I was just pulled over yesterday, because my headlights weren't on. Got an eye test, a Breathalyzer, and passed both well under the limit. The cop still gave me shit. While I was perfectly legal to drive, the cop threatened me with a DUI. He said he knew I was underage, but asked if I wanted to spend a day fighting it in court? These people disgust me. I hope that worthless piece of crap gets shot doing a real job. I'll come to laugh and shit on his corpse. Anyway, today I went to the cities police department today and found out the guy who pulled me over is not one of their officers. Apparently, there is no "officer stewart". He just works for the university. Does that mean he's not even a real cop, like the security guards at the mall? It would also make sense, since he did not show a badge when he pulled me over, or had anything displayed on his uniform. I also found out that he lied, and parked my car in the wrong place when he took it and said I couldn't drive, getting me a nice fine from the university meter maids for a parking violation.

I was extremely polite when I was pulled over, and even during the BS, I still addressed him as sir, shook hands, and so forth. In exchange for my respectfulness, I was threatened with a ticket that the security guard admitted to my face would've been BS, but asked if I still wanted to spend a day fighting it. I was not weaving, my walk test and BAC both showed to be well within the legal limit. They then took my car, and made me walk home. The next day, I find the incompetent school guardsmen had parked my car improperly, and got me a fine. I'm going to be going to the school at least to voice a complaint, and seek whatever legal recourse is possible. If I find out that these flunkies don't even have leo powers, they are going to catch a lot of shit.

If I'd gotten a ticket for not noticing my lights, fine, I take responsibility for my own mistakes, and never asked for anyone's "breaks". But don't threaten me with falsified tickets to waste my time. This kind of shit is why Americans in general don't like cops. They're not viewed in the same light as soldiers, firefighters, because those people actually help us. With cops, most of the time when we have a problem, they get there too late or simply fail to accomplish anything to resolve the issue altogether. When we don't have a problem, we see them abusing and harassing us and our friends. Hypocritically cutting their fellow cops or friends breaks on traffic infringements, while shouting down normal citizens who complain as whiners, and standing behind a false pretense that they're even handed in enforcing the law. Like tax collectors for the city, or self-hating bullies who just like to push people around to feel better about themselves. I'll buy my own arms, get my own CCW, and look out for myself from now on.

You're pretty naive when it comes to cops aren't you? I speak from personal experience, that they know, they can, and they will fuck you if they wanted to. As much as they, the media, and every other government-affiliated organization wants to make you believe that they're not above the law, they fucking are. They can get away with murder if they wanted to. And they especially love taking down smart asses who think they know the law. You think they give a fuck about the law? You think the law applies to them? Don't be so foolish.

I have plenty of experiences of cops fucking me over, all of the times it was because of something I did. If a cop breaks the law they can still get arrested, although they may no how to hide evidence better to get themselves out. But hey you're still an idiot.

Not sure where ParkWay Drive is but you passing the breathalyzer well under the limits does not matter in many states, since you are underage you can get charged with a DUI and have your life completely fucked for blowing a .03 and still sober under zero tolerance laws, it happened to a friend of mine.

As for the cops, big colleges like Umass or i think someone said URI have their own police departments that have the same authority and departments as "real" cops. Most average to small schools are set up differently have certain limitations on their power. I would def check out the school police system and see what the deal is though if anything else but to know more for any future dealings with them.

Possibly. I wouldn't know if it worked or not. I drank maybe once or twice in high school so it's not like I put myself in those situations. Even now, I just try not to put myself in those kind of situations. It's worked so far.

Unfortunately cops are above the law, they find ways to fuck people over. If a cop is being a dick to you right from the start, and showing signs of crookedness, always, ALWAYS submit to a search. If you deny him, he'll beat your ass down so badly you wont be able to talk and search your car anyway. Trust me, I know.

I've innumberable bad experiences with law enforcement but have also experienced far and above generosity and compassion from many, including my good friend from High School who is now a Sheriffs Deputy and SWAT team member who risked his life to pull 2 kids and a woman from a burning overturned car, suffering severe burns himself in the process. You can't paint all police with the same brush and sounds like this campus security guard broke the law himself and you should really see to it he gets pulled up on his bullshit.

well...where are you coming from?

