After seeing the variety of different answers given in the 80s thread, I thought this would be interesting. Staring with the 60s, who do you think is the best band from each decade?

Uh, there were tons of awesome and influential artists/bands in each of the last five decades. Trying to arbitrarily rank them is odd to me.
60s: Probably Jefferson Airplane.
70s: Without a doubt, Pink Floyd. After that is Led Zep.
80s: Fields of the Nephilim. Probably my favorite band of all time.
90s: Nightwish got their start around this time, so I gotta say them.
00s: Anberlin, Muse, Underoath.

Best? Oh, goodness... There's no way I could decide that. I'm no good at determining what the "best" music is, just the music I like the most. My favorites from each decade would probably be, uh...
60s: The Beatles (Yeah. Typical. Sue me.)
70s: Nick Drake (Not a band, but I don't listen to much 70s music.)
80s: U2
90s: dc Talk
00s: Thrice / The National (I consider Thrice my favorite band for a few reasons, but I love Boxer more than any album they've recorded, so I'll just give them both props.)
Also, I think this topic has been discussed before, but oh well.

Why? Why are these artists "the best" of that decade and what about all the other equally influential luminaries that aren't mentioned? How are the Beatles or the Velvet Underground superior (as in, they're worthy of being the sole holder of the "best" label) to, say Zappa or Coltrane or [name drop]?

Well, that's why I gave the "favorite" disclaimer. (As typical of a choice as The Beatles are, I do like them a lot. I absolutely love the Abbey Road medley.)

Is it "favorite artist" of the decade? Was that the OP's intention? He poses the inquiry: "who's the best artist of each decade" and I'm not sure why anyone would ask that, or how any of these answers are indicative of "the best." What is the criteria for "the best?" We would need an objective and uniformly followed set of standards, and even then, it would still be incredibly limiting.
The avatar is from an upcoming miniseries from Marvel by Mark Millar (Ultimates, the Authority after Warren Ellis, Wanted, Chosen, Old Man Logan, etc.) and Steve McNiven (Civil War, Old Man Logan). The promo art lent itself to a cool meme I created with a few class friends who also chat on a comic message board with me (I'm a nerd) and we thought it was hysterical, so I Obamaized it (novel concept, I know) and made it into my sig.

Right, that's implied in your choosing them, but what about Pet Sounds makes the Beach Boys the band that's the "best" of the decade? Do you see where I'm coming from here?
If they're your favorite, cool, but I don't understand why anyone would claim a singular artist is "the best" of a ten year period. There were so many influential, subversive, or just damn good music being released all over the globe in, say, the '60s.

I'm not sure what the OP's original intent or criteria was for "best," but I thought that discussing one's favorites of each decade could be a fun discussion topic, one that could lead to some nice recommendations, so I just slightly modified the question and answered that. My list ended up containing really typical, boring choices, though (besides dc Talk, and even they're typical in Christian circles), and I suppose most of the lists will end up being bundles of name-drop anyways. Oh well.

Right, but you're asking people to proclaim [x artist] or even [a bunch of artists] as the "best" of their respective decades. What's "the best" mean? What's the criteria for that? Also, given how subjective that criteria is, why does it matter what anyone else throws out there? How can people even make such a definitive statement, given how little of the medium we've traversed and how expansive it is?
Essentially, this is a "what's your favorite band of each decade" thread, right?

About as fun as the inevitable responses where people scour through Pitchfork "Best Albums of [decade]" lists to find the most pseudo-obscure answer for cred, or as much fun as seeing people reduce an entire medium to a name-drop.

Here's my gripe, and hey, I'm not fascist, post what you want, but these threads rarely, if ever, lead to substantial debate, and are normally just post after post of monotonous lists and name-dropping with the occasional "good pick" response or "what the fuck, them, really?!" retort.
The part of this thread that's really perplexing is the idea that we can someone name one (or multiple) artists as "the best" of a decade. That's ridiculous. So, I imagine this is just another "favorite band of the '60s, favorite band of the '90s, etc." thread, and frankly, this board has been littered with those already. But hey, OP can do it up. Whatever.
one that could lead to some nice recommendations, so I just slightly modified the question and answered that. My list ended up containing really typical, boring choices, though (besides dc Talk, and even they're typical in Christian circles), and I suppose most of the lists will end up being bundles of name-drop anyways. Oh well.
I'm not too sure this will be conducive for discovering new artists, especially when it limits the responses to a few choices, and everyone will invariably try to find the most "appropriate" response for each time-period. I could be wrong.
Oh, cool. (Hey, isn't "nerd" the new "cool" these days?) I assume this meme is the Joker smile?
No, it's simply calling this dude "Sugar Lips." It's supposed to be an edgy, transgressive piece of art hearkening back to the "gritty '80s/early '90s" trend in comics, so I tried to render this faux-edginess flaccid by calling him sugar lips. It's kinda esoteric.
I have a friend that was obsessed with The Dark Knight and put the smile and "Why so serious?" on a bunch of random free movie posters in my other friend's apartment, which kind of ruined "Why so serious?" for me.
It's pastiche, certainly. Millar's "high-concepts" are usually pretty thin, but he makes stupid pop-art from them that's enjoyable to read. It's "what if Batman was actually the Joker" and you go from there (with the character architypes obviously, not the actual characters, which are intellectual property of DC Comics/Warner Brothers).

