well they are the clear cut favorite in the NL so getting to the World Series isn't exactly a long shot. That automatically increases their odds.

no, their odds are 5-1 that they'll win the world series. that doesn't make them 5-1 favorites over the field. there's a big difference.

right, what i'm saying is that the mets have higher odds than maybe they should because their chances of winning the world series are dramatically increased by the likelihood they'll get there.
a team's chances of winning the WS increases when the road to it is much easier, obviously.

i'd throw 20 bucks down on both L.A teams, who are at 25-1, for a $500 payout.
Pitching wins WS titles and they both have it. I'm not saying they are my picks, but I love the odds for both.

whammy.....i think the Mets could def beat the Tigers in the WS. That many young guys in the first World Series would be interesting, but who knows....Mets vs. either Sox team (chi/boston) would make an awesome series. Both have solid pitching, big offense, defense

The Cubs and Jays have the same odds to win WS... 12/1. Hahahaha

Show me a healthy Pedro.
I also agree with left. L.A. (Dodgers) has shown good pitcing and it could carry them in the playoffs. Shouldn't of fired Depo.

because the mets are such a grizzled, world series experienced team as well
Outside of pedro and glavine have any of the mets players made the world series?

Cliff Floyd pinch hit three times for the Marlins in '97!
What I don't understand is how Julio Franco has never randomly stumbled upon a WS appearence.

wasn't he with cleveland in 97?

He was released in August so he wasn't with the team for the WS.

a core of youth (wright/reyes) spells trouble in the postseason. if they win, however, there will be an unbreakable confidence about the team. see yankees 1996 (i'm really just talking about jeter).

they won't even make the series. Their pitching will hurt them in the end.

3 of their 5 starting pitchers. Glavine, Pedro, Hernandez. Delgado and Floyd have both been there before.
I think their one pither away. They have all the offense they need, and their D is above average. Healthy Pedro and Glavine would be tough to beat, plus El Duque has pitched well in the postseason, hes a tough guy that has proven he can handle New York World Series pressure. I think if they can get one more starter, preferably an AL guy, they can def win it all

Delgado had 2 at bats in the 93' season. I don't think he was there. He never went with Fl. Cornelius Floyd didn't do much either.
I don't think their pitching can stay healthy enough. Wagner's era in the post season is 9.64 granted that is only in 5 situations.
El Doque is their best postseason pitcher, but you never know when Pedro's injury come back again and again.
also, Glavine's ERA is 4.53 in his last 10 starts. This team will win based on offensive production, not their pitching.

I dont really care about position player experience in the postseason, it doesn't really matter. Look at Beltran's first postseason, the guy was incredible.
Anyway, pitching wins championships, and thats where postseason experience matters. If Perdo is healthy, he will be lights out. Glavine will get more rest in the second half of the season because of their huge lead over Philly (assuming they keep it). Hes not a gas pitcher so he won't be used up come postseason. Wagner is def a question mark, but I think his situation really depends on how Sanchez / Heilman perfrom from here on out. If they cant hold on to leads its gonna be a problem.
Their pitching is good enough to win the NL. But to win the WS, they need to add another starter

yeah because our team with the better pitching, better bullpen, equal if not better defense, and plenty of offense has no shot. okay.
Besides, who is this pitcher that you're talking of? Livan Hernandez? Is he going to put them over the top? Esteban Loaiza? Jeff Weaver? there's no one out there for the Mets to get.

the mets are the sexy pick right now. when they do well, everybody is all over them, but when they slump everybody jumps right off the bandwagon just as quick as they jumped on.
the mets will do just fine, people are too worried about their starters but as long as pedro comes back they will be ok, we still have trachsel who is a good veteran and el duque has pitched better with the mets, his era with the mets is a full two points less than it was on the Dbacks. The thing i would be most worried about is carlos delgado, he has been absent for the past month.

but nice veterans like hernandez and trachsel don't really strike fear into me. outside of pedro and glavine, i'm not sold on their staff being world series caliber.

i know. but he only pitched 8 innings with the white sox last season. so his last significant postseason innings came with the yankees back in 2002.

I'd say quite a few of the AL teams could take them. I'd take the Blue Jays, Yankees, Red Sox, Twins, Tigers and White Sox, and maybe the Mariners or Oakland if Pedro was still out in a series.
Edit: My post below explains my point better. I didn't mean some of those teams were necessarily better, I just don't believe the Mets would beat them in a 7 game series.

no way would i throw the twins or toronto in there ahead of the mets. at all. or even seattle or oakland for that matter.

Let me rephrase that. I'm saying I would take them in a series due to the heightened need for quality starting pitching. I really, really do not like the Mets SP's besides Martinez, and who knows if he's going to be healthy. Are you honestly saying the Twins wouldn't take them with Liriano and Santana going twice in a 7 game series? Or Toronto with Halladay and Burnett (or whoever is taking his start because he is dead)? Even the Mariners or Oakland have the starting pitching to take them, with Meche, Moyer and King Felix (who has been killing the NL) or Zito, Haren and Blanton.
I should not have said "better," I should have said "could beat them in a 7 game series."

Minnesota's a toss up because outside of Morneau/Mauer, their offense isn't too staggering.
Toronto... No. Unless Halladay can go 4 times in a 7 game series as well as relieving in the other 3 games, the Mets would be toronto. The Jays could slug their way, but it wouldn't happen. Their bullpen is atrocious.
Oakland ... who's doing the hitting? Eric Chavez with his two bad elbows?
Seattle ... Relying on "King" Felix Hernandez isn't something you should do as he's a real crap shoot on whether or not he'll be lights out or gone after 4 innings with 355 pitches. Plus, outside of Raul Ibanez, no one really scares me in the lineup. Especially that big two-headed monster of Beltre and Sexson. a whole lot of money for bad, bad years.

Yeah, I'd rather have the mediocre just above .500 Seattle Mariners too.

because the mets are only 12-9 against the NL central and 6-9 in interleague. The only above .500 team in interleague was colorado at 11-4.
The mets hitting has been streaky too.

I totally agree with you, but in their defense..the NL as a whole was fucking gross in interleague.

I mean they are probably the best team in the NL, but I don't think they'll win the pennant.