...well...i don't like the way the country's ran, don't you know, and, erm...that's pretty much what i was expressing in my poem. the government...the american government - they're sneaky, they're very deceitful, they're liers, they're cheats, they're rip-offs. i mean, the american government is one systematic government that...that nobody can trust. i don't trust them myself.

and how long have you been writing for?

huh?

how long have you been writing for?

since i was four.

d'you do this sort of thing a lot, like, open-mic kinda questions?

oh i love open-mics, i love coming here to do open-mics, absolutely.

what kind of reactions d'you usually get?

usually, people are...are pretty much in agreement with what i'm saying.

we overheard you before talking about...you went to court today for a speeding ticket...?

that's accurate.

right. d'you wanna tell us that story?

yes, absolutely, i wouldn't mind telling you the story. erm...i went to court today for a speeding ticket, and i told the judge, erm..."let me tell you something, and you listen and you listen good, i'm only gonna say this one time and one time only, i don't repeat myself for nobody," i said. i says..."i'm here to pay a speeding ticket, not to listen to your lectures and hear you run your mouth for an hour." i says "i'm here to pay off my speeding ticket...and i'm here to get my fines out of the way and get the fuck to work." the judge says "you can't talk like that in my courtroom, you're in contempt of court." then i said...i told the judge, "if that's the best you can do, i feel sorry for you." i said "why don't you just shut your fucking mouth for once and listen." i said "i'm not gonna take any shit." i said "i'm gonna pay my speeding ticket like i said." i walked up to the god damn judge and i hand him my 25 dollars and i says "here's my money, now i am leaving."
and i left it at that...
...then, before i left, i turned around and told the judge "i'm here to state who i am and be honest with you." i said "if they thought i was dangerous on the road like you're trying to accuse me of, wouldn't they have taken my license when i first got it? yes they would. and the judge says "yeah, you have a point," he goes "you don't need to get loud," i said "don't get loud?" i says "i've got every right to get loud." i says "you can't do a god damn thing about it, because i'm expressing myself in your court, and there is nothing you can do about it. you think you're god because you have a robe and you can put people up the god damn river for 20 years? well you're not."
and i left it at that...

did you walk away?

yes i did...i don't like the judicial system, i don't like the government system, i don't like the police, i don't like anything to do with this country's government. i just don't like it, because...they're sneaky, like i said - they're deceitful, they're lying, they're cheats, the rip people off. that's the american government for you. america is a third world country, and people don't recognise it...and i think that that's pretty god damn sad, that they don't recognise their own country as a third world, third rate, third class slum.

well...d'you have any weapons?

yes, i do. i own a high-powered assault rifle, i own a 12-gauge double barrel shotgun, i own a regular shotgun, i own a regular hunting rifle, i own a 9 milimetre, a 357, a 45 handgun, a 38 special, and, erm...i own an m-16 fully automatic ground assault rifle...

d'you think things are gonna get better before they get worse?

no way. things are just gonna get worse and keep on getting worse. like i said, america's a third world country as it is and...and we're just basically in a hopeless situation as it stands.

what d'you think this country's gonna look like in the year 2003?

y'know, i'll tell you the truth - nothing against you guys, but i don't wanna answer that question because...i haven't even got a mind that's that...that inhumane.

are you ready for what's coming?

ready as i'll ever be.

most people aren't.

there's a little saying...dates back for generations...

go on...

be prepared for anything at any time from anybody, don't take no shit, always stand your ground. people wanna come up to me and run their mouth - guess what? i'll throw them through the fucking window...i won't think a thing of it.

would you mind reciting your poem for us?

not at all, i don't see why...i don't see why i couldn't.

there's an evil virus that's threatening mankind
it's not state of the art, it's a serious state of the mind
the muggers, the backstabbers, the two faced elite
a menace to society, a social disease
to brainwash the mind is a social disorder
the cynics, the apathy one-upmanship order
watching beginnings of social decay
gloating and sneering at life's disarray
eating away at your own self esteem
pouncing on every word that you might be saying
to attack someones mind is a social disorder
the constitution, the government, martial law order
superficially smiling a shake of the hand
as soon as your back is turned treason is planned
when every good thing's laid to rest
by the governments hate, by the constitution and their lies
and every time you think you're safe
and when you go to turn away
you know they're sharpening all their knives
all in your mind
all in your head
try to relate it
all in your mind
all in your head
try to escape it
without a conscience they destroy
and that's a thing that they enjoy
they're a sickness that's in all of our minds
they want to sink the ship and leave
the way they laugh at you and me
you know it happens all the time
but it only happens in your mind
the rats in the cellar you know who you are...
or do you?
watching beginnings of social decay...