I'm not too sure this will be conducive for discovering new artists, especially when it limits the responses to a few choices, and everyone will invariably try to find the most "appropriate" response for each time-period. I could be wrong.
You're probably right. Your assessment here and elsewhere in this thread are pretty accurate. Maybe I'm just too nice and accepting of these kind of threads? I do occasionally lean too far to the polite end of things and throw threads bones that probably aren't worth throwing bones to. (Ha, is being "too nice" a potential character flaw? If so, I may have it, which is weird, since I can also be a cynical, sarcastic douche to my friends at times.)
Huh. Maybe I'll check it out and see what it's all about. I need to make a list of comics to check out at the next Pittsburgh Comicon, since (as I may have mentioned before) I've been really out of touch for quite a while now and haven't experienced very productive Cons the last couple years.

It seems to me that what has happened here was that a forum was innocently created to provoke discussion or simply interest people as to what others considered to be the best or their favourite 5 bands from the last 5 decades, and then a pretentious attention-seeker has come in demanding with his self-imposed authority that everyone must write critical essays detailing the reasoning behind their choices, and then incessantly moaning about how the initially simple concept is inherently flawed.
Here's the problem:
1.) You didn't read what I wrote
or
2.) You're too stupid/dense to understand why I wrote what I did.
Either way, you're a waste.

It's not just the "best" and "favorite" issue, but the fact that threads like these are incredibly trite at this point, they hardly ever spark discussion, are normally just an excuse to list trend artists and, really, what the hell is the criteria for these artists being your favorite? Why do you only have one favorite? How boring and predictable. Why rank the artists you like in such a random way?
But let's take all that out of the equation - this thread has yet to produce any substantial discussion from the guys who were so pissed I came in and pissed on their parade.
I even tried to get people to explain why they dug the artists they liked to generate discussion and they get indignant like spoiled children. They wanted to namedrop and nothing more. They got it.

Did you read my posts? Seriously, I'm asking if you actually read them or just saw a few/gleamed and jumped to a self-righteous crusade against my affected ass. You do understand that I was asking questions to get a better feel of the actual intentions of the OP and then asked them why they picked what they did, as I (mistakenly) thought I could actually do what they pretended they wanted done in this thread to begin with; create a dialog about these artists.
Not only that, but I asked them what purpose this served, which seems pretty appropriate. Then, they got defensive. I mean, look, I know there are many of you who want to jump on that impulse to demonize that "proposed elitist" dude or whatever (clearly, I'm not. I listen to some awful stuff), but reading comprehension is a fantastic thing that should be utilized. That said, go reread the posts again. Seriously. Reread them.

Regardless, inquiring as to why a thread exists and the nature of said thread is not a board decorum faux-pas. While I'm at it, I can apply the same logic you're using and say (condescendingly, of course) the following:

the discussion from this thread is supposed to stem from people commenting on others picks that they like or disagree with. not why the topic should even be discussed in the first place or the futility of picking a best band/artist of a decade.

Haha yea, he's a funny dude too. And it's pretty great to see him and Paige shredding together. The Edge can't really keep up.
Yea of course singer/songwriters count. But Journey? Why them?
And what, good sir, is wrong with Journey? Other than an excess of awesome.

is this by the chicago underground? what's it like?
It's kinda improvy and free-jazz, but with a bit more structure. If John Zorn were to be a bit more linear, it would sound like this. It's good.

Dude, look at the inherent flaws in a thread like this:
1.) It's been done, multiple times
2.) How can you establish a singular (or even multiple) "best" artists?
3.) Even if you throw out a criteria for doing so, we all have different, subjectively-derived templates for arriving at a best, making discussion difficult.
4.) Considering #'s 2-3, ultimately, this is another "favorite band of [time period here]" of which the board is littered with already.
5.) These threads almost always follow a formulaic patter of posting artists that lend the poster some semblance of credibility, meaning they're jocking the same acts that already have numerous threads in the first place, so operating under the logic that this thread is meant to spawn conversation about the artists mentioned, it won't produce much new debate/dialog/discussion considering the Beach Boys and Radiohead already have a million threads dedicated to them.
6.) I actually tried to earlier posters to mention what it was about their choices that they found enjoyable to spark debate. They didn't want to, and haven't since, which is indicative of the fact that they have nothing to say. They wanted to drop names. Now they have a thread to do this in, even when they had dozens of threads similar to this.
7.) Despite intentions of the OP, a thread should be able to inspire all sorts of related conversation, including its purpose, especially when it's so superfluous and limiting by design.
Before you respond to tell me I'm wrong (and I'm not), reread the thread. Don't just get indignant or make a knee-jerk comeback. Actually reread this post and think about it for a minute.

True dat.

Haha nothing. I've had many a fun nights singing Don't Stop Believing with my friends. But there are so many great bands from the 80s, just curious as to why someone would think they're the best.
Well, I don't know about the best anything, but this video is really rad.

That was awesome. The best part was when JT came in with Dead and Gone.
