I was reading DP's explanation about "Vices" on their Myspace page and the singer Brandon says
"When we're talking about the best records of all time, I'm definitely a dude that's going to talk about Led Zeppelin before I'm talking about Refused," proclaims Dead Poetic singer Brandon Rike.
My question is, why is he giving so much props to Zeppelin and downplaying the Refused when the "Refused sound" is what got their band to this point of success in the first place? I didn't hear and Zeppelin on Four Wall Blackmail or New Medicines. This isn't an angry question, I DO like DP, but this quote irked the shit outta me.

good question, but i think he meant that the mainstream rock world would see zeppelin way before they would see refused when they think about great records. and i think thats a fairly accurate statement, you could be surrounded by just the radio, hear zeppelin, and say: "yea, thats a great record." you have to dig a little bit further into your own musical journey in order to find refused. i'm not downplaying refused, but i do think that a band like dead poetic really wants to break into the mainstream now. so i think that might have been the aim of his statement, not to forget where they got their start though.

why do they (and other bands) feel such a great need to "move away" from the genre they started in? They had great screams and now it sounds like those are going away. Do they think they are going to alienate fans with a new sound?

AGREED!! That's some rock star shit to say! They wanna distance themselves from that style that created them in the first place. Just because its not "cool or hot" now and they're just going to say "we are growing as artist and need to go in different directions!
I too am a DP fan....but those new songs are weak and forgettable at best :(

Awesome, way to be a huge asshole. Christ, what even prompted you to make a comment like that?
Anyway, I too wonder what made DP just think "oh yeah, less screams, more rock!!", because I absolutely love New Medicines, but this stuff is pretty different.

1.) i honestly think that new medicines was a better album than 4 walls blackmail.....so how is the new album gonna compare to the previous two?
2.) not to be a dick....but why does the vocalist sound like shit live?

I was at the first show on this tour, and to be honest I thought their new stuff was good. Of course EVERYONE there wanted to hear their old stuff. They played an equal number of new and old songs so most people stuck around. Overall most of the people who knew their old stuff, dissed their new stuff - save a few. But the people who really didn't know their old stuff (maybe they were hearing them for the first time) liked both their new stuff and their old stuff, so I think they will def. gain a lot of fans. To me there is not that big of a difference between the old and new DP live. They are just as passionate, just minus the screaming....they do have two of the best sounding screams though, and that will be missed!!!

I'll second that one.
And: Is your new song up on Purevolume representative of all the tracks on Vices? Is this the new direction you're headed in, or is it largely different to the rest of the CD?

well lucky you.....the vocalist seriously sounded horrible the three times that i saw him.....if you heard him at the shows that i was at you really would agree with me. and it wasnt the venues fault you could tell........now i am jelous that every one besides me has heard the lead singer sing good live.

i'm not a huge fan. the music is pretty good... but i don't like the vocalists singing voice. his scream is good, but his singing sounds really whiny live to me.

im with the people that say he's good live. I thought he was very good. and he even kept contact with the tech crew the whole set making sure that one instrument or mic wasnt too loud or too soft

they've already answered that question in like 3 other interviews (one being this months HM > so check that out if you wanna know why) - but seriously, that's a fairly obvious answer anyways ... people grow and mature and over the coarse of 5 or 6 years. they want to change things. almost 2 years ago, this band didnt even exist, i think its safe to say they HAD to change some things in order to be where they are now . and as for all the people that are already talking about how bad the new stuf is ...., please wait until you hear the whole album before you start trash talking, i'm sure if you give it a chance, you will see that it is an amazing cd . they are finally playing the music they've always wanted to play and i think everyone should be happy for them. now.. if on October 31st you go out and buy the cd (or download it like i'm sure many of you will...) and you still dont like it, then ok , i'll listen to your opinions and views on the album .. .but all any of you have heard is one full song and 3 demos so give it a rest already with the trash talking,, save it for November 1st if you want. they've worked really hard on this new stuf and its not fair for some of you to shoot it down before you've given it a chance. they know that the majority of their fans that are in love with New Medicines still really dig that whole "screamo" scene and thats what their trying to change. the audience that will get into this new stuf is mainyl adults..... but i hope to god all those fans that are stuck up Fall Out Boy's and Senses Fail's and Silverstein's asses will bring thier head's out long enough to get a breath of fresh air in the [loosly put] ROCK world. this new Dead Poetic cd is ROCK! ... its freakin ballzy and will bring some people new hope in music --- IF... you give it a chance.
[ now as for my question, ... i just want to simply ask them to give an explanation to all the fans (and all fans of "christian" music) that get their panties up in a wod just because their favorite [supposedly christian] artists drinks a beer at a show or smokes. a lot of bands don't have time to get into this on an individual level , but i think that subject (more than any) should be addressed so people will maybe stop thinking of these muscicians as saviors and start thinking of them as regular people and maybe realize that they are more mature than the average 13 or 14 year old christian girl or boy . i think its outrageous for kids and their parents to make such a huge deal about seeing these artists drinking and smoking and i think it would be cool for a musician to explain to all their fans exactly what they can expect from them so they wont get freakin 20 people come up to them after every show and complain to them that they saw them (shall i say) drink a beer or smoke a damn ciggarette. thanks.

o and i apologize for getting off subject, ,i dont think i ever even answered your question directly ... here goes:
"cause that genre sucks now... i can go on myspace and purevolume and do a search for all these bands in that genre and look for influences like FallOutBoy and Senses Fail and you'll find LITERALLY 1000's of bands trying to do the exact same thing.,.. i dont have to tell you that gets old quickly... now, you know if DP wanted to ,, they could put out a record that would probably go gold if they had the right label behind it and stuf, ,but that's not what they want to do ,, the reason (i imagine) they chose to write a record around their 90's influences is becuase that was the last legitimate era of REAL rock music. [don't dispute me! haha] but seriously ., you think about it .,. does FallOutBoy have the same charisma as bands like Nirvana, STP, HELMET, Smashing Pumpkins and Bush? and will they be around longer than either of those? the answer is NO , ... i think in DP's case, they arent trying to compare themselves to those bands, they are simply saying that they look up to them and realize they that the music scene of today [simply put] SUCKS! -- so please do us all a favor and quit asking stupid questions that you already knwo the answers too."
p.s. i dont mean to offend anyone so i'm sorry if i did, but you have to understand, i've heard brandon and like 10 other bands that are actually trying to do something "different" explain their reasons like 6 times and its not fair for them to have to waste their time when there's other valuable questions they could be spending their time answering. thansk
