While I'm not Marty's biggest fan, you absolutely cannot beat the source material and I trust in him to do it justice. This is one of my favorite books ever and I think a screen adaptation, if done well, could be absolutely fantastic. Here's hoping he has a close enough attachment to the book to give this the devotion it needs.

Yeah, I couldn't believe it. I hope the cast Melies well.

I wouldn't have picked Scorcese to direct, but I certainly think he's capable. We'll see how he deals with the more "fantastical" aspects of Shutter Island.

He bought the script years ago, I believe (haven't looked at the link you posted yet). Him doing so so quickly after the release of the book hopefully means it resonated with him right away and he's fairly emotionally attached.

Yeah, supposedly Scorsese and Graham King (producer of The Departed) are going to try to produce this independent of a big studio. That's exciting.

As I said, I'm a huge fan of the book and Melies so I jumped all over it. I realize that with Scorsese's lineup of films (Shutter Island, Frank Sinatra biopic, George Harrison biopic and another feature length film about two priests) that this might not see the light of day for a while.

There is never buzz on Scorsese films where I live. I had to drive two hours to Atlanta to see The Departed. Not a lot of people in the south don't really connect with his stories. It's actually understandable but a touch annoying to those of us who enjoy his films.

He does have quite the schedule. However, I've been hearing about the Sinatra thing for awhile and other movies of his have come out since. I'm hoping this one comes out in 2012.

Butterfield, the kid from The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, will be playing Hugo Cabret.

plus more info

Hugo Cabret, Scorsese’s first film which will be shot in 3D, tells the tale of an orphan boy living a secret life in the walls of a Paris train station.
When Hugo encounters a broken machine, an eccentric girl, and the cold, reserved man who runs the toy shop, he is caught up in a magical, mysterious adventure that could put all of his secrets in jeopardy.
Based on Brian Selznick’s captivating and imaginative New York Times bestseller The Invention of Hugo Cabret, the screenplay is by John Logan and the film is produced by Scorsese, Graham King, Tim Headington and Johnny Depp.
Executive producers are Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Charles Newirth and Christi Dembrowski. As usual, Scorsese has the best team around him – Robert Richardson, Thelma Schoonmaker, Dante Ferretti and costume designer Sandy Powell.

Hugo Cabret will be filmed at London’s Shepperton Studios as well as on locations in London and Paris.
It is scheduled for a December 2011 release in North America by Sony Pictures

EDIT: Even more first impressions rolling in. Seems to be made for cinephiles and the first 3D movie to use the third dimension as an essential aspect of the overall narrative. Supposedly best live-action 3D ever (not saying too terribly much).

Best use of 3D in the medium's history. Scorsese wouldn't have used it if he didn't have a reason to.

No doubt, easily the best use of 3D I've ever seen (which I normally hate and avoid at all costs). It actually served a purpose by enhancing the depth of the world it took place in and the cinematography itself. Definitely a must-see in that medium. 3D aside, it was a great film overall as well.

With this and the Muppets, I sure hope Tintin delivers. If so, this will be one of the best holiday seasons for movies in recent memory.

Saw this last night and loved it. The 3D was wonderful too and I never thought they used it to show the feature off if that makes any sense. It was a part of the story rather then used to wow people in certain scenes. Really had a wonderful time with this movie.

I went to a 7:30 show and I was with three people and only four other people were in our theater. Pretty sad.