thank you for your time

Or you could just turn your fuckin' headlights on. I've got a good friend of mine who's a cop. He absolutely hates pulling people over, it's something he actually opts not to do and gets shit from his Captain about it, but he still refuses. If he saw you driving without headlights on he'd be pretty pissed because at that point you're doing something quite dangerous and he'd have to pull you over. At this point access the situation, you look like an asshole for driving without lights, you've been drinking underage, you're in college (which is a given you hate him to begin with for "fucking with your friends that one time") etc... you think a handshake and sirs are going to sheild you from a cop who's annoyed with you. Would your dad be cool if he caught you driving without lights, and the rest of that jazz? I doubt it. Why would someone you don't know ,who's supposed to uphold the law, be cool about it, and let it slide without at least a little hardship. Get over it, and keep your headlights on man. Christ.

Police officers protect us? I call bullshit. They come to our home AFTER it has been robbed. They talk to women AFTER they've been raped. They don't protect a god damn thing. Guns, on the other hand, do protect us.

Anyway, I've been pulled over and harassed no less than 4 times the last 4 months. (1 per month average...as far as I see it, its not bad because these guys are pricks and it could be worse.)

What did I get pulled over for? NOTHING. Sure, they gave me a ticket anyway (no front license plate) but that's not what they saw was wrong with my car before pulling me over. The jackass entered the wrong license plate into the computer and told me "Your plates are coming up with a different car." Police make mistakes just like anyone else, right... but they are such assholes about it. They have to somehow look for something to nail you with so they still seem like Billy-Bad-asses.

I felt like telling the last one, "Look at me. Are you a fucking rookie? I'm white. Do you understand this? Look...I have warm food in the car I just got from Taco Bell. Do I look like I'm up to no good? Can't you take this hint as a sign that possibly I am going to EAT and not rob somebody? Go racial profile someone and quit with the bullshit, jackass."

Of course, he'd probably shoot me in the face and take the revolver with the scratched out serial numbers out of his jacket and toss it into the seat next to me. If he wasn't that violent, he would probably resort to the "Look what we found here." pot bag toss into the back seat of the car.

I've called the police recently on a few issues...and always I'm given attitude on the other line. The next time I see someone kneeling in a busy street yelling "I want to die" and cars beeping their horns and hitting their brakes...I'm keeping my mouth shut. A part of me inside wants the fucker to be flattened anyway, but the other "law abiding concerned person" side of me called the police. That side of me does not exist anymore. Fuck the police...when they die in a shootout, I will celebrate from now on. Just another asshole that is dead that would have given me a ticket for having a burned out license plate light in the "good" part of town, while there are blatant drug deals going on elsewhere in town, on the "bad" side.

Fucking police. I don't need their help, and in all my years cannot recall when they actually did help. They can't direct traffic for shit after an accident, they never find the guy who stole your shit, and they harass you for minor vehicle infractions.

Damn, if I get it this bad and I'm WHITE I'd like to see what the blacks & mexicans get. Oh yeah... The "law" doesn't go to their side of town.

If there are any law enforcement people on this site, I hope you aren't one of these typical pricks. Not ALL cops are like this, but definitely way too many. A "real" cop would have pulled me over checked me out, then probably said something to the effect of "Have a nice night, be careful there are a lot of drunks out this time of night." after making sure I wasn't one of them.

Do police get a class in common sense? Probably not. But they take extra classes on how to be a bigger asshole.

On one hand I should cut them some slack because there are too many bullshit laws for them to enforce. But fuck it...if they can't weed out the ones that matter, then they deserve to be laying face down on the side of the road with calls of "officer down" going over the police-band radio.

The picture below I found says it all... A typical cop thinks they are above the law because they enforce the law. They will do 120 MPH to catch you for doing 10 over if they have to. Fucking jerks. (This guy probably thought that a blocked road and warning signs did not apply to him.)

