Sort of surprised there isn't a thread for this already.

I've read Ender's Game, Ender's Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind. I picked up Ender in Exile from the library today. Hopefully it won't matter that I'm reading it before I read Shadow Puppets and Shadow of the Giant.

It's saddening that the Ender's Game/Ender's Shadow movie was dropped, but for some reason I think that was for the best. I don't think the series would translate well onto the big screen.

Anyway, I'm sure I'm not the only one on this site who's read at least Ender's Game. Discuss. (And use spoiler tags.)

NOOO!!!! DON'T READ ENDER IN EXILE FIRST!!!!

Yes it does matter. Ender in Exile deals with a loose end from Shadow of the Giant.

Oh, and I love this series to death and have read every book at least three times. :D I get in additive habits where I read each book in 2-3 days, and finish the series in about a month or so.

Ender In Exile seems to belong more with the Shadow series in its style.

just finished Shadow Puppets.

i like the Ender series more by a slight margin because it was more science fiction and, i think, had stronger and more intriguing characterization. with the Ender series, though, i could easily pick my favorites (Speaker and Children), whereas with the Shadow series, i can't pick a favorite because it's so consistent.

Ender's Game/Ender's Shadow are two of my favourite books. I haven't read the continuation of the Ender story for ages, but I quite liked Shadow of the Hegemon and Shadow Puppets. I haven't read Shadow of the Giant yet, I don't know if I ever will.

My favourite part of the series was how the Shadow series expanded on the rest of Ender's team ('jeesh' or whatever it was called). I'm a big fan of stories with a strong supporting cast of characters. It was nice to see how and where they all ended up.

You seem like a good person to ask although anybody can answer this.

I just finished Ender's Game and it was incredible. Now I need to know what order I should read the others in. Should I read the parallel series as I continue along in the original series? Or should I read all of the Ender series before reading the Shadow series? Also Ender's Exile confuses me since I don't know where it fits in.

If I don't get a response on here in a couple days I'll probably just make another thread for this to get some more views.

my guess is there are two ways to go about it: by chronological order or by publication date. i went by publication date. other than ender's game/ender's shadow, i'm pretty sure the parallel series don't have much to do with each other anyway except until ender in exile, which i haven't read yet.

The order I would HEAVILY suggest is:

Ender's Game
Ender's Shadow (with an optional 'the war of gifts' novella and 'first meetings in the enderverse' short stories before or after this for extra stuff from this period)
The three remaining shadow series books
Ender in exile (uses a character from the shadow series that you have to have already seen by reading them, but connects Ender to speaker)
Speaker
Xenocide
Children of the Mind

Honestly, when I first read Ender's Game, I tried to do the Ender series only and kinda fizzled out around Xenocide. I found that my second time going through it, reading the Shadow series first made it much better, especially with all of the material they have on Peter. It's also a much more action oriented story to the philisophical Ender's series. I read the series through in this order twice now (years apart). It's pretty fantastic.

I would really say to read the Shadow series first. It makes more sense, storyline wise, reading what happens on earth for all the times they will refer back to it (instead of reading what happens 3000 years in the future, THEN reading what happens to earth, THEN reading Ender in Exile.)

Psh, I was there for a true legends final year with Bobby Bowden. You just saw a fizzle in a pan with Tebow, who will quickly fail in the pro's for sucking so much. Seriously, who throws like that and can't take the ball over center?

Besides, we have Ponder. Your guys will be done when we play in Tally this year. Best prepare yourself now.

Lol, not to turn this thread into a football discussion but...the best college football player ever is hardly a fizzle in a pan. Plus, he changed his throwing motion and the Broncos are already impressed with him, he's moving up the depth chart. AND, we have John Brantley now, who broke Tebow's high school records and was way more coveted of a recruit than Ponder coming out of high school. Not to mention that we have the best defense in the nation. I'm going to be in Tallahassee for that game, to watch the Gators win their 7th straight!

He was in no way the best college football player ever. That would go to the only man who actually WON two heisman's. Just because ESPN rides tebow's dick doesn't mean he's the greatest ever. He's a cry baby, too. I mean, who cries for losing football? And for playing your last game at home (THREE TIMES). And for losing again. Seriously. He cries too much.

As for this new throwing motion, let's wait until Ray Lewis hit the shit out of him once. Then he'll get scared and revert to his old throwing style as everyone continues to destroy him and get interceptions. It'll happen. And no, you will not win the 7th straight, who cares what the recruit was coming out of high school, Ponder put up better numbers than Tebow, we just had no defense so we kept losing. Now that's fixed with our new coaching staff. You are done.

Ponder put up lots of yards but didn't have the touchdowns to match. Look at Tebow's throwing numbers in his sophomore season...Ponder never came close to those. His last two seasons they became more of a running team. He should have won the Hesiman his junior year as well. He led the Gators to seven straight wins in the regular season and none were even close....including five SEC teams and FSU. Anyway, we have the best defense in the nation and our offense will still be strong. Stronger than your defense, anyway. You can't really say that you're confident Ponder will be able to move the ball so well - his numbers came against ACC teams with bad defenses, including 300+ yards in a joke of a game against Miami.

