Someday Never - The Natural Trend of Breathing
Release Date: July 25, 2006
Record Label: All Records
Rating: [7.0/10]
What would you get if you dropped Punchline in a petrie dish, diluted their hooks, and taught them to shred on their guitars? Well, the resulting spawn would likely sound like Someday Never, a promising young band on All Records. With their newest EP, The Natural Trend of Breathing, the boys offer up a solid suite of cuts that many will be apt to write-off as pop-punk-Xerox fodder, but in truth, these guys exhibit enough capacity to warrant an open-minded examination all their own. Once you get past the anthemic riff but painfully awkward backing vocals of "Note to Self," it is plain to see that Someday Never puts on their best impression of an enhanced Punchline. Tracks like "Pretty Eyes" sound like they would kick off their shoes and get comfortable on 2004's Action, while "Let's Get Lit and Storm the Castle" tips its cap to "Coldest of Calendars" on the intro passage, but quickly surpasses dear-old-dad by underlining it with a glittering guitar solo and slick six-string harmonies later on. Tracks thereafter sound like a much less affecting Name Taken/Punchline lovechild, but without the predecessors’ refined hooks, the end result is more of an empty pastry shell without the sweet stuff inside. When all is said and done, The Natural Trend of Breathing might not necessarily tickle fancies enough to warrant a purchase, but it undoubtedly uncovers a wet-behind-the-ears talent in the oversaturated pop-punk forum.
Punchline, Student Rick, Name Taken, Amber Pacific, Rufio