Well, how can you complain when this is all that happened to you when you were caught with alcohol in your system as a 20 year-old behind the wheel of a car. Sounds like your fault to me.

And I'm sorry, but if you have been pulled over 4 times in four months, you're doing something. I've yet to be pulled over, period. So maybe it's not all the cops fault.

I cannot change your opinion on the matter but I'd like to offer a little insight if I may. You are right.... there are a lot of assholes with a badge. I work with some. I work with many more great people who are just out there to do their job and help out where they can. The position of power gets to people. They hear the same bullshit stories about bullshit babymamadrama day in and day out. People get tired of that and automatically go into "don't give me shit" mode sometimes. That is no excuse, I agree. Have I been short with people? Sure, sometimes you need to get a point across and that is the only way they will listen. I, personally, give everyone the benefit of the doubt and offer my offduty personable side until they give me a reason to change tactics; even those that I am arresting (depending on the situation of course). In your case, depending on where you live, .08 doesn't apply to those under the drinking age. In Illinois, if you are under 21, it is zero tolerance. I believe many states follow that rule as well so the officer could have messed you up pretty good if he was just trying to fuck with you. But even then, there is no need for a "billybadass" attitude.

Without going too deep into the other points...
-Depending on the size of the municipality, normally call-takers are not police officer. They are people sitting behind a desk doing nothing but taking calls. You're not actually talking to a police officer unless it is a smaller town.
-I wish I could determine who gets hired and who doesn't. We have too many halfwits but I can't. I don't see how that means I should die.
-You've stated you know you're generalizing so I won't preach. You've had some bad experiences, unfortunately, but there are plenty of good people with a badge out there that truly do want to help.

Can I hear your alternative? It is fear of consequence. Does it "rehabilitate"? That is debatable. But I encounter people daily who gave up a life of burglary, robbery, and violent crime because they don't want to go back. Apparently it is helping to some extent.

It is "timeout" for adults. Maybe spankings would work better....

you mean a prison system that doesn't include systematic physical and sexual abuse? or maybe one that auctually educates and rehabilitates? one that isn't a revolving door for the poor and mentally ill? one that isn't used for massive profit?

for every person who quits crime because of prison i can point to 2 people it's destroyed and doomed to a life of institutionalization.

What would you propose then? Beat someone within an inch of their life and then get sent to "classes"? It is easy to be idealistic but to apply it to the "real" world is much more difficult. The real world is a lot uglier than more people ever realize. I admire your humanitarianism and agree that the system isn't perfect but it would be a difficult endeavor to put into practice that may not yield better results.

This is a completely different topic of debate, however. If you would like to further discuss this, either create a thread and I'll join in or continue through PMs.

harm reduction instead of a war on drugs and more boot camp type institutions for other types of non violent offenders.
requiring every long term inmate gets a g.e.d. and some trade schooling or college education while in and educating inmates on the resources available to them after release.
mental patients in mental institutions.
way more places for homeless people to get a meal and roof for the night so they don't resort to petty crimes to avoid freezing to death.

..........there's tons of reforms that could work that haven't been tried because people think being "tough on crime" is more important then actually reducing it.

i don't know if it's completely different topic because the main reason i'm not a fan of most law enforcement is what they do with the people they arrest.....and if any thread should be jacked it's probably this one.

a more intelligent prisoner classification system and more variation in the types of institutions prisoners are sent to would also help minimize the barbarism.

the system is way to much stick and not enough carrot.

Should there be no law enforcement until new institutions are established? I know that people need to be stopped from robbing, raping, abusing, etc. The rest of the system is far beyond political. My concern is the innocent people being victimized. If we can get a better working prison system that actually rehabilitates, that will make the world a happier place, and my job a lot easier. I am all for that. But until then, I still have to do my job. Someone has to.

there should be reasonable law enforcement....and judging by the amount of people doing time for what are essentially victimless crimes we don't have that.....i mean only a 3rd or so of the people doing time are locked up for violent crime.
prison (and putting people in prison) has become a HUGE for profit business that victimizes millions of poor people now...and the cops (even well intentioned cops) are the biggest enablers of this trend.

I agree. Discussing it, complaining about it, bashing it doesn't change anything. Everything you don't like about it is still happening while you're sitting at your computer typing up complaints and opinions on a forum.
