kind of music, but it's ridiculous when people make absurd statements like that to be cool or something. "Oh, I liked Owl City before 'Fireflies.'"

they play "fireflies" at my work every single fucking day, and i really was shocked at the unbelievable vapidity of some of his lyrics; is he a 13 year-old girl? i mean:
"i'd get 1,000 hugs from 10,000 lightning bugs"
are you fucking kidding me?

Just because I liked him doesn't mean I like every single song he put out. I don't even know what the fuck he was on to sing a song about panda bears. I mean songs like the one where he talks about going to the dentist for the entire god damn song. Sooooo different from something like Saltwater Room and Fuzzy Blue Lights. All i'm saying is he didn't even have a fucking wikipedia page back in May of 09 now all of the sudden because of Fireflies being a free itunes download and getting a twitter mention from Taylor Swift he alienates his original fanbase.

If you're alienated now, you're an idiot. He's writing songs that are similary themed and stylistically similar and maintains the exact same public persona he always has.
People just pretend there's anything different other than the fact that people know who he is now. I'm done arguing with someone who's deluding themselves. It's pointless.
