View Full Version : Doyle and the Fourfathers (Official Thread)

William Doyle's full-band project, and likely the way he'll be attempting to pursue his music career from here on. he's made a turn from the noise-pop on his solo album Born In The USB into a more conventional and more powerfully melody-driven sound influenced by the likes of classics like Scott Walker and The Smiths, modern-day indie-pop sensations like The Decemberists, and a resurrected connection to his britpop roots, particularly Pulp and Jarvis Cocker's persona/character. his current music is almost a conglomerate culmination of pop and every sense of the word as it has progressed over the past 50 or so years, as has been his passion throughout the latter half of 2009, and amidst the strong melodic overtones and catchy nature, he has found plenty of room for sound compositions and luscious arrangements for a rare and precociously well-rounded pop sound.
there's no clear plans for an album at the moment, but hes currently in the process of recording and producing several singles in his studio. here are some clips from a recent performance -- his band is already precise and refined in my opinion:

Isn't this bump a bit premature? Also, isn't that blob of live videos a bit much? Maybe you should have posted one video and links to the others or something. It just looks a bit cluttered, but maybe that's just me. Regardless...
I haven't listened to Born in the USB all that much, but I'll certainly check out whatever he releases this year.

The Fourfathers material is excellent britpop. I've only heard two of their demos so far but they've both been great. Can't wait for some proper releases.

haha, eh, i figured i'd be creative and make this almost like the members of the music forum were finding out about will's band by seeing them perform a set at a local gig, especially since they don't have any prominent releases yet. this bump would be premature in most cases but will is actually more interested right now in releasing singles than albums -- that is his current focus, so to post scattered songs that won't be on an actual album for awhile (or possibly not ever) is not so premature as it seems.
anyway, you should listen to those, for realz. guarantee you'll be impressed at least by a couple of them.

By "premature bump," I meant that you posted your "bu[...]ump" comment a bit early. Don't people usually wait a day or two before they bump something? Oh well, lol.
How will he be releasing singles? Free? iTunes?

probably both.

lol you're missing the point! watch them from top to bottom, immerse yourself in the atmosphere of being at the show, like you're finding out about some local band you'd only heard of before now!
megan and i did so and trust me you won't regret it. that might have been a better way to get into his new material than hearing it on an album, i must say -- seeing all the character and energy was great, and they replicate quite a full atmosphere live, does the soundscape excellent justice.
all that said, if you still insist on only checking out one or two, "bleak battalions" and "you didn't arrive" are my favorites.

I watched a few videos and liked them, but live YouTube videos of that quality just don't do the songs justice. The vocals especially just aren't that enjoyable. I'll probably just wait for some studio tracks before I do any more listening.

Yeah, the live videos are at their best when you're already familiar with the tracks, otherwise you can't really hear what's going on so well and get a bit lost.

Hello,
Yes, we've just finished tracking four new full band studio recordings. Will and I will be mixing them over the coming weekend, and they should be released as free downloads onto last.fm, as well as featured on the standard internet outlets (myspace, facebook, youtube). We'll also set about getting them on Amazon, iTunes & Spotify if possible. Hope you enjoy them!
Ben
P.S. Deleted the last post because of bad link. Here is our official last.fm page:

Evening all,
Our first single, 'What Else Are We To Do?' with the B-side 'Bleak Battalions' will be released online tonight. Keep a vigilant look out! We've spent many weeks playing and perfecting/recording/mixing these tracks, so hopefully you'll enjoy them. Have a good evening.

Where can I get a hold of Doyle and the Fourfathers music, outside of streaming tracks on MySpace? Having some songs to listen to on my iPod would probably help me get into them. (Besides, "D" is higher in the alphabet than "W," so I wouldn't forget about it all the time like I do Born in the USB, lol.)

it's possible when the band has an actual release planned. they're pursuing labels hard this year (specifically rough trade records) so a professional release seems likely.

UPDATE:
the band's really got the ball rolling now. just after the song was aired on marc riley's show, will was text messaged and asked by marc himself to be the featured band for his radio block on april 20th! this means they'll be not only guests throughout the whole show for intermittent banter and questions, but will also be performing 3 songs (or so) live. this is a huge break as this is broadcast all over Britain and i think at least a couple other countries in Europe as well. if any of you is so much as familiar with me on this site, it'd mean a lot to me personally if you'd tuned in (via online streaming) for at least a portion of the broadcast, as i've been repping will and his music since i joined. he's a very dear friend of mine and can use all the support he can get at this point.

Hey everyone,
Yeah the news about Governor being played on Marc Riley's show (and of course, the session!) is massively exciting, it's come at just the right time - felt like we were really going nowhere for a good few months. I only sent the CD Thursday before last, Marc must have received on Tuesday, so it's really great that he was enthused enough to play it with such haste! So we'll be driving up on Tuesday 20th to hit BBC Manchester.
With regard to songs, we've pretty much finished recording all the songs in our current set now. What Else, Governor, Bleak & Lonely are up on last.fm, and aside from those we've been neglecting the uploads a bit. Anyway, Will's coming over tonight (we're heading to London tomorrow to try and hassle Rough Trade), so we'll get the other new recordings up there (You Didn't Arrive, Every Woman & Saturday Morning). We did YDA & EW at The Ranch studios, which was great, and Saturday Morning back at good old Barton Peveril college with 10 string players from Southampton Youth Orchestra. It was great fun and a great success - even with my dodgy conducting skills.
Really flattered to see that this thread is still going, and we all appreciate your support!
Cheers again,
Ben

guys, seriously, pick it up. this band is easily my favorite up and coming pop-rock band. the lyrics have fantastic insight, the instrumentation is lush, the chords find themselves in oddly comfortable twisting cadences, the melodies are strong and distinctive, some of the tracks exhibit awesome thematics and are dynamically diverse, there's powerful climaxes and addictive hooks all over, and in a nutshell they're pulling off classic-gone-modern in a way that other bands simply aren't doing. for fucking, free, you get 7 finished tracks, 4 demos, pictures, lyrics, and even a template of the album cover on an origami booklet/CD sleeve that you can make yourself, if you want it to feel like more of a physical release than a digital release.

You can download all 7 remastered tracks here - and we've even sorted some artwork for it! Taken at our recent Save BBC 6 Music gig at 229 club, London, the cover immortalizes what is definitely the best gig we've ever done, and probably will for some time.

new song on the upcoming album. i think there's a marked difference between the energy and structure of this song and those previously released, though that's not to say the whole album will be different in the same manner (i doubt many of the songs are this high-energy). nonetheless, i very much enjoy this song (as well as the performance, just look at Will move on that stage!), really catchy, great melodies. this has piqued my interest and added to the anticipation of this 2011 album.

new single, "When Will The Children Learn" -- it has this hilarious low-budget, minimalistic theme video, and it also got them played on Marc Riley's BBC 6 show again and scheduled to be featured guests on the show, again, on february 1st. (excuse my excitement, it's just nice to see a good friend succeed.) it's from the upcoming debut full-length album Man Made, which is going to A) come out feb 28th B) pwn a shit ton of other pop albums this year. i've heard it and it's amazing, i dare say it's definitely the most impressive thing William's been creatively a part of since he made Born In The USB.