And yeah, Tebow cries but honestly we could use a little more passion in the game. He's a once in a lifetime player. He cries but that same passion is what pushed him to 53 touchdowns in his sophomore year, a national championship in his junior year, and a hell of a run in his senior year where the offensive coordinator basically wrecked the team himself.

finally read Shadow of the Giant. finished it in about a day. wow. some pretty powerful stuff in there. i almost teared up at some points, especially the end. after his unpleasant portrayal in Ender's Game, which sort of carried into Shadow of the Hegemon and Shadow Puppets, who would've thought Peter would become one of my favorite characters. and OSC made Virlomi to be such a hateable bitch throughout most of the novel, only to have me do a 180 and love her in one single event. and then, of course, Bean and Petra's storyline... so tragic.

going to pick up Ender in Exile hopefully by tomorrow. also, hopefully Shadows in Flight, which is supposedly going to connect Shadow of the Giant and Children of the Mind, will be finished soon, as Shadow of the Giant left a few dangling storylines.

Agreed. Shadow of the Giant is heartbreaking. The only thing that rivals it is Ender's wife giving him permission to die in Children. I can't wait for Shadows in Flight, which is supposed to connect the Shadow series to the Ender series.

And yes, Peter is the best character in the series. I loved him in Ender's Game. He was written so uniquely, with the 'hatred' shown as his main trait, yet having the brotherly love scene when he thought Ender was sleeping. Then the Shadow series and his semi-return as Ender-Peter in Xenocide solidify him as my favorite character.

A news article from September, 2010, naming Gavin Hood (X-men Origins: Wolverine) as the screenwriter/director. Apparently he has a script done. This may actually happen! I hope it's a mix of Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow, with Bean getting significant screen time. Although, I expect the ages of the kids to be upped from the book, so that it is able to work.

oh yes. Novinha is probably tied with Bean for most tragic character. and Peter tied with Jane for most interesting. and then Virlomi and Qing-Jao for most polarizing. there are just so many great characters in this series that it's hard to really choose one favorite.

hm. i heard Wolverine was a horrible movie.

people commenting on the article say it should be either motion capture or cgi to solve the child-actor dilemma. i think i read somewhere else that maybe it should even be animated, seeing as how the Marvel comic adaptions were sort of successful (i never heard of them until i read that article).

i remember reading that OSC wrote the first script, and that it combined Game and Shadow. don't know of Hood will do the same, but i'm sure, as another commenter said, the movie wouldn't get made without OSC's approval.

also, it would be interesting to see which sequel they pursue first. have Bean and the rest of the Jeesh grow up naturally in the Shadow series before going to Speaker? that would probably make the most sense, unless they're using CGI or animation or whatever, in which case either road would work.

i guess you're right. i just thought the way her storyline ended was horrible, and i wondered if what happened to her was really all that justified. so it didn't exactly reach the point of likable, it was more close to pity, which once i finished reading Xenocide i realized i wouldn't have felt at all if i really loathed her.

WTG
11/18/10, 10:58 PM
It is sad how her character turns out, but by that point, the character was so unlikable, it wasn't as big of a pity factor. It is an awful ending for someone though.

I really don't know how I feel about a movie. It could be amazing, as these books are my favorite piece of fiction out there, novels, tv, or movies. However, if not executed correctly, it could bomb. I wouldn't hold my breath for sequels though...it would most likely be a one-shot movie. How awesome would it be if they went all "Lord of the Rings" and it became a breakaway movie series hit though!

from the source material, it could very well be the next Harry Potter, but with LOTR quality the entire way through. i agree, it all depends on the execution. ten movies would take a long time, though, and if they were to shoot for any sort of consistency, they'd have to have the same screenwriter/director combo attached to each and every one of them, and OSC in the background the entire time. the entire project could take two decades.

WTG
11/18/10, 11:51 PM
In a perfect world, Enders Game/Enders Shadow would be a close to 3 hour long epic. Then, for the sequels, they would release them over the next three years, one shadow and one ender each year, so that both series were being done at once. This could lead to a union with Shadows in Flight (if it ever gets released in book form, of course). Obviously Ender in Exile wouldn't be a movie, but that doesn't feel like part of the core series anyway. It's more like the War of Gifts, a nice one shot to add more to the overall story.

i'm not sure if it'll be his script, but i'm hoping he'll either stop them or steer them in the right direction if they're making a The Last Airbender.

Don't know how an Ender's Game movie could ever work, and I'm not sure I actually want to see one. I doubt there are many child actors who are capable of playing a part from the series; but if they up the age of the characters, the story would lose a lot of its power.

i was feeling more anticipation towards the casting of Bean than the titular role. haven't seen Aramis Knight in anything, nor have i seen any of the other actors i've linked to, so i don't know what to think.

Harrison Ford? YES!

Is the script just going to be of Ender's Game, or a mix of both?

last i remember, card intended for it to be a mix. not sure what the new script is like, though. i hope it's a mix, if only because i think bean is a better character than ender (even though i consider the speaker series better than the shadow series).

your thread probably got merged into mine because mine was made first and having two threads on the same subject would be redundant.

Just read Ender's Game. It was fantastic. Now... to finish Ishmael or track down the next book in the Ender series... hmm

i want more news about the movie. a trailer soon would be nice. or a teaser? maybe a poster. at least a status update.

edit: it probably is way to early to expect any of those things, but still. i want this movie so bad.

the movie is filming right now, If I heard correctly. I'd be surprised if we see a trailer any time in the next month or two.

"It took us all a second to realize Asa was right when he said Ender's Game was an amazing book from "the late 1900s." We use that phrase all the time now, like, "Clinton was President in the late nineteen hundreds!" Most of us read Ender's Game when we were young and wondered when it would become a movie. We never dreamed then that we would all be part of the team to bring it to the screen, nor did we realize the novel's description of our world would be so prescient that its vision would still be unfolding before our very eyes today. And now, watching Asa bring a character to life who has been on our minds since our youth, we realize things happen for a reason. We were waiting for him. Make yourself comfortable, Ender!"
